  • From a half bottle, decanted for 3-4h, really needed it. Now, after quite some time, it shows the usual perfumy nose and bright red fruit with cheeky tannins and acidity, otherwise consistent with my previous notes. 91/92

  • A still young wine. It needs more time to evolve, despite it already being wonderful. A typical Barolo. Balanced, dry, aromas of ripe black fruits, leather and chocolate. Well-integrated palate confirming the aromas.

  • Elegant finesse with an exceedingly long finish. Vibrant fruits with hint of cherry and florals, this sweetheart of a value is just entering delightful drinking window. If you find it, buy it without hesitation

  • Strawberries, cherry, sweet red fruit, rose, tar, some candied component to it as well. Very nice wine. Drinking great right now.

  • From 375 ml. Decanted 2-4h, consistent with previous notes. Lots of perfumy violets and vanilla on the nose. The palate shows red fruit, cinnamon, vanilla, tar, chewy tannins, black pepper and acid in the finish. Needs air. 91/92

  • The usual Nebbiolo thing and that was expected. It got 2 hours open ( bottle ) and good to drink now. Still fresh and I prefer it like this. Good producer.

  • Full and rich nose. Spicy. Black fruit, walnuts, asphalt, oak and roses. Very typical, but a bit rustic. Lacks elegance.
Full and rich palate. Gently oaky. Nuts, black cherry, tar and roses. Very typical. But lacks in elegance and the finish and intensity is not as long as the greater Cru's.

  • This particular bottle (375ml) was mature now, giving soft textures and balanced black fruits.

    Very tasty stuff

  • A not so interesting wine on its own but it did alright with lasagne. I don’t know if this will get a lot better but I’m not opening another one for 3-5 years.
I think this wine needs to come out in the next phase of its life…and if this is all there is, I’m disappointed.

  • More oak than Benevelli. Quite standard. Hasn't started develop

  • Inconsistent and unpredictable but can also be surprisingly good; this particular Barolo is best with food. It pairs exceptionally well with anything containing black truffles and zesty cheeses (Basque sheep milk is best) but does wonders with garlic & onion flavors, and with rich desserts containing raisins, dates, orange peel and nuts (such as fruit cake). I've had several bottles which often disappoint with a limited flavor assortment (cherry & pomegranate) and a very short finish. But when you get a good bottle, it's off to the races.

  • love the freshness of this wine. Rose, some cherries, cherry stones and perhaps a slight sweet note (vanilla). Tannins were very fine and nice.
I did not sense a huge change in smell and flavour over the course of 1-2 hours in the bottle.
    would buy again!

  • In the friendly bouquet raspberries and mineral impressions. On the palate red berries, chocolate, a pleasant touch of oak, fresh acidity and tannin. Tasty and mouth filling and a good length. Beautiful wine.

  • Unfortunately opened this. Not in the best phase right now, quite muted compared to a year ago. Wait wait wait...

  • Blind tasted. Coravin’d / PnP. This won out over a Vajra Barolo Albe 2016, Vajra Langhe Rosso 2019 and Ratti Langhe “Ochetti” 2019 in that order.

The color is lightish rust brown red, typical of Nebbiolo.

The nose is quite beautiful: perfume, roses, confectionary sugar / cotton candy / marshmallows, tart cherries but with depth, alcohol/petrol (good).

Palate: mourhfeel is silky smooth and light, wonderful. Taste mainly of tart cherries.

Finish: the astringency only hits on the finish; tart cherries; tannins. Medium finish that might lengthen with age.

93-94 pts. Love this wine. Barolo (Piedmont Nebbiolo in general) is such good value! Yes, this could be confused for a (excellent) Langhe Rosso, and it is modern and drinkable right now. I don’t see that as a bad thing. For $40 I don’t know of too many wines that would beat this. Will get a few to cellar, but it’s also drinking great now.

