  • From 75cl, perfect cork, P+P and decanted straight out of the fridge—a big mistake. First 90 minutes: new oak, old oak and more new oak; closed and squeaky-textured. It finally opened up at near-room temperature, after 2 hours in the carafe. Lemon curd, liquorice, a complex, gently emollient texture, less acidity than expected. Very fine indeed. Needs air and (despite the 12-14C recommendation on the back label) serving at roughly 15-17C. Probably better in 5 years time.

  • In the bouquet some nuts and yellow fruits. On the palate fresh acidity and slightly drying.

  • From 75cl perfect cork, opened but not decanted one hour, served at fridge temperature—a disaster: screaming oak and a crabby, mouth-puckering texture. The remaining two-thirds decanted and allowed to warm up to cool room temperature, by which time there was only a small glass left. Bingo! Supple, creamy texture, the oak recedes, plenty of life left in this 8 year-old. DO NOT SERVE THIS WINE STRAIGHT OUT OF THE FRIDGE. Decanting is a must, as is only the most gentle cooling. NR tonight, but the 91-92P I have previously given seem plausible.

  • This needed some time and temperature. Initially quite oaky, this had yellow fruit, vanilla, wax, medium acidity, feels quite young still. Good wine, but I prefer my classics.

  • Drank at a social event, hence only brief notes. Fortunately, after a shockingly premoxed 2016 bottle a couple of months ago, this was singing. Intense, precise and linear with a plethora of spice and floral notes, mirabelle fruit and a splash of lime. Creamy and at the same time crips palate great tension and acidity. Delicious.

  • Superb winemaking in a wine of graceful complexity & intensity, 100% Viura from decent altitude. Pale golden, shiny in appearance. Popped & poured, the nose reveals a lovely interplay of just-ripe tropical fruit, yellow apples, oak & vanilla, butter & nuts, backbone notes of citrus. Palate, medium+-bodied, offers a ripple of exotic fruits, grapefruit-like citrus, derivering a buttery, juicy, succulent mouthfeel, barrel spice, vanilla & distinctive saltiness running through the mouthwatering finish. Satisfying!

  • 1/6. Taken to Hispania with FC and AW. Quiet ripe nose, some peach, touch of vanilla oak, some florals. Medium bodied, peach, touch of creamy breadth but lovely orangey acidity, more linear than previous vintages I've tried, good length fresh finish. Excellent.

  • Floral overlay, citrus, Mirabelle and fresh apricot fruit. But there is also a spicy kick and smoky layers. Super crisp and fresh palate with and electric and long finish. Once again convincing complexity. Have had this 5 times over the last 3 years and have consistently scored this 93-95. Incredible value.

  • Maybe slightly off from prior bottles. This one needed a little time to open up.....an hour plus.

  • Very nice white Rioja. From old vines, planted in 1945, at 485 meters. 15 months in new French oak. Honeysuckle, yellow apple, papaya, banana, beewax, chamomile, vanilla. High viscosity, medium+ acidity, long finish. This should age nicely for many more years

  • Brian and I liked it. Nose we got orange peel (oil - like from a cocktail), some salinity, minerality, seashells, white flower, coconut, vanila. Laquer. Brian says oak on the nose.

Medium+ body. Complex and layered. Some Malo, oak.

  • From 75cl, perfect cork, opened but not decanted 90 minutes. Superb knife-edge ripe lime fruit, Puligny-like poise and balance, civilised oak and NO MOULDY FUNK, this might just be what hipsters move onto as they trim their beards and realise that Tondonia is too-often astonishingly manky, and (these days) reliably overpriced. Great wine, has profited from the year since my TN of 24.07.2021. 92P

This is my thrid bottle and has progressed beatifully. Ready to drink now.

Boire d'ici 2025. 91+

  • Just like a bottle consumed last August. A very interesting and tasty wine. I should have bought a whole case, rather than just 6 bottles.

  • Mid lemon. Right out of the bottle, the oaky vanilla and coconut are rather overpowering but eventually it mellows out and starts to show some quince, white flowers, lemon. Very good acidity, minerality, and length. Great texture. There is some weight in the mouth but the wine is still very lifted and appetizing. Very recognizably white Rioja. Should continue to develop with some time. Pair with seafood, particularly fleshy white fish like turbot. Excellent.

  • Good with Seafood, complex, not oaky

  • Hosting C+D at home. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla butter toast oak, ripe peach, melons. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of unctous oil, vanilla butter toast oak, ripe peaches, sweet honey melons. Salty long finish.
Good quality. Distinct oaky ripe style. Not my preferred type of white. Maybe needs about 5 years+ to find the balance between integrating oak and avoiding oxidative creep.

