2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (98) Avg Score: 92.3 points

  • Drank over two days.

Bright, lively, and wondrously edgy...all of which indicate a long maturation curve, no less than fifteen years, likely twenty. I have tasted this alongside the same vintage PdB Normale, which delivers high QPR and boasts similar professional wine marketer scores, but cannot match it, in any measurable category. In this context, that wine's current 91.8 CT score, compared to the present wine's 92.2 CT score, does not reflect the significant quality difference between the two.

Right now, and for the next several years, opening bottles roughly equates to waste, for all but the most intrepid, non-tanninphobes. Ridiculous QPR!

  • This was a fun wine. Very good, red fruited and so easy to drink after a 2 hr slow ox. Fine tannins and not a brute (like how young Nebb can be)

  • 3 hr decant - then got darker and fuller in the glass by hr 5. Cork perfect - zero sediment. Very nice with pre-Thanksgiving dinner - turkey and mushroom gravy - 92+

  • Quite light and thin. Floral nose, red cherry, herbs.

In my opinion this is not ready at all or a disappointment.

    Drank over 2 days
Day 1: coravin 1 glass and I did let it sit for 2 hours
Day 2: open the bottle for 4 hours, still pretty closed and decanted for another 3 with some periodic tasting.

  • Light red, burg color but nose v Piedmont, served blind, lovely perfumed nose of cherries, roses, decanted 2 hours, still tannic, enjoyable, will get better with age

  • This was really fun and enjoyable right from the beginning.
Profit from air with thyme and cherry, delightful, not overextracted, perfect balance. Really love that Barolo style, will go up the next years but already really accessible.

  • Needs air to open up but solid stuffing, with powdery tannins, floral nose of violets and rose petals, long finish.

  • certainly young, but it's certainly come a long way. It's worth the wait. Wait at least 5 years.

  • I got excited when I saw two other recent notes on this one, so I opened the bottle and poured around 200ml into an Erlenmeyer flask at ~4pm.

Finally tasted it at 830p after the gym. medium intensity of aroma with plenty of perfumed rose notes, deep red berries, and a hint of vanilla all blending wonderfully. flavors mirrored that plus medium+ acid, tannin and body, long finish, really well balanced.

Second night I poured straight from the bottle and it's very tight

This is a very good wine, largely absent any developing notes yet so there is plenty of life left. HOLD

  • Drank over an afternoon and evening. Light bricking.

Did not give this the respect it deserves...and still...it over delivered! Bright red fruits and berries, rose hips, and herbs, backed by striking earth and mineral depth.

The wine tastes like it smells. Juicy and rustic at all phases. Acid, medium plus. Tannin, medium plus. The wine strengthens from front to back and culminates in a highly satisfying, tangy and gripping finish.

The tannin averse will likely want to steer clear of this for at least a decade. Likely to enter its optimal drinking window between 2038-2040...and there will be no hurry for several years thereafter. Outstanding QPR! 96-96...97?

  • Excellent. Jerry was correct. This vintage is approachable early. Classic Vietti casteglione. All the elements are there. Still a little tannic but open. Better than the 13 or the 15 at this stage. May well improve a couple more points. Wish I had bought 2 cases. 93+

  • Drank solo during ACL recovery. Needs about an hour decanting. Then luxurious for an entry Barolo. first hour had light body with a cherry finish. Over time and next day it seemed to expand in depth and body felt more medium weight. One of the best entry barolos I recall trying.

  • Color: Garnet

Nose: Ripe plum, licorice, red fruit.

Palate: Very acidic to start. Needs time to decant. Bright and fresh with bright red fruit. Mild woodiness. Softer notes of raspberry and thyme come through after it's been opened forna while.

    Body: Surprisingly medium bodied.

Finish: Dry but long. Big tannin structure that lingers.

Nice wine all in all. Needs 2 hours to decant to take the edges off.

  • James's early look at 2016 Bar/Bar (Terra Rossa): Deep and restrained on the nose, with some menthol. Quite a bit of sandy tannin, which felt well-handled and liable to develop into something nice with time. Despite that, I didn't really care for the wine, which felt almost too clean and sterile, and at a disjointed moment of its development. Will wait at least two years for the next bottle.

