  • Lovely Cab Franc in a classic Chinon style albeit with a bit more richness and roundness of fruit. Heavy green olive, blackberry compote, eucalyptus, bell pepper. In contrast to some other recent notes, I think this is drinking great right now and has good varietal characteristic.

  • Very nice, solid wine

  • Opened, poured into decanter and back into the bottle, let sit, open, for about 2 hrs. Then: Nose something like blackberry, darkish fruit. Taste is very distinctive blackberry, maybe some other dark berry. Nice balance; medium intensity; tannins and acidity not an issue. The blackberry taste stayed throughout the glass(es); finished as it started. A friend who likes cab franc had a hard time recognizing this as cab franc, but found it "interesting". Not what I was expecting, but tasty.

  • Sorry, but even with 24 hours of air this is not the time to drink this wine. It’s blocky and largely impenetrable. There are hints of good things to come, but there are just glimpses of herbal, earthy or tobacco notes that are quickly sucked behind the event horizon of the wine, never to be seen again. Cellar this rather than waste it.

  • very simple an austere on opening but fleshed out nicely with a double decant and an hour or two.

Wiff of funk blew away and what remained was pretty berries and there was pretty typical cab franc palate and finish though not not terribly deep or complex it was interesting and satisfying

  • Beautiful bouquet with rustic impressions, some oak and bell pepper. On the palate red berries, a lot of fresh acidity, sticky tannin and green bell pepper. Give it 3 – 5+ years of ageing.

  • Medium deep purple, cloudy, translucent. Nose dominated by Brett, otherwise subdued with hints of herbaceousness. Acid is tart, with some brambly characters and green capsicum herbaceousness to indicate Cab Franc, but this is all about the dirty winemaking and the Brett. Hugely disappointing to see the evolution from the last bottle. The palate is abrasive and drying from the Brett, and the wine has no redeeming features. I would be very reluctant to buy Baudry again, as there are better expressions of Loire Cab Franc.

  • Quite young at the moment, not showing its full complexity. Opens up a little more on day 2. Seems like it will be a nice wine but I would hold off for 5 years or so.

  • Showing fantastic balance now. It's open for business, too. I think some years of rest for better integration and for stitching together would be ideal. There isn't the fruit density of the '18. This one really shows off harmony right now. Good dose of that Cab Franc funk up front. Followed by cassis, violets, tobacco and charcoal. Bright, lifted palate with tart acidity. Focused, fine tannin. It shows more coiled here. Just terrific. Weird they are not charging Boisee price for this yet.

  • PnP.

Cherry raspberry chocolate tobacco herbal and cola. Huge elegant complex. Amazing. A revelation.

  • Early pull in the name of science. Day one was polished, grapey, and simple; day two was substantially improved with more complexity and actual cab franc character. Good at the price point, but needs time.

  • Highly aromatic, pepper, lavender, violets, cherries, oak tones; full body yet inviting and fresh;

    Cabernet Franc; 13% alcohol.

  • Dark cherries, barnyard, tobacco, green leafy herbs and bell pepper. Medium plus body with great acidity and abundant slightly granular tannins. Nice and distinctive.

  • Beautiful purple color. Opaque. Very forthcoming red and black fruit on the nose initially, which faded too quickly. Palate on the savory side but was hoping for more fruit in the balance.

  • This pours medium purple in the glass, with a slight glass staining character. The nose is immediately open, complex and classic Chinon. Aromas are of blackberry, ripe black raspberry, violets, new leather, burlap, peanut shells, gravel, and light touches of green tobacco leaf. The palate is very youthful with bright, ripe and sour dark berry fruit on entry turning to medium gravelly tannin and medium plus acid. The finish is only moderate in length but shows a berry seed character. Definitely more savoury. All in all, despite being worried about the ripe vintage and 14% alcohol on the label this really impressed me. Very classical Chinon here from Baudry. Also my first ever Le Clos Guillot and while I wouldn't exactly rank this above your average Grezeaux I’m digging it.

  • Opened, poured into decanter and let sit about 2 hr. Then: Nose dark fruit. First sip is very mellow/soft; darkish fruit, maybe blackberry; drying tannins on the finish. Over the course of the next hour+, this firms up a bit and is not quite as expressive; finish still the same. Didn't really get the green streak or barnyard others mentioned. Much more approachable than I expected at this young age. Not a lot of complexity at this point, but enjoyable.