  • Pale yellow. Aromas of mango, citrus, quince, honey, vanilla, tobacco. Bone dry, refreshing acidity, full bodied, creamy. Will age at least 5-8 years. Elegant wine with long finish.

  • My first experience with the Viura (100%) grape from Rioja. What a treat! Elegant tropical fruits with perfect balanced acid to enjoy w/wo food. Mostly dry with a bare hint of sweetness. Medium body, great finish. More complex structure than most whites. Multi layered flavors swirl across the palate, lingering after the finish wanting more.

  • Brief notes from memory a couple of weeks after tasting Once again spectacular performance with my friend whom I served this to ordering a case on-line before we finished the bottle. Fresh and crisp with stone fruit, seasonings and floral overlays creating an alluring bouquet.

  • From 75cl, good cork, opened but not decanted 2 hours, improved until final drop several hours later. Citrus blossom, jasmine and humid summer night air, perhaps a hint of kerosine(?) on the nose. Big-bodied entry, well-oaked and oily-textured, seriously aromatic with little electric sparks of acidity; long, tingling finish. Super-clean compared to LdH Gravonia/Tondonia, less thrillingly complex than the very best competition at its level (Tondonia GR 1994?), but so much more attractive than the many musty-mouldy bottles I have encountered too often of late (Tondonia GR 1991...) This still seems young, benefits from serious air time and isn't going anywhere in a hurry. Terrific wine, excellent value. 91P+(+)

  • Several weeks after my last review we revisited this wine and found it even more charming and enticing than before. The floral component in particular impressed and, this time, we found more body and oak--both of which were very welcome. A factor may be that we drank it a little less chilled. There is considerable delicacy about this wine, but I am starting to think it will certainly hold for 5 years, and probably improve too.

  • With dinner at Rioja in Denver, so note that altitude may affect tasting notes. That said, the Murrieta Capellanía 2015 drank beautifully over a few hours. It was crisp, with tart citrus on the attack, followed by tropical notes of papaya and coconut, ending on a light touch of oak that smoothed smooth it out and enhanced both body and finish. It should age nicely for several more years, but I’m super happy with where it is now, especially at this price point. Lovely.

  • The most apt one-word description of this wine would be "charming". It looks as of it might be a heavyweight, but is of medium weight, tending to light. The nose presents an intriguingly delicious aroma of something which, try as we might, we could not identify. That aromatic resurfaces on the palate, and very nice it is too. It reminded me a little of the junket I was fed when I was a child. There is also some shortbread, summer flowers and a tiny tinge of banana. We drank this with a variety of cold foods. It went happily with duck rillette and soft cheese, but was unhappy with smoked salmon and salad. I am guessing this unusual wine would fare best with shrimp and crab, and not so sweet desserts. It is 100% Viura, a grape few of us frequently encounter outside of blends. Clearly it is a grape to watch for, and seek out.

  • Pale lemon, citrus, pear, apple, blossoms, lees and some MLF, medium alcohol, every so slightly oily texture, backed by real well integrated but strong/high acidity. Lovely long finish. Slightly out of balance (?) but really enjoyable.

  • Tasted blind. Citrus, white flowers, and apple notes on the nose. Nice acidity balancing out the rich, somewhat oily texture with more lemon/citrus notes on the palate. Nice finish. Very interesting wine and great QPR.

  • Method: 51 degrees; 2 hour decant; Sauvignon Blanc glass

Look: pale+ yellow; many very slow legs

Nose: Beeswax, minerals, salinity, sweeter baking spices, light lemon, and a hint of something unexpected like petrol

Palate: white flower petal, mineral, beeswax, honeysuckle, light young oak, light caramel, long finish of white pepper, mineral, flint, light smoke and white flower petal; dry; medium+ body; medium acidity (mayyybe medium+)

Overall: Good fuller body, good balance, and solid richness with enough acid make this wine very enjoyable although the flavor profile doesn't really thrill me. This was better on day 2, but I didn't take notes then. Certainly not LdH's Rioja Blanco Reserva, but it's also much younger and less expensive. Very enjoyable wine, that might be worth cellaring for 5 or so years to see where it goes.

Update: It's even better tonight on day three, which I didn't expect. So smooth, round and rich, with deep orchard fruit and caramel, amongst other notes. I'll buy a few more to cellar and check on this in at least 5 years.

  • Really lovely food friendly wine.
Roast red apple & pear, ripe gooseberry, lemon meringue, cream, butter, cheese, caramel, smoke, clove and cinnamon. Dry, medium acidity, fairly grippy but ripe wood tannins. Pronounced intensity, full body and a long finish

  • Pale yellow. A bit subdued at first. With air, this shows a sort of oily citrus character. Quite rich on the palate. Good length. Just a shade one dimensional. Be interesting to see it in a couple more years.