  • James' mid-tier 2016 Piedmonts (Terra Rossa, London N1): A little muted on the nose. Four square with good concentration and Vietti shaped tannins (no chalk) with a little wood and crunchy delicious red fruit. Well made.

  • 2016 Piedmont at Terra Rossa; 12/12/2022-12/13/2022 (Terra Rossa N1): Was keen to try this as have 6 in bond.
A little shy on the nose but some cherry pipe tobacco emerges.
On the palate - this was the first of the evening with teeth coating tannins and is both more what I expected from 2016's at this stage but also speaking to some oak treatment here. Good intensity but feels a little unbalanced at the moment. Needs a lot more time.

  • Decant 5 hrs - zero sediment - zero cork seepage. Though approachable (and enjoyable) after 1 hr there is notable improvement into 7th hour. Dramatic change in color to deeper garnet, beautiful clarity. Rose on nose strawberry on palate. Opened alongside a 2016 Renato Ratti Marcenasco. Both were just fantastic with the Pasta Puttanesca. We felt the Ratti was in better shape for drinking now, but just barely. Vietti had better structure for aging perhaps. Both singing now and will improve over many yrs

  • A lovely if not particularly thrilling textbook Barolo. Probably best after a couple more years.

5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • 100% Nebbiolo made with fruit sourced from all the Barolo Crus in which Vietti has holdings, vineyard ages ranging from 9 to 42 years. All the Crus are vinified separately. Aged for approximately 30 months in a combination of barriques and botti casks. 14,5% alcohol.

Deep, translucent cherry-red color with a faint rusty hue. The nose feels fragrant with seductive red-toned aromas of cherries and wild strawberries, some ripe red currant tones, a little bit of licorice, light tobacco notes, a brooding hint of dark-toned oak spice, a touch of asphalt and a whiff of pine tar. The wine is dry, firm and crunchy on the palate with a medium body and intense flavors of cranberries and sour cherries, some rough gravelly tones, a little bit of tobacco, light notes of asphalt, a ferrous hint of blood and a touch of wild strawberry. Although the tannins feel quite ample, the structure relies more on the high acidity - the tannins seem quite ripe and relatively gentle, contributing more to the texture and lending a slightly bitter edge to the taste rather than making the wine feel particularly tough and grippy. The finish is dry, firm and gets rather grippy as the tannins coat and dry the gums. The aftertaste feels dry and long with flavors of sour cherries, some gravelly mineral tones, a little bit of tobacco, light cranberry nuances, a hint of earth and a sanguine touch of iron.

Although the wine isn't forbidding and austere, the overall feel is still quite tough and tightly-knit, offering more aging potential than immediate enjoyment. Despite the faint woody undertones, the overall feel is still wonderfully traditional here - the wine is unapologetically dry and structure-driven with great emphasis on classic Nebbiolo aromatics and savory non-fruit flavors. The wine might be wonderfully perfumed right now, but otherwise I really don't feel the wine is going to offer its best anytime soon. My score might be on the conservative side for the moment, but I have no doubts this excellent vintage will improve greatly as the wine ages. For those who think Vietti is on the modern side of things when it comes to Barolo - no need to afraid; this is a stern, classically styled wine that is going to age wonderfully for years, if not decades. Priced according to its quality at 48€.

  • Tastes next to the 2016 Felsina Rancia.

Cherry, rose petals, very slight earthiness. Charming aromas, though not fully expressive.

Medium bodied. Fairly “effortless” and light, though with considerable tannins. More ready than the Felsina, but still needs a few more years.

  • Tasted over two days.

A cut, or three, above in most measurable categories over three 2011 PdB Riserva Barbaresco offerings. The Asili and Montefico might have been marginally prettier. Otherwise and rounded, full, and deftly balanced wine.

Every Barolo should be...and a lot more. Bright red sweet, crunchy, and tangy berries, rose petals, mint, mineral ore dust, and appealing petrol throughout. The wine handles like many houses' flagship 'Cru' offering. Its substance and structure align harmoniously and provide every indication of a long maturation arch.

Irresistible on the second day! Delightful purity and power. It would not hesitate to hold bottles for 15+ years. Likely to peak round or about 2040 and hold for a while thereafter. Crazy QPR! 95-96.

