  • 10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 2: Alcohol 7.0%, 165.0 g/l residual sugar, 10.4 g/l acidity, 3.0 pH
Scharzhofberg is situated in Saar/Mosel. There is no temperature regulating River close by. Therefore we have big temperture changes between day and night. This preserves the acidity in the grapes, which we need for the off dry and sweet style of our wines.
We live and work in and with a microclimate that is characterised by the northwestern location of our area. The southern slopes are still really necessary here for the ripening of the grapes. So we always live and work on the edge of the possible.
But the basis for this “possible” are constant and can also be quickly explained:
Old vines, some of which are still on their original roots and date back to the 19th century.
Low yields, never exceeding 60 hectoliters per hectare, and most of the time even as low as 30 hectoliters per hectare.
Intensive ploughing, up to six times a year, which keeps the soil fresh and aerated.
And a very restrained use of chemicals. No chemical fertilizers, no herbicides, no insecticides and as few fungicides as possible.
    Yield: 5 (15 in total in 2005) hl/ha
    Soil Type weathered devonian slate
    Harvest Notes Ocotber 4th-26th
Vinification: The Bortytis berries that have been sorted out are gently and slowly pressed, resulting in a clear must. Since we only have a small amount of these grapes, small steel tanks are used for fermentation. Fermentation lasts a few months, fermentation is stopped by adding sulfur at the right time.
Maturation: The enormous concentration of botrytis berries, the residual sugar and the concentrated acid allow the wines to mature over decades.
Oak influence: fermented in stainless steel
    Months in bottle: 1

Great golden color with a lot of residues
Full on ripeness on the nose, overripe but jammy, stone fruit, tin peach, tin apricot, pineapple, you got still got the white spice notes of the 2015 Kabinett tasted before plus the rubbery notes.
Palate is again electrifying, high acidity with the residual sugar in a beautiful dance in utter balance, overripe peach and apricot again, pineapple with lime tartness, crunchy texture and immense length. Legendary

  • Best bottle (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Gabriel Standard
Popped and poured. Egon.Müller.Scharzhof.Auslese.great.vintage, do I need to write more? F.ck is that good! Fantastic, youthful and intense nose. I could smell that forever! Exotic fruit, mineral notes, herbs. Deep, complex and youthful.
On the palate already amazing: How can you produce a wine that is on the on hand light as a feather, dancing on your tongue and on the other hand hits you with a velvet hammer?! Enormous tension and concentration without being chubby or broad. Perfect mix of sweetness and acidity. Lots of ripe exotic fruit (passion fruit), wonderful mineral core, beautiful texture and an incredible length. This wine has potential for the next three decades! 96-97++

  • Holy. Fucking. Shit. The nose is like the platonic form of tangerine. It's also spicy, musky, floral - a true panoply of flavors. On the palate this enters thick with more musky melon. The palate enters light and just flies away. Holy shit. The lime takes off like a rocket and builds a crystalline palace. So light yet so flavorful. They should have sent a poet. 19/20.

  • Superlative. Great drive, balance, with deep seam of minerality. Quite concentrated yellow fruit still. It's drinkable now but this will go for decades I think. A much more balanced warmer year than 2007 say when it was a touch too exotic sweet for my palate.

  • Rieslingfeier Grand Tasting (New York City, NY): Intensely sweet, with tons of botrytis. This is exactly what you'd expect from a bottle of Egon Müller Auslese. Powerful and perfume, there is still ample fruit here. Underneath that veneer of sweetness and fruit, there is still an incredible amount of mineral extract. An outstanding wine.

  • Not a Riesling expert. Very fine and elegant. Rich and buttery without being overwhelming. So much energy and density with sweet and ripe nectar. Excellent.

  • Incredible stuff. Sweet, but so balanced, long and complex. Restrained fruit, but so many layers, you could go on for ever. Worth every penny!