  • Pale yellow color with a slight hint of green. Nose of green melon, lemongrass, and even some salted cheese. Exotic. Less fanciful in the mouth with heavy doses of pear and smoke followed by a chemical, slightly medicinal hit which was not unpleasant and provided some depth. Light-to-medium weight with a medium, slightly acidic finish. Food pairing is important with this wine and we were happy with our roasted chicken with mustard, soy, and garlic glaze as an accompaniment.

  • Lots of gooseberry fruit, also white peach and apricot all in a smoky frame. You are also bound to bump into wecoming floral freshness. Palate again fresh with crisp acidity embedded in a slightly creamy texture where more herbal aromatics add to the complexity. Nice and smoky finish. This is really sensational for the price and you just can‘t go wrong opening this - it doesn‘t hurt the purse if you pour it for a layman and the expert nose will find this fascinating, especially since outside of Spain maybe Viura doesn‘t really feature in wine circle conversations.

  • Very oak-influenced on the nose, classy; smooth, complex, lovely flavour. Creamy and moreish.

  • Deeply concentrated lime and pear fruit with good underlying acidity. I really like the salty minerals on the tangy and complex finish. Leaves a saturated layer of green stalk and silty spice on the tongue with strong minty note. Very impressive and interesting wine. 92+

  • This continues to amaze me. Slightly salty mineral notes, fine green herbal aromatics. The fruit is slightly citric, but there is also green apple and pear. More pear on the palate and a citric finish. One of the best value for money whites I’ve ever had, being confirmed time and again.

  • Informal dinner. No detailed notes. Another magnificent bottle of this. It’s a charming wine, perfect for an apéro, with a round, very well-integrated acidity. Crisp but soft and with a good aroma profile centered around citrus, floral and spearmint aromas. Good concentration and delineation. Medium+ length. Quality-price-ratio (not considered for the rating) is extremely good.

Decanting: A 30 minutes decant will do good things.

  • Gold straw colour. Caramelised apples / pears. Acidity that is subdued but present enough to make this wine balanced and with notes of Wood very interesting. EUR 26 is a steal for this bottle.

  • 100% Viura (Macabeo) - nice cool freshness. Gooseberry, cooked pear an citrus. Nice acidity paired with creamy wood notes. Very interesting. As far as I remember the first time for me trying that variety. (Tasted at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter 2019 Masterclass.)

  • This bottle confirmed my impression gained during a tasting at the winery back in August (rated 95 points): This is a Viura masterpiece with a complex bouquet and a perfectly integrated, soft acidity. So good to drink on its own but also perfect to pair with food. Not the most complex wine but at roughly USD 35 this is a steal. 94 points.

TN: The nose needed some time to open up and become this expressive spearmint, ashy, toast beast I experienced back in August. On the palate instantly better due to a higher intensity and complexity with fresh herbs, spearmint, baking spices, nice minerality, ashy and some toast. Super fresh with a high but perfectly soft acidity (… so many whites usually don’t manage to tame the acidity). Very nice harmony and medium- length.

Decanting: Not decanted, got better with air, a short 60 minutes decant is advised.

  • A slightly buttery and fresh, green nose showing iced tea fruit and a very distinct herbal overtone. Super fresh, acidic palate with lots of citric fruit. Medium length finish. Have scored this 95 in the past which now seemed a bit aggressive, to be honest. But this remains a great everyday white wine, fresh enough for casual drinking but with enough substance to go with a meal as well.

  • Spain Trip (w/ some Rioja gems): Tasted at the winery. Oh boy, what a surprise. This is really really good. Hyper expressive, round, complex and fairly long. Reminded me a bit of the Dana Sauvignon Blanc 2016 I had some months ago, which was the best SB I‘ve had to date. I didn‘t know that Viura can reach these hights but I guess in the hand of a gifted winemaker and coming from 100 year old vines this is what is possible. Drink now, I don‘t know if it can get any better.

TN: Intense nose jumping out of the glass with waves of spearmint, some lychee and ash scents. Loads of minerality on the palate, with wet rock, ash, smoke. Fresh herbs, sweet white fruit, white flowers, some vanilla. Very round and soft but very fresh with the acidity perfectly integrated. Good mouthfeel and very good length.

    Decanting: No decant needed.

  • Tasted at the winery along a wine pairing lunch. From 100yrs old vines. Bottle number 3810 (out of 50k), aged 16mths in new French oak. Petrol type of aromatics, ash, a bit of oak, white fleshy fruit, also citric notes and white flowers. Round and balanced palate, crisp acidity and long finish. An astounding white Rioja.
