Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1): Golden yellow. Pungent and fungal on the nose with whiff of petrol and something metallic. Quite lively on the saline midpalate although seems quite sharp and a little bitter. An idiosyncratic wine to delight the cognoscenti.

2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa): A very flinty nose, that I would have attributed to reduction except that I haven't detected that note when previously trying this wine (March '21 and June '22), so perhaps it's a curious artifact of development in the bottle. The wine also seemed to have put on weight, which is less of a surprise. What hadn't changed, though, is the quality of the fresh, greenish fruit, and the rather salty, salivating finish was a nice development.

Lots of honey and bitter herbs like sage and rosemary. Wet stones, like a mountain stream. Bunt orange peel. Lots of flint/struck match/gunsmoke. Tastes like volcanic, but I know it’s not. Really smoky. Too much flint, to a fault without he other supporting flavors to hold up. Reminds me of Hungarian wines. Ripe peach and orange. It’s good and polished but I’m not in love. Interesting mix of honey and flint. The warmer it gets the more honey. Better on the warmer side of the spectrum.

Italian Tasting Group (Bella Puglia, Five Dock): Served blind. Honey, bees wax, stone fruit, a little citrus, struck match, meaty underpin, floral top notes. Softly juicy, a little soft texture, honey, waxy breadth, honey, alcohol warmth. I guessed 2016 Castelli di Jesi...

Impromtu 2011 Barolos (Terra Rossa, Islington): A slight whiff of reduction immediately after opening, but this soon blew off and left a nice clean white, quite acidly crunchy. As a novice wrt Italian whites, especially from Piedmont, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how classical and serious this felt. I'd happily serve this with or without food.

2011 Barolo* (Terra Rossa): A charming and individual nose - clean, green, aromatic with acetone, and a touch of custard with air. The taste of the wine didn't really live up to its smell, with a disjointed feel and an overly short, crisp finish. That said, with some more warmth and air things seemed to marry together better, and the wine was somewhat richer in feel. Overall, enjoyable but not sure when I'd drink this.

100% Nascetta (autochthonous white grape from Novello, aka “Nas-cetta” and “Anascetta”) from 2 ha at 350 m with limestone, clay and sandy soils and ~15 yr old vines planted 4,000/ha. Vinified and aged 6 months in stainless steel. 30% aged ~3 months in 15 HL Slavonian oak barrels. 13% Abv. ~10,000 bottles Proprietors/Winegrowers: Nadia Cogno, Valter Fissore , (daughter and son-in-law of Elvio Cogno), and their daughter Elena.
A(ccuray)=2: Med straw/yellow. Focused, robust varietal. B(alance)=2: Ripe fruit with adequate acid structure. C(omplexity)=2: Citrus, white fruits, flinty minerality. D(epth)=2: Luscious mouthfeel. Full palate and finish.
Wine Tally Score [2,2,2,2] = 8/10
Purportedly of Mediterranean ancestry, but well suited for creamy Northern Italian cuisine.

My second encounter with Nascetta and what a brilliant wine this is.
Medium straw color. The nose showed layers of ripe citrus fruit, crushed rock, peach, yellow flowers, sage and a touch of unripe exotic fruit.
It boasts a lovely high acidity, medium(-) body and a sleek mouthfeel. Very good intensity to the flavors that mirrors the nose really well. The finish is lingering with sweet lime and a chalk dust sensation.
I have no idea how these wines ages but according to the producer (read Nickas note) they can age with good result but this is gives great pleasure right now.

Elvio Cogno with Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno (Zoom!): Valter likes to open a bottle of this every day - it is quite light and very food-friendly (not really an aperitif). Sometimes it's like an Alsace Riesling, or in warmer vintages maybe it's more like Gruner. He says it doesn't oxidise and ages very well - he recently enjoyed some 2001 and 2003. Don't drink it too early!
Quite bright. Unique nose - vaguely peachy, with sage increasingly prominent, and then honey. Sense of minerality and some sweetness coming through, verging on the exotic (lychee etc). A little unusual but it's growing on me. Like an Italian Pinot Blanc.

Color: light gold Nose: flint and rock. Burnt match. Lemon and green herbs Palate: medium acidity, bitterness detectable, light to medium body. Minerality and some traces of perhaps peanut dominate with some lemon and herbs Finish: medium
Surprisingly interesting for the price point. I would have guessed this does barrel time but i think it's actually only got some really interesting mineral.notes that deceived me. Very nice with raw fish carpaccio

Stony, with a bitter note that reminds me of rind. Clean finish. A nice aperitif but not much complexity or pleasure.

Tad reductive. Lemony/citrusy. Lovely enveloping creaminess. Light and jovial and very approachable. Appreciably saline and austere.