  • Expressive and pronounced notes of cherry, strawberries, light wood shavings, florals. The palate is tight and focused, with a ripe cherries leading directly to a dry finish with notes I couldn’t quite place. I did find the palate to be a touch tight in the mid-palate, seems like there’s more to show — but it’s endlessly drinkable now. It’s extremely elegant now, and the tannins feel very nicely integrated. Excellent wine.

  • Medium garnet. Quite closed at first with some aromas of oak, red fruit (red currants, cherry, strawberries), caramel, and sage. Opened up after decanting for an hour. This wine will benefit from further aging in bottle for 3-5 years.

  • Lacking somewhat in bouquet. Very strawberry heavy. Tannins chewy. Enjoyable, but I'm missing the rose notes I love.

  • My first of seven bottles. No contemporaneous notes. Decanted and consumed over three hours with a dry aged steak dinner. Ruby, nice nose, very tight, but opened up between 2.5 and 3 hours to reveal greater aromatics of bright cherry and a similar palate. If you drink this now, give it that amount of air. I will wait for a number of years on the rest of my bottles. This is clearly an excellent wine and a great value. I expect it will improve. (93-94).

  • This is showing very nicely, and even if 10 years too young you really get a sense of how special this wine will be down the road. Aromas of bright cherry, wild flowers, crushed rose hips, violets, leather, liquorice and unsmoked tobacco. The palate is rich and powerful with medium + refined tannins and bright acidity. There is a wonderful bouquet of red and black fruit on the palate, which shows great power, depth and precision. This pairs with florals, crushed stones and fresh herbs. The finish is lingering. This is a powerhouse of a Barolo yet with focus, this is not an untamed Bull. If you hold a few of these bottles crack one open now then don’t touch one for 10 years. One of the best QPR Barolo’s on the market 94-96 potential.

  • Tasted over two days.

Exceptional Barolo! Somewhat tight upon opening...air brings it to life. Classic bouquet of meadow flowers, rose petals, bright and crunchy red berries, acerola, pomegranate, rhubarb, rose hip, raspberry leaf tea, hibiscus essence, and wafting hints of petrol.

For all its appeal, the bouquet takes a back seat to the wine's superior tension, snap, and precision, backed by medium to medium plus tannin. Wow! So juicy, so gripping! The mid palate range bends the mind, transitioning to a black rock (pun intended), black sand back that commands attention. The floral, sweet, tangy, and gritty finish has not quit.

Full improvement on the second day. The whole friggin' package! Tremendous levity and power! Likely to enter a deep slumber over the next few years. Off-the-chain QPR! Run to buy as much of this as can be had!

  • Agree with most others that this is a very good Barolo for the price, drinkable and enjoyable now, with many years to go and improve. My bottle wasn't decanted, so I can't comment on how that improves it today.

  • Compared to an expressive 2015 castiglione at the same stage one year earlier, this is shut, tannic and offering little. That is despite a Short (1-2 hour) decant and food. I can sense the quality but it feels much too early. Hold.

6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Wonderful, lively red cherry and tannins up front that smooth out into a long and well-structured tail. Alcohol is well-integrated. This was very tasty now but definitely felt like it had years to go before full potential. I have ordered several more.

  • 93pts. My bottle, tasted with fscov. Really young, as expected, but I decanted it for 7+ hours, which did help a lot (and I highly recommend if you want to enjoy it now, because it was totally shut for business when I opened it - probably around 90pts at that point). This is probably the best vintage of this Castiglione ever, since Vietti is constantly adding new crus to the mix, and 2016 was a great vintage.

I got typical Barolo notes of white and red flowers on the nose, and cherries and frutti di bosco on the palate, with playfulness and elegance. Medium-bodied, like a good Barolo must be. But it does lack the intensity and energy of Vietti single-vineyard Barolo, and it is not particularly long in the aftertaste. I don't think it will improve much more than this in the future, but at this price point it is definitely worth the tariff.

  • Tasted over two days.

This bottle had gone to sleep and locked down. Wow! Totally reticent compared to the previous two bottles. No amount of air coaxed it from its perturbed stated of having been awoken from deep slumber.

Even though incalcitrant, and massively tannic, the wine showed no edges or harshness, no bite, and perfect balance. Based on this showing, probably best to hold for at least three to five years. This is world class Barolo and it will go the distance. Likely to peak after 2040. Off-the-chain QPR!!! 95-96.

