BWC 23 - Lignier Clos de la Roche: Served next to a compromised 98, decanted for an hour-plus before drinking. The nose is so very pretty, with delicate and dark and floral-inflected fruit, highly perfumed. Very pretty on the palate too, well balanced and composed, and a seamless silky texture, all class. Without the aromatic breadth of the 01 or the 02, and without the density of flavor, the impact on the palate also. But the wine actually continued to improve over a few hours open, and it is a very, very good wine. It's that the others were better, and by some margin.

Good 2000s are just drinking so in the zone, and this too is no exception. The best CdR today based on what we had together with the 1995. The 2000 was open nit, showed lovely earth and spice, really giving - true hedinistic delight and totally ready but will hold.

200 Burgundy Grand Crus from vintage 2000, 4-day blind tasting (Singapore): Deep, rich, dense, dark fruit, some plum here, really top, the most dense wine in this flight, darker pitched. All the CdRs showed really well in this tasting, much better than the CSDs. Today with Global warming, CSD has come to its own.

Tasted blind. Convinced it was new world. Fruit driven, perhaps the preceding 1991 wine was lean and very dry. Slightly confected, almost a touch jammy. Didn’t excite considering.

So much Pinot goodness going on here, and well into it’s secondary phase. It pours cloudy with aromatics of dark, sweet fruit, leaves, soil, and smoke. it’s soft yet concentrated in the mouth with rounded fruits, freshness, and satisfying length/finish. I’ think this is the peak window

Two Chave birthdays (Portland): Very, very nice. Firmly put together, but has a nice mix of red and dark berries on the nose. Very pure with a medium-long finish. In its drinking window, but holding well. Superb food wine. Short decant (30 min); would have benefitted with more but opened nicely in the glass.

One of the three or four best burgundy (a Claude Dugat charmes chambertin may have been even better) I had the chance to drink, and for sure the best Lignier.
Perfect maturity, but could be drunk in 5 or 10 years easily.
Still lots of (mainly) red fruit, but some secondary aromas as well. Length it top notch, and is even topped by the silkiness of the mouth feel.

Phenomenal wine. Drinking so well now (popped and poured) with an array of fresh red fruited flavours, floral notes, tinges of spice and more savoury earthy and faintly smoky elements. Remarkably light on its feet with the acids giving it good lift, and so fragrant with incredible depth and presence. Everything that I want a Grand Cru Burg to be.

Drank way too young. Popped and poured at the end of a dinner with the cheese. I had not planned to have the wine and just picked a bottle from the cellar without researching it out. Did not take notes. It really needed some air. Red fruits, spice. Good structure. I wish I wouldn't have opened it.

Consumed at a tasting, this wine had a red/purple center and red/orange rims. The high- intensity nose of rhubarb, red fruits, and brown spices was impressive.
In the mouth, this wine showed great ripeness, rounded tannin, and excellent length.
While still too young, this showed great promise. While nice to drink now, I expect this to move into awesome territory in a few years. Thus, it should pick up a couple points with time (maybe 10+ more years).

Absolutely top notch stuff and one of the best 2000s I've had in a while, though the style if very distrinctive and may not please everyone. Both nose and palate are very reminiscent on Leroy and Dujac. Beautiful, pure animal and red fruits character. Pretty sweet. Perfectly integrated toasted oak. Very long.

In which I host the Tuesday Supper Club. (My place.): I'm not sure if this is a slightly off bottle, or if we're catching it in a grumpy mood, but this didn't live up to expectations. My first sip showed beautiful cherry fruit and a silky personality, but that persona disappeared in a hurry and an unbalanced acidic profile emerged and essentially took over the wine. The red fruit receded and a stinging nettles character took over. Even food didn't help it much and the bottle remained half poured and there was no improvement the next day. Low B.

Wowsa, this is a very pleasing wine. On the plus side, it has sweetness, sophistication, minerality, medium density, great terrior sense and super attractive earthy fruit. The only negative is that is a 2000, which means that it doesn't have staying power for the long run.... but that is FINE as you want to drink it now and be HAPPY!!!

Deep ruby; sappy, palate-staining black raspberry fruit infused with stony, gamy goût de terroir. Packed with fruit and character, yet so delicate and deft on the palate. This is a phenomenal success for the vintage and a great bottle of Clos de la Roche by any measure. It's drinking very well now, but has the tannin and stuffing for another decade of evolution. Grand cru through and through. I could happy drinking this any night of the week.

Beginning of the Month Burgundies (Chez Panisse Cafe, Berkeley): Light color comparable to the Fourrier tasted alongside it. Combination of red and black fruits, but a mere echo of the intensity of the nose in bigger vintages. Very good acidity and focus for a 2000, and a dark core of meaty black cherry fruit, again with a touch of greenness that was present in each of our reds tonight. Good finish. This tries hard to be serious, in the mold of Hubert Lignier wines. In the end, it does not possess Grand Cru depth or grip, but enjoyable and excellent in the context of the year. I would tend to drink up now as I don't see it improving, but a few at the table suggested another 3-5 years of positive evolution.

Dark crystal ruby in color with no signs of lightening. Aromas of dark strawberries, oak, leather. This full bodied wine tastes of candied dark fruits, some licorice, smoke, and plums balanced by good acidity and resolved tannins. This is a big wine that is great right now, but will improve with aging. -JBL

Intensely, and beautifully perfumed. On the nose there are sappy cherry and dark berry flavors, earth, what I can only describe as 'funk', and a whiff of tar that is less intense than I've noted in earlier vintages of this wine. In the mouth I noted brown sugar and brown spices (ginger?) to accompany the fruit. The tannins are fine and this closes with minerals, spices and lingering perfume of fruit.
My score would be a few points higher if the flavors were a little more concentrated on the palate. Drinking well right now, but will be better in maybe two years.

Nose of ripe black fruit, with depth in the nose that is unmistakably Grand Cru. In the mouth, medium to full-bodied wine, with ripe tannins that are very closed at first. The wine opens after about 45 minutes to reveal sweet black fruits that seem a bit light. Some complexity and layering and a lovely extended finish. The second bottle had much the same nose, but with much deeper black and red fruit in the mouth, along with riper tannins. Balance is now striking, and additional complexity in the mid-palate. The bottle variation was significant. Perhaps the first bottle was somewhat oxidized due to partial cork failure? Based on the second bottle, if the wine puts on additional weight with age, especially the mouth feel and in the mid-palate, it could be super. Now, very good.
