13x Pinot Greatness: Tasted double blind. One of the best wines of the tasting if not the best wines. This combines complexity, precision; seductiveness and elegance, airiness and aromatic density. One of the 2005s that sings today.
TN: Expressive nose with dark fruit, dark red fruit, smoke, some bretty notes, some other tertiary notes. On the palate superb red berries, sweet strawberries, ripe but very pure, additional notes of minerality, soil, some vegetal/stemmy aromas. This is round and harmonious, wonderful, airy texture, fine tannins. So sweet and seductive, so elegant and airy. Wow.
Decanting: Not decanted, no extensive decanting needed.

During a Pinot blind tasting dinner. Complex nose of dark fruit, mushroom, earthy elements. Dark and dense on the palate, lots of farmyard and bready elements. One of my top three wines and also the #2 WOTN for the group.

Tasted blind. Wonderful Burgundian nose reminding us of the best wines of Hudelot-Noellat and Leroy. The tell tale mix of sour cherry, cured meat, earthy elements and spices. Excellent palate, elegant with the fruit and the structure of 2005. Good now and with a long road ahead. Later tasted again non blind, with consistent result.

I agree with most notes that this is quite open and very delicious. Deep, gorgeous floral and sappy berry aromas. For me, on the elegant side for Gevrey. My guess is that the TM vines are well-located in this large cru, or perhaps the then-46 yr-old vine material is what gives this such grace. Will be trying the Charmes soon to contrast it.

A beautiful wine. Gorgeous, multi-faceted nose. On the palate, excellent fruit and complexity. Silky. A touch of heat on the finish. This is certainly not a light wine, but it is more about elegance than power. I would say that it is at its peak. Terrific with Thanksgiving dinner.

B30; G5; 4.5+8.5+4*+8.5+8.5+4.5+4.5=93+; 13.5% alc. Needed a little time to warm from cellar temp to room temp before the aromas started to come out. Color is showing only slight aging and maintains good edge to edge medium-red. Some sediment showing, so careful handling recommended including standing upright for a few hours before opening. Aromas of red berry, earth and what I will call burnt cherry (but in a good way! maybe smoky cherry?). Mouthfeel is smooth, but firm with some tartness and acidic edge. Flavors have a deep, rich fruit profile with plenty of structure and balance and the finish is long, reasonably smooth with enough tannin and earthiness to keep it interesting. There is still a lot of fruit on the palate, but the balance is maintained with great overall structure. This is drinking well right now and probably still a year or two from its absolute peak. A nice freshness is still there and that makes it worth drinking right now. Although this is from a great vintage and good producer, it is a "lesser, more affordable" Grand Cru, so I think this 15-year mark is perfect. But it is worth noting that this is definitely a Grand Cru with so much more depth and structure than the lower classifications. Nice to really see the delineation. It helps the cost justification!

Beautiful, smooth on the palate, lasting finish with no after taste. Aromas of light berries and slight oak, flavors of a blueberry/blackberry blend. Good now and good for at least another 2 years

Pop n' pour. Mama mia -- one of the more ready and delicious 2005 Red Burgs that I've tasted recently, let alone a Grand Cru. Gorgeous smoky, earth, animale nose with earthy black cherry in the background. Well balanced and generous on the palate, with tannins full in balance. Really surprising for an '05 Grand Cru, but no reason to hold back if you have multiple bottles.

Lots of funk on the nose but not giving up much on the palate. I think this needs a lot more time, which is something I've seen a lot with the 05 vintage. Should do well in the future.

90-91 pts

Seattle Burgundy Group Tasting #2 -- Chambertin related (Cordon Selections): An absolute jumble of intense fruits (blueberry crisp), secondary notes (I was fooled into thinking this was a 2004 by the Graves-like cedar gamay notes), and stemminess (this was my backup guess as the Esmonin.) Did not quite live up to its Grand Cru status, with a rather dull mid-palate, but has decent structure. Group ranked it third of six.

Very enjoyable. That was my last bottle, but I am saying that there is another year or 2 left in this wine.

La Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Dinner (Salt & Char Restaurant, Saratoga Springs, NY): [Opened at 4pm. Tasted at 6:45.] Wow! A powerhouse of black and red fruits. Quite extracted, rich and jammy. The nose is quite muted at this point. Very young. Even the beef doesn't help. Could be great in another 5 years. Right now, it is almost syrah-like. 93-96 points.