  • Opened sat for 30 minute then through an aerator. Nose fairly rich , sweet, herbs, leather, dark fruits. First zip amazing red fruits zip, acidic drying tannin, a bit mouth puckering. Let it sit as I cooked ...well thawed some wagyu beef, maybe an hour later....a still warm and sweet nose but drinking it really came around. 2.5 hours later as I’m drinking the last glass (put away half) nose of marzipan, leather, pine, ripe dark fruits, violets, a bit like that glue when you were a kid, sweet oak, like freshly cut oak, drinking way smoother , some heat, getting some violets drinking it, licorice, boysenberries, blackberries, big mid-palate, a bit drying on the tongue, almost too intense on its own, it finishes on a long lingering sweet oak note, with some 70% dark chocolate it’s kind of finding its place. The 70% dark chocolate is actually tasting sweet against this wine. I like this but I think it’s very early in its journey. It demands a big dish to go with and even with that I would decant for a couple of hours if I were to drink the entire bottle. It went well with the wagyu beef and black rice and fennel with browned butter. Glad I have another 10 bottles as I think this will drink well for at least another 10 years.

  • Decanted for 2h, from a half bottle. Huge nose of roses, vanilla and baking spices. On the palate, intense dark fruit, tar, tannins, and a long chewy finish. Just the right amount of acid to balance. This is my first bottle from an auction lot of half bottles, just wanted to try one out while I wait for my 750s to age.

  • PNP
Nose: Roses, cherry with a mentholated top note.
Palate: Deep cherry with a hint of tobacco leaf. Very young and primary with tannins poking out on the finish but not aggressively just enough to remind you she's young. So fresh and delish today...enjoy!

  • So fresh and seductive. The 2016 vintage in Piemonte is shaping up to be an absolute stunner..! Excellent qpr on this one, not a crime to open one now, though the stuffing is there for a long life.

  • From a 375ml bottle. Popped 2 hours prior to pouring; aired in the bottle. Quite closed on the nose, showing subtle tar and red fruit notes. Full bodied, quite robust, acidic and tannic, delivering rather subdued flavors of red fruit, a hint of tar and oak, slightly heat, finishing with a nice dusty bite. Surprisingly drinkable already at this juvenile stage. Lovely firm structure. Solid Barolo.

  • 2016

In the glass: Red and not typicaly nebbiolo trasparant.

on the nose: Cherry bubblegum lollipop, italian herbal bitter, rose, lots of primary notes, with some shoe polish/oaky feels.

On the pallet: Smoth tannins and pleasant acid, wellblalanced i liked it a lot, it had been on my mind eversinds.

  • Tenth Anniversary Magnum Celebration (Dig Wines and Piccino Restaurant, San Francisco): Magnum. Light, woody, and astringent compared to some of the better basic 2016 Barolos.

  • 4 hour decant, typical nebbiolo nose. Tannins present but not harsh or astringent. Usually don't drink my barolo this young but this was surprisingly open and ready for business. Not overly complex or long but nice mouthfeel and good finish. Well liked by everyone in our group. Bottles were bagged but most folks recognized it as a barolo. Solid entry level wine that is a pleasure to drink. Would buy again. Much better than a lot of basic entry level barolo offerings. Would buy again. Particularly nice if you want to offer a nice barolo to a larger group of people, don't want to go too cheap but don't want to be buying half a dozen $50+ barolo.

  • Dark fruit, floral and tar. Racy acid and tout tannins which need time to be resolved. Good qpr at $33.

  • Excellent, 92-93 pts. Will update as I will consume the bottle over several days.
Yes, seems to be modern, but not in a bad way.

Update: Double decanted three days after opening and drank after 10 hours or so. The wine was fine but would have benefited from 2-3 more hours in the bottle.

  • Keeps changing, behaves like a likable Barolo. Modern style but not in a horrible way and accessible already. No hurry

  • From a split, tasted over two days.

Pretty bouquet, quite energetic. Lively attack, and then it all heads down hill from there.

The middle is far too thin for Barolo, and creates a presentation similar to a light Barbera. The back features a biting greenness, typical of heavy (pips and stems) pressing and extraction. Some might confuse this bitterness for tannin, which was even more prominent on the second day, but that is not the case. Greenness of this type does not fade or integrate.

    Underwhelming and poor QPR.