  • Red fruit and leather earthy notes were there, but alas I did not get the boldness and it definitely felt a little soft and the finish was not exactly long as well.

I liked the tannins which may mean that I should have cellared this 2016 for another 2 or 3 years. Lots to learn about delicate Barolos.

  • Next young bottle of this high class producer,
pnp, nose full of delicious fruit, on the palate primary red ruit appearance, good weight while swallowing, elegant flow, lively fresh acid, showing a lot of deepness in the long finish, could be enjoyed with a decent decant, but would recommend to hold this one at least five more years, **(**-?), 92, 93+ to come easily

  • Hmmm. A very clear red on the glass, smooth but lacking punch or depth. Easy to pair with the lasagna luncheon and even bodied. Not a long term cellar contender and a bit tart at the finish.

  • Popped and poured. Still too young but I had to try it. Promising future. Pretty nose with mostly red fruit, raspberry and cranberry. Still very primal, of course. Plenty of grip and although it feels light, there is a good amount of extract. The wine feels like it is from a cool, “traditional”, (if you can still call it that) vintage and provided the structure it should age nicely.
I would lay it down for another 5 to 8 years at least. And drink within 30? If you pop now, I’d suggest to audoze for eight to twelve hours.

  • Wow
    95 potential with age
This was extremely closed off at first and only began opening up after 2.5 hours in the decanter. It became enjoyable at around the 3 hour mark and kept improving
Very high acid, with some (well-integrated) oak notes on the top — both of which suggest this wine has a very long runway
The initial aromas were of dark cherry and menthol. As it opened up, I got horse saddle, orange peel, blueberry, violet, then black tea
Medium-bodied. Although it is intense I wouldn’t describe this wine as dense or powerful. It is lighter than I expect from Barolo - but not in a bad way.
    Outstanding length
There is no shame in opening this wine early, provided you give it the necessary time exposed to oxygen to slowly unfurl its charms
(I’m told much of the fruit is from Ravera, which would explain the slightly lighter style)

  • Brilliant QPR. In a very good place after a 5 hour decant. Hold for 3-5 years minimum for max enjoyment though.

  • Initial impressions: Wood aromas pop on the nose followed by soil, white flowers, candied fruit, balsam, medicinal and creosote aromas. So smooth, and very juicy and bright in the mouth, as serious as the competition though with a different character. One could say this is more Burgundian. With very fine tannins, and a willowy elegance on the palate. Finishing with good length and a bit of pastry fruit on the finale. There’s really a lot of retronasal action going on with this.

  • Decanted and sipped straight off- rose petals, red fruit, alcohol. After 2 hours in decanter nose is more open, more notes of roses and violets with a menthol touch. On the palate- cranberry, pomegranate, tar, gentle touch of oak and lots of youthful not overtly aggressive tannin (for my taste). Can understand why it’s said this will age well as much of the complexity feels tied up together and doesn’t emerge as single notes. Only at 4 hours did a smoothness similar to that of the 1996 Cerretta on Xmas day start to emerge. Root day.
One glass saved for a second day to see if there is additional development
Day 2- fuller. Sticky tar palate (tiny bit of cola- first time I’ve tasted that descriptor specifically in a Langhe red) and a bit more dark spice but not hugely different from day one. Persistent finish is richer and more noticeable.

  • Decanted for 4h, sampled throughout. This is a lovely barolo, especially for the price, tons of violets and potting soil on the nose, hints of vanilla and alcohol too in the closing of the aroma. The palate has more black than red fruit, tar, minerals, tannins, cinnamon. It is all very balanced and medium bodied, considering this wine is in its infancy. Mom enjoyed it with our dinner of spaghetti with pesto sauce and shaved black truffles. 92/93

  • Too young, yes, but had to try one. Needs an hour of air to open up then there are great notes of dark fruits, some saddle leather, minerality and lots of energy on the palate. Still primary with lots of fruit and structure. 92 today with plenty of upside.

  • Decanted. Improved a bit with air over 1 hour. Aromas of roses, red fruits, and leather. Similar flavors. Moderate tannins that will take years to integrate, but not overly rough. Surprisingly, enjoyable now, but best to try again in 2025. Clearly there is upside. 91-93.