  • My 40th birthday (Blairgowrie): It's true that this guys sweets are seriously good. This had the edgy tense type acid profile, a pure craggy slate mineral theme and a really nice sumptuous sweet spot giving texture and richness. I think with more time as amazing as this is I can't help but think it would be legendary as all the components come together a bit more harmoniously than they are now. Its not a criticism as this wine is remarkable there's just so much material competing for your attention its hard to know where to look. In fact I'm finding it hard to describe the contrasts of this wine, austere but powerful, delicate yet savage, challenging yet rewarding. Like a great movie that makes you think about the ending and what transpired in it long after it's finished. This wine made me think longer and harder than any other wine has for a while. Thats got to be a good thing.

  • A Night of Great Burgs (and a Riesling) (Ascott Residences, Raffles Place): Wow, this was amazing. In the midst of a night of incredible Burgundies, it was quite an irony that a Riesling stole in and won my heart. However, it must be said if there was ever a Riesling that deserved to be wine of the night, this would be it. Opened three and a half hours before I tasted it, it still was far too young to fully grasp and appreciate. Even then, it was stunning. The nose was beautiful, but in a subtle rather than showy way, with gentle notes of earth and button mushrooms, a little touch of petroleum, than sweeter scents of peach, fuji apple and pear william. Very classy. As good as that was though, it was the palate that was really special. It was beautiful in a pure, crystalline way that is hard to describe. There was superb delineation and focus of course, and pitch perfect balance, and an almost transparent clarity, yet at the same time, there was a sense of fullness and generosity to its that took it beyond the hard, chiseled rock austerity that sometimes befalls young Muller Spatlesen. Here, there joyfully delicious, lightly honeyed flavours of apricots and white peaches, apples and nectarines ringed with a touch of white flowers and a bit of fizz - a whole panoply of lovely fruit, sweet, yet so wonderfully balanced and harmoniously integrated that each sip seemed just to be one seamless whole of Riesling goodness. The creamily textured finish ended as the attack began, full, generous and in perfect harmony, with a sparkle of acidity, a touch of spice, and deep layers of honey, preserved limes and orange marmalade tailing away in a seemingly endless stream. This was certainly not a reserved wine, but for all its complexity, it was never for a moment showy or even overtly expressive. It just went about its way in a noble, understated manner that simply oozed class. An Ella Fitzgerald of a wine, if you get what I mean. With a price tag beyond the reach of most mere mortals, I am glad I got to have a glass tonight. I can only imagine though how good this will be a decade down the road.

  • 2011 Special Session 2: Alcohol :: 7.5%
From a full bottle. Popped and poured. No surprise that this is still pretty tight, especially on the palate. This has evolved more compared to the previous bottle (from half) which display highly tone of kerosene, but it is soft and elegance with abundant ripe lemon, peaches, mangoes, sea shell, mild herbs that wrapped in a extremely perfume floral cloak. This is yet another great example of power and grace. Astonishing richness, purity and power yet remain light, focus and elegance. This is a wine boosted with finesse and harmony. Silky smooth but the inner core is tightly coiled that you know this need decades to get mature. Layers of sweet ripe yellow fruits, yellow and white floral scents and the soft mineral and mouth watering touch of the acidity formed the softness and zen like harmony to the wine. The detail, clean finished last for a min with touch of saline mineral aftertaste. 95-96+

  • Alcohol 7%
A special wine for the special occasion. Very youthful and primary but this didn't shut down and blossom for the night. Super aromatic floral nose that soar from the glass along with elegant core of ripe fruits with hint of almond nut, wood spice that added more depth and complexity. First sip, a big WOW! Layer and layer of super ripe yellow fruits, perfume floral flavor that completely fill the mouth and all supported firmly the huge round mineral flavor give the sense of elegance to the wine. The mid palate intensity is awesome but remain feather light thanks to the fresh, ripe acidity that provide super focus and precision. Gorgeously texture and the complex, clean finish last over a minute. Buy - YES!

  • Egon Muller Dinner at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Simply amazing. Huge nose of botrytis, with toffee, apricots, almonds. Superb sweetness and screaming acidity. Truly a great wine from a low yield / high acidity vintage.
