2016 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

  • I am a firm hold on this one. A ton of potential, but the tannins are still very high here. Long decant required if drank now.

Nose is glorious and worth the price of admission alone. Red cherry, cranberry, and raspberry. Some cigar and tobacco smoke. A minty/menthol note. Floral. Autumnal. Slightly medicinal. Licorice and anise. Complex and deep.

The huge tannins shut down the wine on the finish for the first 90-minutes or so, but the high acidity helps keep it fresh and as the wine opens up it gets better and better.

A classic Barolo in the making that will reward the patience. 95-97 point potential.

  • Ruby red in colour. Floral aromas, red cherry, leaves in the nose. On the palate, full-bodied, structured at beginning. Afterwards, fruit-focused, delicate tannins, fresh acidity. The 2016 is already easy to drink and enjoy, but let’s expect the gift of aging.

  • This wine scored very well, and I do think it is deserved. It was a banger of a year that's created elegant and refined Barolos, young as they may be. This one is medium ruby, would have guessed it a bit older if blind, tasty now, but tannic, and has tons of potential, so as gorgeous as the nose is now, I’ll hold them for another 5+ years.

The nose is a treat: Stewed raspberry, sour cherry, black cherry, a lovely tangy note that’s like starfruit, black licorice, anise, some black fruit, already sense the underbrush, leather, forest floor, and wet tobacco, but the fruit is primary for sure. It may be a reach but I do notice some tree fruit on the nose, like a very ripe peach.

Palate has great promise but as of now is too tannic to really shine just yet. Medium bodied, big fruit, INTENSE cherry cola dominates, the finish gets a bit of cigar box, cedar, and baking spice. Quite complex as of now, but I really think this will shine in say the 2030-2040 range.

Drinkable and enjoyable now with a few hours decant, but also lots of promise for future. Cheers!

Tunnel? Men mycket bra.

  • This is a very good wine. The nose was beautiful. Very floral, with some spice. Right now it is very locked down. Even after 5 hours of decanting it remains very tannic. Good red fruit, some roses, a bit of char, and a decent mouthfeel. I will wait 5 years, for the two remaining bottles.

  • I sensed the potential, but found this to be locked up pretty tightly. It didn’t really make sense to me to judge the wine at this point, and I’ll wait a bit before I open another.

  • This was a bit better than I remember, a bit richer and more balanced. Overpriced though, but maybe another five years would make a big difference.

  • Nose: spices, earthy. Tasting: blackberry, blueberry, spicy tannins (pepper, anise) slightly green, would benefit from more years. Tannic. 87p

  • At the open:
Smells of wild dark red fruit and barnyard earth, showing an appealing dark depth.
Tastes of reserved elegant red fruit with a touch of oak scratch

    After 1 hour (decanted)
Smells of dark brooding black and red fruit with a touch of sweet dates over cold stones/earth; more “put together”
Tastes of dark red fruits (black cherries) and earth; much bigger than at the open and less, but still pleasant scratch.

    After 2 hours (decanted)
Smells of brooding dark red fruits with a touch of floral perfume
Tastes of confident red fruit with wood that still needs to burn off

    Medium-full+ bodied

This is an engaging and enthralling animalistic wine that is ever evolving and has a long way to go before being ready. A three hour decant is a minimum requirement. Lovely Barolo.

  • NY Wine Experience 2022; 10/20/2022-10/23/2022 (Marriott Marquis): More reserved and bigger tannins in style. Grippy. Dark and a touch brooding. It's energetic and drinking well but a long life ahead and probably more time to really be in the true 'drinking window'.

  • Powerful Barolo with tight tannins. Still young but very nice with osso buko.

  • Haven't had a Barolo in a while, and am a bit out of my depth on that varietal, but this was quite pleasant and balanced - so alive, with racy acidity but some power and elegance too - lively, energetic red fruit. 93+pts.

    SUPERBE!

  • Leathery tartness with a red fruity acidity that is showing well. Licorice and tobacco from the cask lift this drink up further after being exposed to air.

I was surprised how well the 16 is showing already. It feels a long decant got this ready to go as a nice, charming young Barolo.

  • 7/6/2022 Double Blind Night at Kevin's: [Tasted double blind]
Med+/Pronounced intensity, tart red fruit, sour cherry, unripe strawberries, cranberries, raspberry, earth, wet dirt, baking spices. Very grippy, high tannins, med+ acid, med/med+ body. Compared to the San Giuseppe last week, this was almost closed off and shut down in comparison. Still a strong showing, but tasted too young with harsh tannins and high acid throwing imbalance to the fruit. Despite that, this was still a wine with lots of potential and good stuffing. Needs time. 91++ pts

  • Superb but very young (obviously). I'd try to wait a few more years, though it does drink relatively well for its age.