  • On first opening, this is remarkably approachable. Mid red, this offers quite vibrant cherry fruit. Maybe some rose/floral notes, maybe a touch of deep varnish, but its overall quite forward and beguiling. On day two and three this fades a little. There is a lot more varnish on the nose, and the bright fruit shuts down somewhat. It’s still appealing but now the grip of the tannins feels a little out of balance. Not quite sure what to make of that, will re-assess when I open my next bottle.

  • Over two days. The same bottle Coravined in June. Alongside the celebrated, same vintage Produttori del Barbaresco.

A treat! Alluring bouquet of muddled thick petal flowers, rose garden, rose hip, hibiscus and raspberry tea, acerola, orange preserves, petrol derivatives, and wafting hints of smokehouse. The longer the wine breathes, the stronger all these elements become. Sensuous attack, showing velour-like textures, generous middle, with good grip, then, particularly after air, a bracing tannin wall...that lends definition to the word bracing...announces its presence with authority and verve. The finish, of course, carries the same tannic substance, enhanced with by the aforementioned, and I might add, seductive flavors.

The wine's overall intensity ramped up on the second, a feat that the PdB could not match. And, overall, this left the excellent PdB in its figurative dusty wake. Indeed, while both wines offer exceptional QPR, this one rates off-the-chain in that category.

In another comparison, the PdB presented a touch of bite (herbaceous bitterness) at the back, seemingly as part of the wine. This wine, while certainly intense, delivers ripe and appealing tannin at the back and finish. Again, be warned: once the tannins come out to play, after about a half hour of air, they reach 'soul-destroying' levels. Thus, tanninphobes should pop-n-pour this and drink it quickly with hearty fare. The tannin tolerant, and tannin enthusiasts, such as myself, should decant this for 10+ hours, and still be prepared for a tannin-whooping, behind the woodshed!!! Otherwise, given that a lock down seems imminent, recommend holding for seven to ten years, probably longer. This drop-dead sexy monster, for lack of any better descriptors, should evolve for no less than two decades from today, perhaps three. Greatness awaits! 96-97.

  • Day 4: The nose was better last night with red and black cherries, tar, spice, earth, leather, black licorice - a little heat. The palate has been opening slowly over the 4 days. Very deep and powerful now - lots going on but also showing some heat. Black cherry, earth, some spice, tar. Gets a little sour and acidic in the midpalate with substantial tannins. Finish is tar and a bit of blackberry and minerals. Solid, but not my favorite flavor profile - and verges on underwhelming but stayss above it. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.

  • The wine is quite modest on the nose, with a bit of cherries, red roses and a hint of menthol. On the palate it is however much more generous, with fresh and bright cherries with nice concentration and depth. A vivid acidity gives the wine a lovely nerve, with hefty but polished tannins tying it all neatly together. The aftertaste is long an juicy. A very well made wine from an outstanding vintage.

  • Barolo 2016 arrivage tasting; 11/6/2020-11/7/2020 (@Home): Glass: Riedel Vinum Burgundy
Drunk from 0,1l bottle that was professionally filled from original 0,75l bottle the day before.
Clear, medium garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense, youthful and ethereal nose with red fruit (a tiny bit artificial), cherry, some spicy and floral notes. Dense and nice.
Bone dry, high acidity, 14,5% abv well integrated. High, gripping tannin. On the palate lots of red and dark fruit, a bit artificial for me. Fine oak, some floral notes, spices. Fruit and acidity is not yet fully balanced, a bit nervous. Silky texture, quite juicy, medium+ finish with some bitterness. Obviously young, but already approachable. Upscale potential. 90-92+

  • Certainly understand the hype, delicious and upfront but with some real back end structure. Becomes even more structured and serious with air. Lovely.

  • Great bottle - first from a case. New to Barolo and some wood here, but beautiful bright fruit and fun counterpoint to a lot of French wine lying around. Looking forward to watching over a few years.

