  • Jason & Simon's Village Burgundy Tasting Dinner (67 Pall Mall): Something not quite right here - a certain monolithicness to the tannins while the fruit seems to have been cooked away. Again, I was in a minority with my perception on this so perhaps I am an unreliable Volnay taster.

  • Village Burgundy from Good Producers (67 Pall M): More redcurrant fruit on the nose here than the 2009 it's served alongside. With air some chestnut sweetness and a little bresaola. Something odd about this and once again the palate is tight and uncompromising.

  • Jason's Village Burgundies II (67 Pall Mall): Darkish red. Bit of shoe polish on the nose, stern with tannic bite, this is giving up very little at nearly 20 years old. Chewy, meaty, dark fruit spectrum, hard work. It improves after an hour or so, the nose starts to deliver something a bit sweeter and more approachable, but I just don't think it is ready but I also wonder if it will ever get there before the fruit inevitably fades. Masculine and austere where Volnay should be svelte and feminine, and no joy to be had.

  • Village Burgundy: Ever so slightly cloudy mid garnet. A touch high toned. Some sous bois. The acidity feels a little prominent. Quite floral with time against the farmyardy backdrop. Still a sense of tannin on the finish. Somewhat discombobulated currently. ***

  • This is the best 2005 I have had. All the others have not been ready and concerning about the tannins overpowering the drying fruit. As a village wine it is structured, but has come into balance. More like a Beaune than a Volnay, but that is what mother nature gave us.

  • Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Herbal and green, with moderate palate weight, but quite a bit of astringency and even enough pyrazine that I initially thought that this was a cabernet franc. Somewhat charmless wine with the fruit on vacation, displaying only rustic, backwards tannin. Another disappointing 2005 red Burgundy -- why bother with the vintage when there are so many better options out there?

  • Reticent on the nose: brooding ripe black fruit, stone, menthol, boot polish. With air and time some cherries and raspberries emerge.
On the palate tons of delicious elegant blackberry and cherry fruit wrapped in an austere tannic and acidic frame. But the tannins are very fine and the balance is good.
With more time and air it all comes together on the palate but the fruit recedes. A sure sign that more time is needed.
Really excellent and at the very beginning of its drinking window.

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Served blind in a flight of 3 red burgundies from 2005. Lafarge Volnay Vendage Selectiones, Chevillon NSG Les Saint Georges and Maume Mazis Chambertin. The Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux VV was badly corked.

Least favorite wine, this was muted on the nose, with a bit of spicy cranberry/red fruit. Very clenched and drying palate, linear and not very giving, almost austere without a lot of energy or complexity.

  • There is fruit. There is tannin. But I am not sure the tannins will resolve/soften before the fruit gives up. At present it is a "tough" wine. Future?

  • Lovely though it is showing the vintage and is a bit burly for a Lafarge. Just some hints of secondary notes but still lots of fruit and structure. Probably would ideally have a couple more years of age.

  • I am a big fan of Lafarge but somehow didn't love this wine as much as others. I thought that as it's from 2005 and it's their best selection for the village wine it would be fantastic about now. And it was good, it just seemed a little muddled/disjointed to me in this bottle. The fruit was quite dark and broad, and tannins still very present. Just didn't hvae the lift and elegance I was looking for.

  • Popped and poured. Deep red, no sign of aging yet. Cranberry spice, some earth on the nose. Not very giving. Tight palate, still clenched but starting to soften. Has that electric fruit from 05, and will be a village wine that goes 30 years.

  • Small glass, brief note. An excellent Villages level Volnay, just seemingly emerging from its "2005" shell. Floral start with faint earth hints plus red, black and blue berry throughout. Good weight with sneaky structure and impressive length for its level. Good now through 2030.

  • Kinda earthy on the nose with black raspberry at the end. Medium bodied with soft tannins and forest fruit all through the palate. A nice wine that might become more delicate and nuanced, but I'm thinking it is likely at the best that it is going to show for a village wine. A good value for a top producer though.

  • Brick red in colour. Blueberry on the nose, touch of briar. Fruit still on palate but moving towards "tertiary" stage with savoury tea tones and some oxidative sweetness evident. Good length.

  • Positive colour; floaty bouquet, underscored by a fruity crunch & stalky edge; compact, brusque, stern, yet to fully open but has a good depth of latent fruit. Structured. If this develops properly will become a nifty wine. Leave alone for 5+ years.

  • Dull medium red. Austere, earthy nose. Light to medium weight. Slow unfolding of dark cherry fruit atop a high acid, soil base. Typical highly structured Lafarge, not easy or sweet at all, but not that tannic. A bit of VA that was not troublesome. In the end, with time, very good. No rush to open even this village level wine.

  • Medium ruby. Whoa, this started very slowly with some red fruit on the nose but tight, lean, and very dry in the mouth (think of a young Angerville Taillepieds, for example). Two hours later, it was a completely different wine. Now there were mixed cherry/strawberry aromatics and some rose petal, the feel was much better, and the fruit really blossomed. A bit of green herb thrown in as well. This has very solid acidity, but the tannins are not that grippy or intrusive at this point. In the end, very good village Volnay sorely in need of more time. If I had to do it over again, I would have given it 3 or 4 hours of air before drinking. I am certain that the half bottle that remains will be much better tomorrow. While I haven't tried many 2005's recently, my anecdotal experience suggests that even many village level wines are nowhere near maturity.

Next day, actually more soil and tannin, less fruit but more chocolatey feel. I honestly can't say I have any idea of where this is going.