  • Color: translucent ruby. Nose: bright red cherry, raspberry, leather, slight eucalyptus. Palate: leather, red fruit, slight stonefruit, bright acidity, strong tannins with a silty texture.

  • Nebbiolo is one of my favorite grapes so, no surprise, I really like this bottle.

That said, this is not the Barolo of old. This is new, modern, and (almost) ready to drink. They must have made a lot of it because availability is ubiquitous. My local shop had it on offer for about $36, and after three bottles that is exactly what it is worth.

I am more in line with NERAS who liked but thought it lacked something and KMOOSE who did not like.

Personally, I am drinking these while waiting for my 2015 Produttori Barbaresco (same money by the way) to settle down.

A nice and tasty bottle, who can argue with "ready to drink"? But really, everyone else bottling Barolo is holding to a much higher standard (OK, agreed, they are never really ready to drink). This bottle is welcome and delicious but to me does a disservice to Barolo and should have been labeled a bit differently.

Drink up, I am and loving it. But while I think this will maintain or improve for a couple years I do not think it will be great to revisit in ten years like most Barolo.

  • Showing nicely from a half-bottle. The nose is quite generous for a young Barolo with typical roses and tar aromas. The palate is balanced and firm, with tannins still quite gripping but not harsh. This will develop nicely. It will be better in a few years. Could reach a 90-91 point level in a few years.

  • Drank this over two nights. And what Can I say? Not much actually. Ruby, transparent, beautiful. Shy, but delicate nose. Nice taste, but lacking dimension. Lovely balance though, with gentle tannins. Not sure whether this is closed, or just a likeable but neutral wine.

  • Opened and let stand in the bottle for a couple of hours to soften up. The aromas on pouring were intense and wonderful. Cherry is the primary fruit picked up in the aroma. There are also some floral & mineral notes, as well as a touch or orange peel. On the palette the flavors were very nice. Again for me, cherry was dominating things. Tannins are strong, not overpowering though and there is a nice finish that lingers with a little spicy bit there too. A fantastic wine for the price.

  • Enjoyed over two days, consistent with my previous note. Just wanted to make sure my shipment of 6 bottles arrived ok! The rest go into hibernation for a few years in the cellar. 91/92

  • Nice light red Barolo hue.
Beautiful floral and fruity aroma. Spicy and savory notes after a few days - but even with that time, floral dominated.
Fine fruit flavor, starting with fine tannins, quickly progressing to edgy texture and both ripe and unripe red fruits. Great wine, more time would suit well.

  • Not a fan. Didn't have the complexity or finish I expected. Didn't even stand up to a vegetable lasagna.

  • Initial impression: Quite attractive on the nose with hints of strawberry jam, currant leaf, sandy soil, and a lovely, almost soil driven spice tone. Superb balance, this is elegant, transparent and very finely textured. There's a real purity and drive to the fruit on the palate. Classic barolo palate of cherry fruit, spice tones, gentle austerity, with decent length. A very impressive showing though this lacks a bit of brightness. It has everything else it needs to evolve well. Tannins are powerful yet fully ripe.

  • On a Fri after a difficult week, decided to sample six 2016 barolos. Admittedly *extremely* young wines, this tasting is intended to inform which '16s I should lay down for long-term aging. From coravin, poured between glasses for some quick air. Light ruby and garnet in the glass. Vanilla, earth and potting soil, minerals, nice complex nose. On the palate round red fruit, nice acidity, minerals, and yes let us not forget those chewy tannins. Great heft, complexity, and value for the entry level "normale" by this vintner in an exceptional vintage.

Later I opened the bottle and decanted it for 3h. The barolo definitely gained more weight and gravitas with time in the decanter. Still earthy, sandalwood and vanilla on the nose, but the juicy red cherries became juicy black cherries, and the mineral and tar intensified. Tannins and acid everpresent. This is one of the best normale's I've ever tasted, usually to get this complexity you have to plunk down more bucks for a single cru barolo. Outstanding QPR, this barolo is worth stocking up on. Tonight with buttered pasta and shaved black winter truffles from northern Italy, a wonderful pairing for this barolo. 92/93

  • Could be even better later. Mellow tannins, good acidity, fantastic balance and very healthy and good fruit is all hallmark for 2016. This one is especially good in the category mellow fruit, without being to soft or fruit driven. Quite open already. Good to consume while waiting for the bigger one’s emerging and transforming to the sublime.