  • This is a really good Nebbiolo that can be drunk now but will definitely improve over the next 10+ years. It shows the excellent lift and energy of the vintage with classic flavors of crisp red fruits, sweet tar and cherry wood. The finish has good tension and perfectly ripe tannins with complex notes of minerals and pine. So well done and if this is any hint, Vietti's Crus are going to be something else in this vintage 92+

  • The 2016 Castiglione is a beautiful wine that I found to be a bit austere today, but has great depth for a base wine and seems set up to age very well. On the nose, I found crisp red fruit, red floral aromas, pepper, and fresh herbs, with the aromatics being very bright and high-toned. On the palate, I found sweet, slightly spicy red and blue toned fruit, pepper, and inner floral tones, but the wine impressed most for its tension and sheer energy. The wine was medium in body and very finessed, with well integrated tannins. The '16 Castiglione was on the more austere side of the '16s I've tasted, but was full of energy and tension, suggesting to me it should age very nicely. It's not a base wine to drink young in my experience, but rather an affordable wine to put in the cellar and age for 10-20 years.

  • Medium plus nose shows floral tones, red fruit, fresh leather. Palate more expressive, layers of dried red fruit, high tannins are actually pretty approachable for it's youth, acidity does well. Pretty spot on for the region. Should be more interesting with age.

  • A little rustic with notes of cherry, lavender, and milk chocolate. Tannic and slightly closed, but there is good complexity and this would appear to have a bright future.

  • Ruby colour. Sensuous nose, with leather, liquorice, and some heat alongside dark crushed plums and dark cherries. Rich and powerful on the palate, with the heat coming through amidst the dark fruit, layered with some granite and menthol. Tannins not as high as expected so might be approachable in the next couple of years.

  • There is a reason this "entry level" wine is killing it in these notes. It's serious and structured and offers the perfect italian experience. It does have the roses and cherry but I found it to be darker and more tannic than one might expect. Medicinal and dark cherry but with the acid and tannins to back it up. Obviously too young but I found it at a local liquor store for $40 so I can revisit. Surprised the tariffs didnt mess this all up. Even better than the 2015 which was also excellent.

  • Dinner from Sappore di Mare. Bricking ruby color. Bouquet is full of leather, dark cherries, menthols, and brown spices. Palate is savory and has good balance between tannins and red fruits. Finishes medium. My go-to entry level Barolo at this point. Lots of typicity yet very affordable and fun to accompany home made pastas and ragus.

  • Translucent red, cherries, pretty, so accessible & elegant, this was very surprising for its readiness but plenty in its tank, delicious, after 3 hours tannic, drank with the 2014 Vajra Barolo Albe which was equally good

  • Garnet color with a brickish tint to it. Nose is a bit quiet. some cherry and a bit of wood/cedar. Little orange peel. Lots of grip and plenty of fruit. Just had the 2005 earlier in the week and I would expect this will similarly reward cellaring. I like the balance of all the components - a good sign. Will revisit in a few years.

  • Good stuff. Soft cherry, rose, licorice, and orange zest with woody, earthy qualities. Palate is also quite nice and fruity, with interesting earth and spice notes. Cherry, anise, rose, and cedar.

  • An inviting nose of cherry, floral spice, cedar and earth. Sinewy structure is draped with fleshy, briary fruits. It has good depth and intensity and really tightens on the back-end. A serious Castiglione that should blossom given cellar time.

  • At the open:
Smells of sweet black and dark red fruit
Tastes of concentrated textured dark cherry & raspberry over a wood forward backbone; astringent
Heavy paint-like grainy tannin on the gums

    Full bodied.

    After 75 Minutes:
Smells of medicinal aromas over red fruit
Tastes of evolving, ever moving cherry fruit and astringent leather.

This needs another 10 years as it is heavily wrapped up, but you can taste the coiled layers of fruit and earth - it will be fun to follow.

  • Had to pop one early to check in on the 16s... The nose is beautiful and quite powerful with flavors red cherries, violets, and blood orange. Medium+ tannins are in balance with the acidity. There’s a lot going on on the nose and the palate, but everything seems to be working together. Very promising! 94+

  • Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2016.
    P’np.
Skal bare noen få snurr til før "wow" følelsen melder seg.
    Fantastisk fruktkvalitet på dette nivået.
    Nydelig parfymert klokkeklar Nebbiolo-frukt.
    Ung, men veldig tilgjengelig.

  • Healthy Coravin pour, tasted over an hour or so, alongside the same vintage Produttori del Barbaresco.

First, a public service message! All who fear soul-destroying tannins should A) pop and pour this and enjoy it with a quick meal, or B) not contemplate opening a bottle for at least 25 years.