  • Burgs & Barolos (Bronte): red cherry colour.
not very expressive nose, lacks the volnay florals, or any florals really.
red cherry, plenty of tannin that is slightly firm, reasonably good drinking but lacks personality. 2 bottles tried just in case this was a cork issue, but consistent notes.

  • Not as good as previous bottle. While it had nice balance of fruit and acidity, there was a bitter aftertaste that detracted from the wine's appeal.

  • Not a favorite of mine. Finish is very lean and super dry. Was ok a few minutes to an hour or so out of the bottle. Had a little left the next day and it was totally "gone".

  • Terrific wine, with an exuberant nose of raspberry, earth and grass. Quite substantial and velvety on the palate, with ripe tannins and lots of acidity and fruit. Still quite primary. Village wine at 1er cru level. Excellent now and will easily keep and evolve another 3-4 years.

  • Well there goes my theory that almost no 2005 is ready to drink. This was an absolute beauty and with a few minutes of air was rip roaring ready to go. This feminine Volnay had a pretty nose with light and pleasant cheery cherry fruit, with some more pleasant soil and mineral tones, and more red fruit perceptions. In the mouth the wine was even better. There was a perception of sour ripe red cherry and other red fruits. The perception was like cream cheese or creme fraiche. Not in the cheesy or dairy sense, but in that tart, textural, mouth pleasing sense. I just want to reiterate the mouth pleasing, textural sour, ripe cherry/red fruit on the delicious swallow. I can't imagine how good some of the big boys from this stable are-or will be!

  • Prunes?; Nice structure; Strawberry licorice; Bold; Purple flavors

  • Equal blue and brown reflections. Nebbiolo-like nose - Alto Piemonte that is, like an old-school Boca. Palatewise quite austere and tannic, tightly wound without much lushness or silkiness. You gotta respect the non-compromise slow-maturing style of this domaine, but this '05 seems to be in a slightly awkward inbetween phase. If you have these bottles, hold for five to ten years and pray for the best.

  • This wine is still a clear ruby red, with a modest nose of herbs and a hint of classic burgundy. Not sure where this one is going. At the moment it is fairly pleasant, with notes of cherry and a bit of an herbal flavour reflecting the nose, but the tannins are still evident and the overall impression is slightly astringent. The wine is somewhat one dimensional at this point. It's hard to know if more time will improve this, but certainly holding off another year won't hurt it - it's not fading at all.

  • Turning brick red. Sweet fruit on palate. High acidity, fine but quite plentiful tannins. Lovely sweet finish; very long. Leave until 2014 before trying again.

  • Finally opening up just a little bit. Still needs time, but starts giving pleasure. Not typical Volnay, relatively harsh.

  • Cherry red. No sign of ageing. Some fruit aromas but beginning to turn to the tertiary forest floor style.
There is good fruit here but it is rather hidden at the moment. Light tannins. Good length on the finish. Try again in 2013.

  • Popped and poured. Thin, acidy, dirty dishwater-like experience right out of the bottle. Really unpleasant. But a couple of hours of air opened it up, and while it never really developed any depth, it did get more enjoyable, with aromas of herbs and anise, and a through-line of minerality. I'm hoping the other recent notes are right and this just needs time in the bottle, but I'm increasingly worried it won't resolve.

  • Great potential. Not enjoyable now. Very tight and powerful. You understand the strength pf '05 by drinking this wine. Basically does not reflect Lafarge or Volnay at this point. Don't open this sooner than 2016 I'd say, at least.

  • Quick note. Popped and poured, seemed a little hard so decanted about 1 hr. Color ruby garnet. Nose was actually very giving with rich mostly primary aromas. On palate this was hard despite decanting, mainly from tannin. The acid seems right, and the fruit is lurking beneath. Finish medium length. If I had more would hold for at least 3-5 years before drinking again. I think that this could become a real beauty.

  • I may have tried this too early in its life. At present it lacks fruit but has not evolved its tertiary characters. Has enough stuffing to age. Try again in 6 months.

  • Dark ruby color. Current and cassis turn into cranberry and cherry as the nose develops. Slight aroma of peppery salomi. Interesting baseline eraser smell. Like the big rubber erasers you had in grade school. Big wine for a Volnay. Nice structure with just the right acidity to balance out the fruit. Great right after opening the bottle. The next day the flavors has mellowed out a bit.

  • Very concentrated and powerful for a village Volnay, even one from a great producer like Lafarge. Really demonstrates the need to age these 05s, even at the village level. Dense dark-berry fruit and chewy tannins will resolve into something killler, but may take years.

  • Consumed over two nights.

Crystal clear ruby color. Delicate strawberry nose with a touch of loam. Medium bodied with good acidity. Chewy (is that what sappiness means?), minerally, still quite tannic, but approachable. Medium finish.

Very clean, very good. Much more enjoyable than most village wines I've had. I think it will be better in 2-5 years, but I doubt I'll be able to keep my hands off the rest.

  • A little closed somewhat muted nose which didn't really develop into much as we progressed through the bottle over lunch. Palate is tight and lean with the trademark Lafarge grip. The grip would be fine if there was something more generous to counteract it. I felt like there wasn't much to this except tannin and acid leaving an almost bitter aftertaste. Certainly needs to be drunk with food and a rustic dish at that. This wine was just okay and certainly not as good as I expected it to be given the vintage.

  • Burgundy Finale (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Dark red core in the glass with an expansive brooding nose offering black cherry, boysenberry, and slate. The menacing tone carries over to the palate which shows dark fruit and ample concentration. I think the old vines really show in this wine as the fruit material is quite apparent in the structure and persistence. Quite massive and dark compared to some of the wines but extremely promising. 93+