  • A fantastic representation of the 2016 vintage. The nose was wonderfully floral with cherries, violets ,fresh roses and spice. the palate is surprisingly approachable, smooth and subtle, tannins were rich yet well integrated along with bright acidity. The finish was well defined and rich. A well executed Barolo which can be enjoyed with on the younger side with the potential to age 10+ years

  • Young and tannic. Good match for pasta and red sauce.

  • Soft, round, macerated cherry fruit palate. Some orange peel and something like gun metal. Some floral note that seems like orange blossom. Finish is moderate. Super drinkable stuff and like the Monvigliero, great balance. Finish isn’t as long and the wine is a bit simple by comparison to the other 2016 Scavinos I’ve tried. Very nice for the price. Doesn’t seem like the kind of wine that would shut down. Try again in three or four years.

  • First 2016 Barolo. Nose of cherry cordial and vanilla. Almost like a wheated bourbon in cherry coke. Palate similar, big oak and cherries jubilee. It was at a restaurant so it had maybe a 30 minute decant. This one jumps out of the glass

  • Medium ruby red in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & cranberries with floral overtones of roses & minerals, orange peel, spices, earthy, dried herbs, licorice & a hint of tar. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, strawberries & tart cranberries with dried herbs, earthy, anise, minerals & spices. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & airing but should develop further with additional aging.

  • Wine has a very expressive nose of dried cherry and spice. It's supple and easy going and any tannin are very fine. Cherry and orange peel dominate the early taste and some tar shows up on the finish. It's easy drinking and picked up a bit of weight with air. Finish is a bit short and it's not too serious but a solid entry level Barolo. Drink now and over the next few years. Updated: at it's best with 3 hours air. It has a longer finish and more weight. I would expect some improvement over the next 3-4 years.

  • Lie in Wait

Usually, I’m a pretty patient and laid-back individual. My running joke “if I was any more laid-back you’d have to plant me six feet under.” This is NOT one of those times!

Having been fixated on big Italian wines since my initial serious involvement in wines back around 2000 with the Outstanding 1997 Vintage, I have been known to eagerly await other outstanding vintages with bated breathe. The 2016 Vintage from Piedmont and the arrival of the Barolos have been on my wish list for some time.

Being compared to 2013 and 2010, it has many a reviewer and wine drinker waiting for the nectar that is to come, myself falling into that group.

So far most releases have been a wineries base Barolo, maybe a blend of vineyards or regions with slightly less oak treatment and aging, and in a great vintage these wines can represent some of the best values as well. I found my first just the other day.

This Barolo coming from the best plots of seven cru vineyards located within Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno, and Roddi. Each plot of the crus kept separate and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months and further 12months in large casks with the final blend a selection of the best performing plots. Once blended the wine sees approximately one year of stainless steel and 10 months of bottle aging before release. Hence the long wait for this vintage.

No surprise that decanting such a wine is necessary, although, as I’ve always done, I do taste upon opening just to see how the wine changes over time.

Not unexpectedly, dark cherry tends to lead the way both in aromas and taste perception. While upon cork removal the acid seemed to dominate, over 2 or 3 hours the fruit balanced out and the acidity mellowed. Tannins are in check, a slight earthiness leading to a long finish with subtle spice notes. The wine is big and balanced without being overbearing. Given a recent 95 point review and at $40, the wine falls in that bargain category.

I can’t wait, although I’ll have to, for what’s considered the “single vineyard” wines that should hit the market very soon to compare the differences.

    Cheers

  • Dégusté à la cave. Je n’ai jamais été vraiment impressionné par le Barolo de base de Scavino. Comme d’habitude, le vin est simple et ne procure que peu de plaisir.

Palate: rich, sweet cherry and strawberry flavors with thyme, mint and balsam. Notes of leather and loam. Good acidity. Excellent showing for the entry-level wine.