  • This is a very good wine today for the $33/bottle I paid. It's big, rich, and chock full of green pepper and barnyard, both of which I adore. There aren't many red wines I'd pick over it for the price. However, I think it's nowhere near its peak. I'm no expert in aging Chinon, but I predict that this wine blossoms with more time. Scores of 95++ (on my scale) won't surprise me, but they may take 5-15 years. I have 11 more bottles to spread over the years, and I bought the 2020 too. Highly recommended if Loire cab Franc floats your boat.

  • Superbe cab franc profile, clean, not brett just goodness.... needs 4 or 5 years but upside potential to current score.

  • Ruby red with a violet tinge, youthful, near opaque. Hint of barnyard on opening, but this dissipates with aeration. A little subdued on the nose, dark cherries, blackberries, floral notes with some coconut, green capsicum. Lean acidity, grippy, slightly drying tannins, some bitterness on the back palate. Needs time in bottle. Would I buy another bottle? Yes, it needs time to mellow and develop.

  • Popped and poured; no formal notes. While I found this delicious and enjoyable out the gate, the 2019 “Le Clos Guillot” always felt like it was really holding its cards close to the chest. This continued for almost a week before it really started to show more of what it has to offer. If you have multiples, it might be fun to try one while it’s really fresh but the best will come after 2029.

  • This is rich and also crisp with grippy acidity, juicy dark fruit and a streak of green. There is plenty of material here and it just needs some time to coalesce. Very fresh and tangy on the finish with good lift and mineral cut. 89+

  • This was big and ripe. Showed the vintage. Not a bad drink but not a Loire CF either. Not overly tannic or anything just a bunch of big ripe fruit

    Hopefully time helps

  • Purpleish deep red. There is a mix of slightly confected red and purple fruits on the nose, along with a more ferrous type of character, and a touch of undergrowth with air. A little sweet fruited on the palate, before finishing somehow a little cooler and just a touch short. A decent little wine which I would suggest for mid-term drinking. At €20 the value seems OK.

  • Pnp. Fresh smells of garden shop, raspberry/blackberry, gravel. Raspberry core to the palate along with some earthiness and mild green pepper. Medium tannin, fairly high acidity. Overall a delightful, very typically Chinon wine, with potential for improvement with a couple of years in the cellar. Very fine and excellent QPR especially on sale for $30. Well well worth it at that price.
Score: 91-92. Relative to expectations: ++

  • Superb young wine. Dark-fruits, but lifted and light on its feet, with great length and complexity. Will be stunning in 5 years.

  • Top notch Loire Valley producer, top notch vineyard, top notch wine. Complex, deep, long finish... Chinon lovers will be quite happy with this wine (as I was). Wish I had bought all in stock at Hi-Time Wine.

  • 2019 Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot was nuanced, elegant and mineral-driven. The youthful Loire Cabernet Franc was clear and medium ruby in colour traces of fine suspensions. Aromas of blackberry, violet and grilled bell peppers were accompanied by touches of meatiness and barnyard funk. Over three hours of aeration, notes of earth and crushed rocks emerged.

The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, balanced with medium level of finely grained tannin and high level of fine acidity. The freshness on the attack and the core of minerality on the mid-palate were remarkable. Flavours of fresh blackberry and raspberry transitioned to graphite, wet stone minerals and Ceylon tea in a long, delineated finish. The 14% alcohol level was well-concealed. The empty bottle weighed 558 grams. The wine is certified organic by Agriculture France.

From the winery website, the Cabernet Franc vines are cultivated on a southwest-facing limestone coteau, with clay on the top of the slope and yellow tuf (limestone) towards the bottom. The vines are planted between 1993 and 2000. The must in fermented in cement and oak vats over two weeks. The wine is aged for twelve months in two to five years old, used oak barrels, followed by another nine months of ageing in unlined cement vat. It is bottled two years after harvest, typically in September, without filtration.

  • Dark purple. Very complex herbal nose, green chartreuse, dark fruit, and mineral notes. Low acidity, medium tannins. Serious and restrained palate brings light purple fruit, rolling minerals, and a long finish reflecting the complexity of the nose.

  • Soaring aromas of black cherry, leather and pepper that lead to a silky, fresh blackberry, tobacco leaf and mineral driven palate that is both long and savory.

  • Nose of cassis, ballpoint ink, and a bit of licorice. On the palate, very fresh blackberry with a leafy edge. Medium weight, with tannins that are well-hidden at the moment. What really sets this wine apart at this young age is the clarity and sense of energy, which are off the charts. With a few years to integrate properly, I imagine it will be absolutely lovely.
