  • Much too young. Even after a three hour decant. I will wait at least two years before I open the next one.

  • Outstanding young Pegau with good fruit, some tension and some of the expected funk.

  • Ripping good restaurant bottle. All the white pepper and grilled plum. All the garrigue. Everything I want in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Amazing mix of fruit and spice, lots of vigor, very precocious.

  • Young. A lot better 24 hours after opening.

  • My god this is good. Incredible nose. Sensuous mouthfeel. Probably the best young Pegau I’ve had. It’s definitely less funky than the 2018 and more on the elegant side. Sure it will get better but it’s just soooooo freaking delicious right now.

  • Decanted 4hrs. While lacking a little of typicity I associate with a Pegau nose, that is kirsch, white pepper and garrigue, it still generally smells pleasant and ready to proceed to tasting this young CdP. The immediate word that came to mind is density. The 19 Pegau is stacked within its own structure, not quite a black hole like, but a least perhaps a neutron star (thank you Google) with its compact and chiseled physique. Veers in between red and black fruits, no discernable definition yet, but it will get there. There is a wealth of other material present, but it’s hard to break it down into the various components at preset. So let’s make it easy and say go ahead, try one now in the name of science, but optimally give it at least 5 years, ideally more line 10 to gain its true form which should be excellent in due course.

  • Seems something like a more structured 2009 to me. Hints of the nice volatile and brambly complexity of Pegau hiding behind the wall of forward fruit and ripe tannin, with the sweetness of big fruit from a warm year, balanced—in the context of the vintage—with some more backbone than the '09. Clean.

  • Hot, green, young, tannic. Tasted blind. Way to young.

  • Medium dark garnet, a touch of leathery brett on the nose, not surprising; palate is somewhat reserved, dominated by deeper raspberry notes, a bit rustic, some rocky/leather notes, a touch on the rustic side, with moderately firm tannins. Far too young at the moment, but drinkable if you're tannin tolerant. A wine to look in on in a decade, when I suspect it will have softened and lightened a bit, which will put in a more light-medium bodied style.

  • Rating on potential, this was very tannic on day 1, on day 2 this was more approachable, dark red jammy fruits, roasted meats, ground earth, very good balance while missing complexity of the better vintages. Hold for 4-5 years.

  • Much better than the last bottle, this seems to have settled a bit. Somewhat lighter than expected, plenty of garrigue, less so the concentration, that is the classic Pegau. But, but, you sense the beef blood arriving,m this will be very good. Much too young still, needs a couple of years at least to find it's real identity. 92++

  • Full bodied, traditional styling, high quality real cork.

So every vintage for the past decade+ I blindly buy one or two cases of Pegau RR and I have stock going back to early 2000s. That's nothing compared to other fans, but it is to say... 2019 is incomparable to any vintage I've touched - even the "off" bottles.

Today it has three unusual aspects, for better and worse:
    - Lacking the typical house style. Blind I would say it is like a general high quality old school CdP. Variability is the heart of Pegau RR, I'm into it.
    - The red and blue berries immediately hit in the form of a rich compote or jam (not "jammy"), it's really wonderful and remarkable.
    - Marred with an awful, spiteful finish that comes across like diluted isobutyl esters. Even after three days of machine vacuuming each night, it was reduced to palatable but the problem is now you're looking for it and can still find it in there.

I've had so many CdP that are said to be too alcoholic (recently 2018 Charvin), but never find them that way. What's going on here?

Bad bottle? Needs time? Can't score today as it's a gorgeous wine that is almost a dumper, but hoping with some years it will develop beautifully.

  • Very dark. Slightly muted nose reveals aromas of black raspberry, creosote, black olive tapenade with coaxing. Tart and slightly tannic on the palate, with flavorful fruit hiding behind the curtain. Finish is very long and a bit saline. This is a Pegau that really needs a chance to snooze in the cellar. I would hold it until 2025, then enjoy over the subsequent ten or fifteen years. 92-94, but right now more like 90. I’ll score it 93 based on potential!

[Opened 24 hours early and tried it, then recorked… no real change with slow breathing.]

  • Wonderful flavors and depth with good complexity May not contain that extra “it” factor from the exceptional vintages, but this is a crowd pleasing version for sure.

