Pop and pour. Served a tad cool. Aromas of lead pencil, dried cherry, blackberry, currant and hint of iron. Flavors of blackberry, currant, dried cherry, touch of earth and fruit cake. Ends with a nice finish of 25-30 seconds with blackberry notes. Finish is a bit clipped. Lot of fruit on this still although turning dried.
Update: 30 minutes in and this has really filled in. Finish no longer clipped. Upgrading from borderline 93 to 94

In my cellar since release. This was my second bottle tried after reading a retrospective tasting of 2001 Cali Cabs By Antonio Galloni which was not very complimentary. After 2 bottles of this It seems pretty clear to me that he drank the wine with no decant and/or the bottle was poorly stored. This bottle was decanted about 2 hours before returning to the bottle and bringing to a friend’s house. It still needed aggressive swirling but with air time this was quite nice/ It looked rather young, medium garnet. The nose showed cassis, cherry and graphite. Palate was similar as well as cedar, leather with some licorice on the finish. Nothing tired, tannic or unbalanced about this. While not one of the best Cab’s I ever had, it is a nice bottle with grilled steaks. This bottle maybe slightly better than the last one.

In light of a rather poor review of this wine by Antonio Galloni, I decided to try one of these bottles that I have had since release in my cellar. While I am not a big fan of BV post the sell off the the vineyards that were so key to GdLPR of days gone by to Beckstoffer decades ago, this was a vintage I had kept. In contrast to Galloni, I found this charming if not profound and certainly not in need of quick drinking. I decanted this and tasted it immediately and over several hours. It is a youthful medium dark garnet crimson color. The nose evolved favorably with air, at first being quite reticent but gradually revealing layers of floral, menthol, game meat, boysenberry, and licorice notes. Tannins are mostly integrated with some brightness to the acidity remaining. The palate is softly textured and the fruit while subtle is layered with red and black berries and plum. Finish has licorice and cedar in a moderately long form. Balanced and fairly elegant in nature. This kept evolving over 4-5 hours and seemed best at about 3-4. Will try some that is left tomorrow. Very much more classic in style than ripe and modern. 13.9% ABV.
Next day this was slightly richer and still enjoyable but less complex and winding down.

Served double-blind by my brother. My immediate reaction after the first sniff and taste was Napa with age. It was pretty claret-like at this stage with fairly resolved tannin and aged character. Fruit seemed to be slightly fading and there was not great depth. Seemed high quality but slightly past peak. I was thinking Cabernet or Merlot, but also thought this could be a modern-styled St. Emilion. In the end, I went with Napa Valley Merlot, 2006 vintage as my final guess. My wife went with Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 vintage as her guess. In any case, this bottle was in pretty good shape and was a very nice contribution by my brother. Probably should start drinking these up if you have any - I don't think this is one for the long haul as it doesn't have the vibrant fruit to go much longer (if this was a representative bottle).

This made up for my last bottle being corked. Nothing crazy about this wine, just super solid and in a very good a mellow spot right now. Fair amount of fruit still present, and hasn't quite made the shift into tertiary flavors. Drink up!

Decanted -- Cork was seized, no evidence of leakage. Big dark berries and cherries. Some dark chocolate. Smooth middle and dry velvety tannin on the finish. This was fantastic with a smoked blue cheese. A good, well kept bottle of this wine should be good for another 10-20 years.

At 17+ years old I’m impressed with the mature characteristics and silky tannins this Cab. Possesses. The fruit is subdued but still showing. It was delightful and at it peak.

Blind 2001/2002 Cab Tasting (Chez Hughes): Double blind in an 01/02 Cali Cab flight. Good fruit in the nose with cedar, herb and tobacco leaf ... which are all attractive but also overt oak. Palate starts richly fruited with obvious oak. This does have density and richness to carry the oak, but it's too much for my taste and overshadows the cedar/tobacco/bell pepper cab character.

Just too old, despite being well cellared since I first purchased in 2004. Tested with Coravin and it's gone. Clearly oxidized, no remaining fruit. Sour from tip to finish. Discarded the bottle.