  • U: licht robijnrood, helder
G: veel rood fruit zoals kers, ingetogen in geur en licht aromatisch
S: fijne en prettige tannine, goed mondgevoel, blijft mooi hangen, hoog in zuren, afdronk heeft iets pittigs. Ook peper en aardse tonen. Zeker wat houtrijping

  • Weekly tasting group; Italy. 5 flights of 3 wines. (@ RW): Beautiful bouquet with red fruits, forest and barnyard impressions, herbs and spices and beautifully dosed oak. On the palate juicy red berries, forest floor, oak, herbs and spices, beautiful acidity, some pepper, and firm tannin in the long finish. Will improve over the next 10+ years. Beautiful wine.

  • Paired with eggplant parmigiana and it was dreamy good!

  • A really good vintage for this wine, and it's drinkable now (though not sure when it will close down). The 16s are just beautiful across the board form what I've tasted so far. Rich without being overpowering, there is a lot of tart cherry up front, then an irony minerality and some spice. It was great as a BYOB alongside the Vajra Albe 2016 at Lucali in NYC!

  • A structured and perfumed but relatively lean style.

Decanted for two hours (not long enough). Red and black cherry, plum, red currant, tar, purple flower, iron, thyme, tea. Started rather dark fruited but with another hour of air in the glass it moves more toward sweet red cherry type fruit. M to M+ body, M+ to high acid and tannins.

This is delicious even now if you like young Barolo (though I suspect the early drinking window is closing) but it’s wound up and will develop/unwind for many years. I’ll wait at least five years to open my next bottle but it may need ten + to be fully in a mature drinking window. It’ll be worth the wait because this is excellent. Great qpr too.

8-8.5/10 for now with clear upside

EDIT: meant to have the rest of this the next night but forgot about it in the cellar so finished it on night four instead. Now it has strong notes of dried ground rosey flowers, cinnamon stick, that sort of thing, along with similar fruit character as before but less fruit forward. Tannins are still grippy. No sign of falling off after four days open, just some really mild oxidation. Great wine and I’m excited to have this in maturity.

  • I have plenty of wine to drink but I couldn’t keep my hands off this bottle since the 1st one I opened was so delicious. This bottle is even better then the 1st. Enjoyed with eggplant parmigiana.

  • Far to young and not really a pleasure. Potential rating.

  • What a beautiful wine and showing so well right now. A great example of what makes 16 such a special vintage. The nose was so expressive with lots of red cherry, plum and floral notes. Similar notes on the palate that build with terrific presence. The tannins start firm but are very fine and never get in the way of the wine. It finishes with a long finish that leads you back to wanting more. We enjoyed with an Elk Tenderloin and Veal chop and when had with food the tannin really recede and it reaches even new heights. My favorite 2016 so far and a terrific value as well.

  • what a great barolo, especially for the price ($79 including tax / shpmt), this was already accessible (tho this could shut down at some pt for 5 yrs or more)... definitely had med plus acidity and definite tannin... but the fruit was strong and primary and red in nature... wonder if this isn't the wine to age 40 years, but certainly (but for shut down times) good to go for at least 20 years... I just bought a case

  • Double-blind. This note is from memory but what an impression it made! I called Barolo along with a few others at the table; likely from a vintage like 2012 or 2015 since everything seemed well and open for business. Dark cherry fruit, dried herbs, and roses with monumental structure. This was a touch glossy on the fruit side and I thought that had more to do with the generosity of the vintage rather than the producer. We were all surprised (and also a bit, “yeah, that makes total sense) when it was revealed to be the 2016 Cavallotto Bricco Boschis. Surprised because the 2016 vintage from such a traditionalist was drinking so well out of the gate! Not surprised with the glossy nature of the fruit which I find to be a hallmark of Cavalotto; simply gorgeous texture. An utter delight now and, I suspect, will be stunning with time. Now that I think of it, the 2013’s were very good upon release as well and there are a lot of similarities between the two vintages.

  • Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2016
Such an interesting and amazing wine! Far too young but I think it has a fabulous future. On the nose, it opened up with some rose petals, red fruit and menthol. Over time with exposure to air, the nose became rather sweet, a sweet nose with herb candy, sweet candy, some funky animal notes, sweet fruits, licorice, hints of wild flowers, cherry, menthol, mint, sweet herbs, barnyard and wild herbs, sweet barnyard, expressive nose.
On the palate, impressively full of sweet and very juicy red fruits, sweet licorice, herb candy, very juicy, with a backbone of sweet fruit, dried fruit, herbs, clove, anise, menthol, some grippy tannins, mint. Great depth of flavour, great mid palate, very juicy and lush indeed, elegant. Lush red fruits and cherries with hints of licorice and herb candy; this has a very delightful sweetness indeed. 96/100

  • Farge: Nokså mørk til å være nebbiolo
Duft : Tørr kjeller, noe lakris og fiol
Smak: Heftige tanniner, men med rund kant. Lyserøde frukter og litt floralt preg.

    Dag 2
    Duft: Hint av florale toner
Smak: Fortsatt kraftige tanniner. Noe stubbe og mørkere frukter.

Later til å ha stort potensiale. Drikkevinduet virker riktig. Kjøp mer.

  • Tok-ung! Tungan fastnar i gommen. Fantastisk utvecklingspotential. Öppnas tidigast om 3år.

  • It simply needs some time, 2-3 years at least. I love a good Barola, just hate the wait - lol.

  • Very good. Aerated to decanter for 2 hours, served non-blind. Extremely elegant, highly floral and wonderfully structured. This was mostly linear - no surprise given its youth - on the med+ bodied palate, but the purity of the red fruits remained vivid, intense, and I was quite happy just to sniff it all night. A small glass on day 2 was more expressive; the structure was even more obvious. This will live for decades. HOLD. highly recommended

  • Checking in on 2016 Barolo: Ruby at the core with scents that seem as if they rolled off broad shoulders as scents of smoke, menthol, potpourri, black cherry, & plum. The palate leads with bitterness & tannin before sour cherry under-ripe strawberry, & red plum come through in the mid-palate. This is a wine that will need a long, long time in the cellar...of the 3 bottles I have left I plan to wait at least until 2036 before checking in again. This was a wall of tannin, and of the 2016's I've tasted it clearly needs the most time sideways.

  • Decanted 2h. Quite dark. Fruity black cherry nose with some rose, iron and a little licorice. Juicy cherry fruit on the palate that meets a wall of big, chewy tannins and bright acidity. Like the E. Grasso Ginestra Casa Mate, this is no ballerina. And while not closed, you get the impression there’s more here than it’s showing. Most of the 2016s offer a lot of early pleasure today and are worth trying. Less so this one. If you have it, I’d recommend holding off a while. I expect to like this a lot in a few years. Next bottle 2028.

  • Tasted 3 times this month incl a 98-100 Parker/Galloni top 10 Barolo 2016 tasting where only Burlotto Canubi surpassed. This evening a full bottle.

This one stands out with its cool fruit, energy and delicate taste that last forever. The tannins are there for sure, but very smooth and the balance is awesome. More balance and delicacy than weight and power. Dryness that is often seen ie. in same wine in 2013 is not so profound, but some years (+5) waiting will do good. Might close down and hide its beautiful red fruit and notes of licorice, iron, dry roses and tar. Be sure it will come around even better.

  • f you like Classic Barolo, you need to load up the truck! This is such a great, finessed expression of Barolo, and still relatively easy to find at a reasonable price.

Bricco Boschis is just next to Monprivato and basically a monopoly of the Cavallotto family. The perfume is to die for with red berries, cherry, menthol, roses and forest floor. On the palate it‘s balanced and elegant. It will likely close down at some point but today its as beautiful as young Barolo in the fruit phase can be.

Her får man mye topp Barolo for pengene.

  • Wow, for en Barolo! Cavalotto leverer virkelig i 2016.

  • Again, shocked at how little attention this producer has gotten relative to its brethren (Rinaldi, Mascarellos, Sandrone, Voerzio). Having tasted in person with Giuseppe, I can state unequivocally these are some of the best wines in the Langhe, hands down. Classic, delicious, ageworthy, complex, good family behind it, what's not to like?

  • Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2016.
Mye å bygge fremtid på her.

  • Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): Tasted at the winery. From an unlabeled magnum. Aged in large oak barrels for 3.5 years. Nose of potpourri, herbs and lifted red berries. I really enjoyed this one - very pretty and elegant. This will be one to add to the cellar for me.

  • Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): From a magnum in an unlabeled bottle that is prob better described as a custom blend from the large barrels than the final wine. It is however very tasty. Perhaps a bit higher alc at the beginning. Already has some lovely black fruits, good acid. Tannins are very fine. There's a nice and rustic style to the fruit. It's not getting bottles for a few more months and then released a few months after that and definitely a primary wine, but also one that is showing super well.
