Remarkable. I expected the worst in this older vintage wine but it showed remarkable freshness still. It was a simple but delicious light rhone with a lovely acid balance, macerated strawberry and a distinct tinge of white pepper.

Scents of smoke, cassis, black currant, some barn aromas and a bit of green banana. A fruitful, light but fit body. Flavours of black currant, tar, a bit unpleasent leather and some chewing gum (cassis). Still a bit hard tannins. I guess in 6 months a bit better. It might have got a certain headace potential. I only had a 0,375. Lucky me. Simple but quite pleasing Farmers Best Blend. The spirit of the contryside and cowshed ;-)

This is a light-ish wine, both in color and taste, but with enough body to stand up to a steak. Not much of a nose. But the taste is good. The wine isn't slacking off. It's up on its feet, trying to do something. This is a good wine.

Warm red fruits on the nose - redcurrants, plums and loganberries - up front, with (pleasingly) some spice and mineral underneath. Fresh and forward without at all being over-ripe. Follows through onto palate, along with a little green stalkyness/under-ripness - in the context a good thing, adding structure and interest, although also a jarring astringency to the acid, which renders it funky rather than fresh. Overall, well judged and fine for an odd glass with food, but the poor quality of the acid on the finish detracts heavily from the whole. I wonder whether it was acidified or natural? 86

This bottle was actually a Ventoux AOC, not a Côtes du Ventoux (there was no Ventoux AOC in CellarTracker). Simple red fruit profile of strawberry, cherry and raspberry. Ripe fruit without much complexity. Almost tastes manufactured (almost), but then it comes across as merely rustic. Easy to drink with food. Easy going "cheap" wine. Got better on day two, with some olive tapenade notes peeking through.

Bouquet was nothing overly impressive, but this was a great Grenache, Carignan, Syrah Blend. For $7.99/bottle (in Colorado) it was pretty damn good cooking wine. Great spicy, full bodied flavor. Tannic backbone is a little weak, but at $8 that's a nit-pick. It still holds up pretty well to a variety of food.

Got this bottle at CostCo for $10 for a magnum (1.5 liters, 2 regular bottles' worth) and drank with Italian deli sandwhiches. Yeah, I know, we drank this bottle REAL young; we probably should have sat on this bottle for a year or so to let it age gracefully. But like it's sister region/wines (Cotes du Rhone), these wines are meant to be consumed young. Knowing that, I still wish that we had let this wine age for a bit to see if it would have aged gracefully. This is an obviously light-bodied red. The flavor profile (the blend consists of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, and 15% Cinsault) is similar to a typical Cotes du Rhone in that the body is quite light, the color and flavor profile is light as well, and the depth and complexity doesn't go very deep. Whereas a quality Chateauneuf-du-Pape goes MILES deep (in depth, flavors, and complexity), this Cotes du Ventoux goes a couple of inches deep. The Grenache provides spice (especially white pepper) but the other varietals don't bring much to the party. This is a real simplistic red that would, quite frankly, be best used when cooking. The only real reason I bought this wine at CostCo is that this wine was made by one of the most prestigious wine families in the world: the Perrin family of Chateau du Beaucastel and, more relevant to Californians, distributed by Vineyard Brands, which is associated with Tablas Creek of Paso Robles (a joint venture of the Perrin family and Hass family of Vineyard Brands). I simply picked-up the bottle because I was intrigued by a magnum of a French red blend. When I saw the words "Perrin" and "Vineyard Brands" on the back of the label, my interest went from "that looks interesting" to "holy cow, I gotta try this bottle!!" Unfortunately, if you're looking for a quality Rhone blend that doesn't cost an arm-and-a-leg, you really should look elsewhere (such as Tablas Creek's "Cotes du Rhone"). This wasn't a bad bottle; it had some redeeming qualities (especially the peppery spice from the Grenache). But for about the same price ($5 for a 750ml bottle), you could do better, such as a bottle of Columbia Crest's Vineyard 10 red blend.

Garnet red in color. On the nose I get strawberry and cherry with a hint of earthy leather and some rusty minerality. On the palate I get more of that red fruit with lots of rusty leather and a little heat on the finish. This wine has true flavor above and beyond the fruit. This wine has character. This wine for the price is so much better than I expected. I would love to try other vintages.