Decanted several hours and drank with roast beef tenderloin. Acidity is still bright. Tannins have softened and black fruit is paired with eucalyptus and herbs. It became more intense over time but it's not rich. Finish is medium. Color has not faded. There is significant sediment.

This one mirrored my last bottle except for only the smallest of "over-oxidized" flavor. It looks like the previous poor storage tested many of my bottles. This one was still shining but only had glints of its past glory.

This bottle was a good bit less than most of the previous bottles. All characteristics of a 92+ wine was there but there was also an old/over-oxidized flavor. It was not bad enough to call it flawed but it was enough to be noted that these bottles had been mistreated in the Liquor store that I bought them from. This bottle was drinkable and enjoyable but definitely negatively impacted by oxidation.

Dark ruby color, dark and ripe berries, black current on palate with medium finish and mellow tannins. KUKEYMON had good points and concur that no secondary flavors developed. This wine was tasted with a total of six people with a 1993 & 1997 vintages of the the BV CS Geroges de Latour. All 6 people rated the 2001 last. The wine was opened for 1 1/2 hours and then decanted for 1 1/2 hours before tasting. Tasted over the next hour from that point.

This is not bad. But given the lack of character and the price range, I am giving it a thumbs down. With 16 years under the belt, sweet lush fruit is still quite spoken with little tannin or acidity. One can imagine when it's young, its profile probably not too different. So there's no secondary flavors developed and probably never will. One can do better by drinking and spending less on regular Napa bottling of Beringer or Mondavi.

Red/black cherries with some earth and tar notes. Very smooth throughout, not rough edges at all, still has a subtle richness to it. Nice long finish, almost no tannins anymore. Probably wouldn't hang onto it much longer but still a great wine right now.

This is our 6th bottle of this. Showed tonight like no other. This was polished, smooth, full bodied, huge flavors of oak, and dark fruits that melted in your mouth. This was so good tonight for a bottle that has disappointed us each time we opened it. Thats why we love drinking wine, cause its like a box chocolates. You never know what your going to get. Wish they were all like this.

Better than the last bottle.Lots of wet wood and oak. Notes of charcoal, burnt embers, and jack daniels throughout. It was amazing how much Jack Daniels notes we got out of this bottle. Disjointed and unbalanced.

Previously had coravinned this bottle. The color is dark garnet with brown edges. The nose of this is very intriguing. Within the nose there is vanilla (probably from the oaking), black cherries, very tight still and for some reason something like brandy. The palate starts off a little sweet and has moderate tannins (6.5/10) with a moderate body. Balanced with a drying moderate finish. Not as dry as a french bordeaux and actually seems to have another varietal in it but it says 100% cab. Was thinking that this may need decanting but the odd brandy nose didn't wear off. Overall I was expecting more for the top BV, I think I might enjoy them younger but who knows.

Popped and poured. Very subtle nose and tight on the palate. Heavy backbone which I thought would have been some cab franc but I believe this is 100% Cabernet.
So a little disappointing as I normally enjoy this but it was average.

Pop and pour. Did not decant. Lighter in color. Huge smokey oak, charcoal, and massive wet cedar flavors dominate upon opening. A little heat, little rough and little tight. Not sure what to make of it. Didn't love it. It was like a wet wood bath that overwhelmed everything.
On day 2 it started again will massive wet cedar & oak notes. Reminded me of Silver oak unfortunately.

At Ritz in Key Biscayne with Sandy K, from the list in the bar area.
Have not had this vintage in several years. Lush purple color. Nose was Bordeaux like - dark fruit, berries, floral, graphite. This was PnP but opened nicely after about 20 minutes. More fruit forward when its first opened, dark berries, oak. As it opens it becomes more nuanced with dusted cherry, chocolate, smoke. Longer finish
Really nice wine in a great spot right now

This is second tasting and the last bottle that I purchased during my winery visit in 2004. The bottle that I opened in October was good and I rated it a 90. I found it to be a fruity unidimensional wine that was quite enjoyable. My second bottle had a stronger impact as I was able to enjoy some complexities. The wine was dark and purple in the glass with fruit driven flavours of plum, cassis with notes of cocoa. Wood is well integrated with tannins which are sweet and perfectly evolved. Time to drink if you enjoy your wine with solid fruit. This wine is very well balanced and tasty!