This power-bomb over achieves in every measurable category, including price!

It offers an enthralling bouquet and profile of red, purple, and black fruits and berries, in all states of preparedness (fresh, potpourri, candied, etc.), along with blood orange preserves, muddled rose petals, tar, and the ever-lovin' rock and mineral earth! Great day in the...as I write this...afternoon! Wow!

From the wine's first gasp of air, no more than 20 minutes elapsed until massive, crushed rock and metallic ore tannins began swarming in Mongol and Magyar mounted-archer-like battle formations. And yet, the wine tasted so good, and delivered so much range and depth, I could not keep from re-subjecting myself to additional tannin punishment. In this way, the experience put my mind to enjoying Indian fare, which though it can blister the palate, and positively requires sitting on an ice block for a half hour after completing the morning biz...tastes too good to stop eating.

Tannin presence aside, this splendidly balanced wine also sports high acid, which prevents any sensation of heaviness.

Nothing less than a thirty year wine from today...it rocked my world...and will likely rock yours too. Evocative, riveting, delicious!!! 95-96...97?

  • Drank as part of an online tasting with Luca and Elana courtesy of Grapes. 2016 is obviously a year with a lot of press for Barolo. This was almost immediately approachable although we did open and decant. It's more tart red fruits at this stage. Tannin def there and while they may be softer there's a touch of puckering. For my tastes I'd like some more years on it, but lots of the stuffing there to be a really good wine and incredibly for the value.

  • Curious to try a 2016 Barolo, so... Clear light ruby core. Aromas on the tobacco/herb/tar side of Nebbiolo. Light to medium weight, both black and dark red fruit backed by anise. Just a trace of upfront sweetness of fruit quickly closed down by the more savory components. Late powerful acidity and soil, quite tannic finish. This is youthful, classic, and quite penetrating in the mouth. While it is by no means unapproachable, it would be silly to burn through too many bottles before it reaches at least age 10 and has had more of a chance to unfold. Excellent potential.

  • Nose had a mix of red berries and licorice to it. Smooth, integrated tannin structure and actually drinking fairly well right now, but will only get better. Quite a good value in my opinion.

  • Wow, this was just one of the best "normale" Barolos I've had so far. It really flashed me. Wonderful fruit, smooth, great mouthfeel and a nose to die for. Can't wait to taste the crus from 2016!

  • 92+. Great value. This is not a scientific note as we were preoccupied. PNP and really opened up after an hour in the glass. Great cherry juice and cherry pits with medium+ acidity. Medium body. Pure red cherry and very dark red cherry. Some rose petals. Gobs of cherry pits. Fine tannins. Medium to long finish. Juicy acidity. This will be killer juice in 5-10 years when you will have elegant dark red fruit with refreshing acidity. Only detractor is slight alcohol on the finish. 91-92 today. 93 with time. Gonna buy these to cellar over the produttori normale.

16s are gonna be good. A more red berried vintage?

  • Interesting dance with this one over a few days. No decant after opening, and early on I was struck by the wines feminine red fruit that’s more cranberry/strawberry than cherry, more restrained than sweet. There’s elevated acidic freshness throughout, with earth, chalkiness, and white spices. The perception of red fruit was fleeting though, quickly drowned out by its acid/ tannin structure. By the 2nd night it was almost completely shut down, it’s big structure remaining. In finishing this off tonight, it had softened some while bringing out a little more fruit, though nothing very resounding about it.

  • Pure Nebbiolo nose, Rose, light petals, small red fruits. Very elegant in the palate, beautifully ripe tannins on the fresher side. Layers of flavor, great finish

  • The nose on the 2016 Castiglione is stunningly dark and alluring, as it draws me closer to the glass. Here I'm finding notes of crushed strawberry, with wild herbs, orange-spiced tea, smoke, licorice, and hints of white pepper. Its silky textures flood the senses with a mix of ripe red and blue fruits along with sweet herb tones, which are complimented by zesty acids and saturating minerality. Yet through it all, fine tannins slowly mount with each sip, leading to a structured finale, as mineral-infused sweet cherry resonates amidst hints of tobacco and cedary spice.

The 2016 Castiglione is a total rock star, and amazing at this price point.