This is a great everyday wine. Plump, round and sexy with red fruits in abundance. Soft and supple, it goes down way too easy. Yes it is a bit lightish and lacking in concentration, but how much can you expect at the price point? Unbeatable at the sale price ($6.99). 5-11-14-7: 87/100.

Delightful perfumed and concentrated red fruits. Structured nicely. Concentration and acid suggest this will be a perfectly good bottle of wine in a few years. At the moment it is a bit "dumb" on the pallet. Tannins are velvety and round. After three or four days this really mellowed out into a lovely glass of wine.

From magnum. Almost identical to the '09 La Ferme Julien, also produced by the Perrin Family. My hunch is they're exactly the same wine bottled differently. In fact, a look at both back labels indicates the same grapes in identical proportions -- 50% Grenache/20% Syrah/15% Carignan/15% Cinsault -- one in 750 ml and the other in 1.5L bottles with different names and labels. That said, as with the Julien it's a tasty bottle of wine with a very good QPR. Medium bodied with blackberries and blueberries in the aroma and following through on the palate. Seemed a bit more youthful than the Julien, perhaps because it was packed into a magnum. The larger format also added to the festiveness of the dinner. As with the Julien, my question is: Why can't we find a fun, inexpensive, bistro-styled wine like this from California?

Not nearly as good as the 2007 vintage. Astringency allows some flavours of berries, raspberry jam, and earthy/yeastiness to come through. Tannins might be okay, but lost against astringent/alcohol burn. Okay value and meant as a table wine for pizza nights only.

fresh and bright red fruit on the nose and on the palate, very young and lively, this is like Beaujolais Villages meets Rhone, and from a good year, while fruity, simple and light, this wine appeals with naturalness, softness and drinkability as well as versatility with food, one of the more "real" wines you can find in the market at this price (meaning the juice is less manipulated), drink up and share type

Strikes me as showing a touch more oak than in previous vintages, but this is classic, inexpensive Rhone. Cherries and other red fruits, and a mineral, almost cement-type aroma mixed into the background. A touch more tannic than usual, as well. Drink now-2011. Food pairing: Chicken with red bell peppers.

I must disagree with Viini-Viren; 2009 is a great vintage for this wine, actually rated "better" than 2008. I've had the '08s and '07s; this (2009) surpasses them.

Devastating. While 2008 was one of my favorite cheap wines, this 2009 is awful. Caramel and strange chemical flavors pretty much destroys the wine. It did not get any better with air time. I am afraid this is a lost vintage.

When I saw the words "Perrin" and "Vineyard Brands" on the back of the label, my interest went from "that looks interesting" to "holy cow, I gotta try this bottle!!"
Unfortunately, if you're looking for a quality Rhone blend that doesn't cost an arm-and-a-leg, you really should look elsewhere (such as Tablas Creek's "Cotes du Rhone"). This wasn't a bad bottle; it had some redeeming qualities (especially the peppery spice from the Grenache). But for about the same price ($5 for a 750ml bottle), you could do better, such as a bottle of Columbia Crest's Vineyard 10 red blend.

fresh and bright red fruit on the nose and on the palate, very young and lively, this is like Beaujolais Villages meets Rhone, and from a good year, while fruity, simple and light, this wine appeals with naturalness, softness and drinkability as well as versatility with food, one of the more "real" wines you can find in the market at this price (meaning the juice is less manipulated), drink up and share type

N: fresh fruit, cherry, strawberry, a bit of spice
T: strawberry, red rasberry, dusty, spice, mineral, much more complexity than expected of a TJ $5 wine. a very good light rhone.

Ugh/yuk. Overcropped grenache flavours. Soundly made from crappy fruit and meant for early drinking from a carafe in a cafe not far from Cote du Ventoux, but whose idea was it to export this stuff?

Surprisingly ripe, riper than prior vintages. Medium-bodied and flavorful, with red and blue berry fruit and grippy tannins. Can't beat the value.

Average supermarket quality; red fruits, slightly chemical, rather thin bodied and not showing any complexities. Just drinkable. - 80 points