I purchased this bottle from the winery in 2004 on a special tour with the wine maker that signed three bottles for me. Makes a nice addition to my collection. This bottle was stored in perfect condition (Eurocave) and had not been touched for well over 8 years. The wine was a dark purple on the eye with flavours and aromas of plum, cassis, and sweet fruit. The wine is obviously new world with its fruity flavours but the medium body character with the lower alcohold content was very refreshing and unlike some other over to the top alcoholic cabs from Napa. Unfortunately, I found the character of the wine unidimensional, lacking in complexity. Nevertheless, this is a well done fruit driven cab with softer tannins that have benefited from over 10 years of ageing. Should do very well with Americans looking for something a little more relaxed.

This particular bottle had fallen apart. It was almost undrinkable after a couple hours open with an off cedar-like taste that just stole all the other flavors. Up front it still had a ton of fruit and good balance and I could see its heritage but still would have only rated it an initial 85 but based on several other bottles I have had in the last year or so, I am calling this bottle flawed.

This bottle was not as wonderful as the previous. Deep dark inky purple. Nose is heavy dark berries and dark chocolate. Flavors started out smoky oak and heavy berry then moving to lighter and more refined cherry and light berries. This wine has a great finish on the tongue that shows off nice tannin and a bit of oak. We had this wine with what I would call an eclectic steak dinner with a number of varied tastes that challenged any wine. No doubt the wine showed best and most fully on its own

Big full wine with still lots of time to develop. Color was a deep plum with lots of oak and berries and fruit on the nose. The taste started slow on the first sip and then exploded into layer after layer of flavor; fruit, earth, tobacco, and beautiful medium tannins. I was expecting this particular vintage to be declining but it has MANY more years of life. Drinking this followed a super old Barolo and this wine beat it by a nose with the still-strong intensity

Showing much more mature than Greenblanket expected with evolved black fruit, tobacco, oak spice, and an assortment or forest floor sensations. While this isn't falling apart, Greenblanket would prefer it still had a bit more snap in it's step.

This was not an enjoyable bottle. It was very dark red in color and the smells were muted. The second glass was better than the first but everything about the wine was faded, except the color. My drinking partner detected a tainted taste on the finish and was not happy with this wine either. Would like to try a different vintage.

Deep ruby, great clarity, but no brick red rim I was expecting from a 10 year old. Poured through Vinturi, very concentrated bouquet of classic cab aroma with hint of ripe figs and tobacco. Supple entry, full bodied cassis to mineral with long finish carrying further ripe fruit. Overall very satisfying though confirming my preference for blends over 100% cabernet, as it seemed to be hollow in the mid palate and not as rich as the nose would indicate. The wine looks Ruby colored. The legs are Slow. It smells like Toast, Blackberry, Black currant (cassis), and Fig. The body is Medium/Full. The wine is textured Smooth. The wine finishes Long.

Dark red color. Nose of tobacco, dark cherry, earth and vanilla. Mouth has definite oak, tobacco, earth, smoke and some dark cherry fruit. Much less of the fruit bomb expected and more elegant and complex (probably due to being opened alongside a one dimensional Vice-Versa). Very Good with potential to be more.

Opened 4 hours before dinner barnyard smell blew off quickly. At the table it was a great dinner companion tannins were integrated but there was still enough backbone to lend some complexity. I do not see this getting any better the "Total community holdings: 1,228 bottles" should drink up or you risk wasting a nice bottle. From a Magnum.