  • Bubbling my way back from the jetlag (My place, Portland OR): This was a pop and pour and it was consumed fairly quickly by 5 people. Even though this didn't get any air treatment, it was showing so well right out of the gate with black cherries, raspberries, cranberries, blackberries, licorice, leather, currants, lavender, spice notes, and violets. There is a lot of complexity and youthful exuberance right now even on pop and pour. The Full bodied feel is deep and youthful with medium acidity and chewy, high tannins. The structure is understandably young right now. Beneath that structure, lies a real tremendous CdP that is a real delight right now in its infancy.

  • Full-bodied, deep, and fresh, with layers of dark kirsch, thyme, flowers, olives, and herbs. The wine has density as well as freshness that lingers on the palate. There is peppery spice, dark red berries, and green olives that hit all the right notes in the finish. This is going to age and evolve for at least 2 decades or longer with ease. The wine is a blend of roughly 80% Grenache and various other AOC-allowed grape varieties. Drink from 2026 - 2040,

  • Medium ruby. A somewhat reserved but surprisingly fresh nose offers aromas of red cherries, black raspberries, kirsch, new leather, lavender, dried thyme and a slightly medicinal but not painfully distracting note from brettanomyces. Full bodied on the palate with medium to medium+ acidity, obviously high alcohol and a touch of lick-your-gums sort of tannins. The brett really comes out to play on the palate and dominates both the fruit and floral notes. This isn't my style but assuming you are cool with lots of brett and booze, I suppose this works.

  • Popped one for the team - but really, this is an akward teenager as of now, all over the place, will leave in the fridge for a couple of days and report back.

  • French road trip, mainly Rhône valley; 9/4/2022-9/18/2022: From open 75cl at Domaine Pegau tasting room, Châteauneuf du Pape. The scent is dark, closed, hulking, brooding, like a clenched fist; full-bodied, tannic-closed entry; bitter, vice-like mid-palate tannins cover what might be roasted blackberry fruit, but so closed down today it’s hard to tell. The finish has tannic grip, and a gorgeous flash of retronasal sandalwood, almost as if the wine was saying “go away and leave me alone for 10 years; here, however, is just a little hint of the pleasures in store”. Drink starting 2030 perhaps? Or better from 2035? Fairly priced for its excellent potential at 45 EUR cellar door. 93(-94)P

  • day 1: after pouring half the bottle into a 1L erlenmeyer, ~45 min later i'm greeted with perfumed soy sauce. brambly blackberries. roasted meats. leather. cedar. very well integrated tannins. long finish. incredible balance. everything there is to love about the rhone.

day 2 review: that soy sauce roasted meat quality is no longer in the forefront like yesterday, instead the dark fruit takes center stage. the interesting parts are still there, but in a bit better balance to the fruit (though i still really liked it on day 1). still a tremendous wine. is it possible the finish is longer? perhaps the oils from the chimichurri i'm eating along side are helping the finish.

admittedly, i don't have very much experience with wine at $50+, but man i do not feel cheated. at all.

  • Some youthful qualities, but in the early developmental stage. A short decant helped the wine open and made it more approachable. Shows a very aromatic nose of flowers, lots of red and black fruits, herbs, minerals, taut leather, and sweet anise. Bright plums, fresh raspberries, dark berries, sweet licorice and cherry kirsch liqueur flavor fill the mouth. Very smooth mouthfeel showing some early complexity. Great long finish that lingers with cherry, tobacco, and cocoa. Enjoyed at a family gathering with a range of Italian seafood, pasta and meat entrees. Drink through 2039+.

  • Bolder nose than '18 with more - currants, pepper, pine and herbs. Nicely concentrated with what I will call tannin-adjacent structure. Has a really fun white fruit/white tea element in the middle. But that is also a bit uncanny valley with great dark fruits and a slightly brooding element. Super high potential here and I did really dig it.

  • Vinetasters: 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Stewed cherries akin to black forest cake on the nose here. Clearly some volatility, as well as a very strange brettanomyces note that resembles a kriek more than any barnyard funk. Some menthol and herbal notes on the palate, but a short finish in all respects except for some bitterness. My 6th, group's 6th.

  • Though the wine is young (I think it will improve a bit), I enjoyed the great aroma and taste and gave it 95+ points.