Not sure if this is the result of storage, provenance, or what, but we popped this bottle last night and it wasn't even remotely over the hill. "Early drinking window" is more like it. We bought this at the BV winery in 2005 and it's been in climate-controlled storage since, and it shows no evidence whatsoever of approaching its last legs.
Color:clear, inky purple with a clear rim. No hint of bricking. On the first night, the nose was all blueberry pie and not much else. The palate was similarly one-dimensional: a lot of sweet fruit, a smidgen of remaining tannins, but not a lot to create interest or complexity. The wine was a satisfactory accompaniment to pan-grilled filets and baked potatoes, but not memorable. On night two, the wine improved - instead of being one-dimensional, it was two-dimensional: in addition to sweet dark fruits, I picked up a faint bit of mint and cedar. Still, hardly a compelling wine.
Despite what other reviews indicate, I think well-cellared bottles of this wine are in no danger of heading over the hill any time soon. However, with tannins mostly resolved, and no complexity to speak of, I'm not sure this is going to improve with more age.

Had this wine over July 4th with the 2003 Silver Oak Napa Cab; both were decanted for about 1 hour, both disappointed about the same. I’ll start this review in the same way I ended the Silver Oak review… it’s not a bad drink but $100+ is just insane! For those who prize this type of wine (along with the Silver Oak) keep in mind it’s available at Costco and virtually every decent wine shop. My point is why store something that you can get virtually anytime. Now for the juice… On the nose it has dark fruit, leather and maple [edit: I originally said honey but maple is more accurate]. In the mouth the fruit comes through better than I expected, extracted but not jammy leather and earth is also present unfortunately, like the Silver Oak, the integration is not all there. Finishes moderately well but short for what I expect in a $100+ wine.
Just like the Silver Oak, if you’re curious to try this wine wait until someone else pays for it. The juice simply does not support the price.
Remember, you don’t drink the label.

Really showing nicely. Needed time to open, but very complex and suprising delicate for a Cab. Not a typical oaked fruit bomb. Nice, bright plum and strawberry mixed with cola and hints of cedar and tea leaves. Tannins smoothed out, pleasant finish. Was not this good a few years back so time is treating this wine very well

Nose has jammy overtones with maple after two hours of decanting. Surprising actually. Taste is very concentrated in the center of the tongue yet escapes the throat somehow. Smooth and subtle - and certainly disappears from the glass quickly. Red fruit and balanced, medium-length finish. For the price, I expected an orchestra playing in my mouth and that did not happen.

Seems to be in a nice drinking window. The structure and fruit seem well balanced against each other. Refined, elegant and a nice cross between old world and new world. Excellent wine, our first Georges de Latour. Seemed a little thin at first, but seemed to gain strength in the decanter. Unfair pairing, though, as it was tasted beside a 96 Beringer Private Reserve and never really had a chance. Big nose, full of fruit that showed on the first taste, too. Very nice finish. Dark berry color very inviting. Also tasted with an '03 Opus, and this showed better. I might give it a couple more years in the bottle, but it was great now.

Opened at a BYOB French restaurant in town for a family birthday celebration. Let it breathe for about 40 minutes (not decanted). Was very surprised at the complexity based on earlier reviews. Very pleasant, but needs hours of decanting to really open up. For a 2001, this was not a very good representation of this classic wine. Kind of light and elegant. Yet wonderful spice and nut flavors up front. Blackberry, cola, and even a hint of cherry in the mouth, but the finish ended a little quick for me. Thought the 99 was far superior.

Started off with a nice cassis and menthol nose. With air became a dry, typical flavour profile Napa cab. Seems that the fruit is not robust enought to outlast the tannin. Does not live up to the rep. of the GdL's of old.

Served on Thanksgiving after decanting for over an hour. This was definitely better than your average CS, but for the hype this wine generates I was not overly impressed. It is very ready to drink now. Nose was OK, but not too complex and didn't flow into the room as I expected it would. Color was excellent, dark berry cab color. Mouth feel was good, but not as luscious as I would have expected. Tannins were in good balance with wine overall, and there was nice fruit, but again not all that noteworthy. Overall I was a good bit disappointed given my expectations for this wine. Second bottle poured was a 2002 Braut & Sistra cab, also CA, and this showed at least as well as the DLT in the opinion of most at the table.