  • Delicious, pure, but insanely young. For me this is not yet expressing what I want to see from a Pegau, as it is too locked up in youthful structure at this point. I would wait.

  • The first of my small tranche of 2019 Cuvée Reservée’s and I figured it would be fun to share with the Tasting Group. Popped and poured and presented double-blind. The wine pours a translucent, deep ruby with magenta rim, near opaque core, medium+ viscosity. On the nose, the wine was clean with macerated raspberry, cranberry, and pomegranate fruits. There were purple flowers, some black pepper and rocky minerality along with a slightly gamey note which was quite charming. Both the fruit and non-fruit characteristics were confirmed on the palate. The wine finishes dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. There’s a compelling sense of power and energy in this wine. Everyone was in the Rhône but most were in the North; from Saint Joseph to Cornas, citing that they believed this was Syrah. However, two in the group called Châteauneuf du Pape and one actually called producer (!!) but missed on vintage (2016). Universally, the wine was fawned over and the dude who called Pagaü thought he actually favored the 2019 over the 2016 he had a while back. While I’m not sure I would go that far, the 2019 is truly quite stunning already and seems to have the guts to see a very long and wonderful life ahead. These are currently enjoying their customary early drinking window however, that window will likely close within a year or so and then I could see this shutting down pretty hard until 2025.

  • There are wines that are so complete that they give pleasure early and from the beginning and that then also another ten to 20 years. The "Cuvée Réservée" of Domaine du Pégau is such a wine. And because in this 2019 vintage, as in the previous vintage, it appears so open and drinkable early, so charming and sensual, it should by no means be underestimated. The wine has sprinter qualities, but is actually a long-distance runner. The only problem may be that one finds the sprint so fascinating that one leaves nothing of the wine for the long distance. Definitely, we are dealing here with a classic from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which can be called such because it is so classically vinified, as only a few others. 80% Grenache meet here about 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% other typical Châteauneuf-du-Pape grape varieties. Yes, in fact, all of the appellation's permitted red grape varieties are included in this cuvée. After hand-harvesting, a rigorous selection of the best grapes took place, which were then fermented spontaneously in concrete cuve, together and without destemming, without temperature control - just as Laurence Féraud, the Grand Master of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, does with all her wines. The cuvée was then aged for two years in large old barrels. As I said, it does not get more classic than this for a "Châteauneuf". With this style, the winemaker has created a legend that she will seamlessly continue in 2019.

Nose: At first it offers a still slightly smoky nose, remnants of reduction, but also hints of lightly smoked bacon and lightly toasted Provençe herbs. Then it opens up quite quickly, offering lots of purple flowers, herbs, olive tapenade, licorice and pepper, earth and forest floor, wild berries, cherries and plum notes.

Palate: On the palate, the herbal spice and earthiness pair with a wonderfully fleshy fruit, with peppery notes and garrigue. What intrigues us is the wine's acidity and freshness, salinity and tension. The tannin here may like to integrate a little finer over the next few years, which one should certainly allow the wine. But it is already a charmer. It is a wine that makes you close your eyes and think of Provence on a summer day.

  • Nez un peu fumé, herbes de Provence, bacon fat... Très belle acidité et fraicheur, cerise rouge grillotte, très belle salinité et buvabilité, très belle tension.

  • Richly colored, the wine exudes black hued, red fruits, licorice, flowers, herbs, olives and earthy nuances. Full-bodied, meaty, peppery and long, there is density matched with lift awarding you vibrancy, sweet, ripe, spicy wild fruits and a touch of garrigue in the ending, giving you more complexity. This is going to age and evolve for at least 2 decades or longer with ease. The wine is a blend of roughly 80% Grenache and various other AOC allowed grape varieties. Drink from 2026 - 2040

  • Pop and poured, this is the first impression.
Open expressive nose typically Pégau with black fruit, pepper, licorice and garrigue. Like the smell of Provance on a hot summer day, just like i love it.
The palate has black fruit and a hint of kirsch, but it is pretty covered by a lot of structure, tannins and dryness.
Still you feel the fruit and this has a really good balance. It is full bodied with a pretty long beautiful finish.
This is open and drinkable, but of course very young.