Still with a dark, slightly porty nose, but somehow less offensive than the last bottle. More classic and tame on the palate. Ripe dark fruits and graphite. Medium-bodied, well structured. Finishes a bit hard, but overall an enjoyable, classically built, Cali cab that should age gracefully.

Opened a couple of bottles for a dinner party 2 hours prior to consuming. The wine was soft, round, and very approachable, but lacked the depth and structure that one would expect of a wine of this calibre. The tannins still have a bit of chalkiness to them. Our guests enjoyed the wine, but if it was served blind to me, I would have never guessed it to be a $60+ cab.

BV Georges de Latour Vertical (Zoe): Not bad, this was surprisingly open and round. It's a wine I would order off a menu, but there is nothing interesting enough here to actually have it in my cellar. Plenty of fruit, oak and cocoa. I don't sense this is going to improve much although it should drink well for a while.

Seems to have really changed. Drank this as part of a 6 bottle vertical, (96-01). BV sold their best cabernet vineyard to Staglin, I think, in 2000. This is the first GDL without grapes from that vineyard. It is muted, weak, and much shorter than its previous vintages. This is not likely to get any better.

A full bodied wine, with prominent jammy, blackberry and plum fruit, buried under some powdery, astringent and chalky tannins. Seems fairly light on acid with an unbalanced fruit/tannin mix, and subtle oak. A mixed bag, yet it may improve with another 2-3 years in the bottle. Hard to believe the chalkiness will subside enough to call this a really good wine. I feel the WS69 was somewhat unfair, but it's definitely not a $60 wine! Drink it with smoky BBQ...

A very poor drinking wine right now. I actually had a bottle of this a couple years ago on release that was quite nice. This is very thin with watered down flavors of black cherry, tobacco, and oak. The finish is drying, astringent, and splinter filled. I still believe that there may be good bottles of this out there, but this one was not good at any price point.

We had a couple of bottles of this along with a couple bottles of the Cab Reserve from Tulip Hill. All decanted for a couple of hours. The BV was not even in the same ballpark. The color was good. Neglible fruit, light body, no tanins. There was almost a hoplike aftertaste. I'm pretty liberal with the scoring and this is not an exception. Both bottles were the same. Glad I'm out of this. If you have this, drink it now because I don't see it getting better with cellaring.

This was panned by WS, but I think they got it wrong. This is a lovely and long wine, with ripe, jammy flavors and soft tannins. It has a lot of age left in it, but is delightful, even now. A bargain at $60.00.

Tasting at winery. Black cherry aromas with new oak spice. Cherry, blackberry with licorice flavors, some background spice. Moderate, simple fruit, slightly short finish.

Grabed a Bottle from a Little wine shop inNYC and had in my room. I think the wine was OK. Not a "Georges De Latour Private Reserve" calibur but not deserving of a score in the 60's from WS. Medium bodied not overly anything. Easy to drink

Thanksgiving gift from my father in law...that we opened and decanted to end the day. This may be infanticide, but as a gift, it is all timing. Dark hued and pleasing color, with a classic cab nose of cassis and dark berries...that was strong, but seemed to be somehow restrained. There is substance here, rich flavor and a medium to strong tannic structure with firm bearing. Enjoyable even now, should obviously get better. I like cabs and this was a great gift.

Opened a couple of bottles for a dinner party 2 hours prior to consuming. The wine was soft, round, and very approachable, but lacked the depth and structure that one would expect of a wine of this calibre. The tannins still have a bit of chalkiness to them.

Neglible fruit, light body, no tanins. There was almost a hoplike aftertaste. I'm pretty liberal with the scoring and this is not an exception. Both bottles were the same. Glad I'm out of this. If you have this, drink it now because I don't see it getting better with cellaring.
