  • fully resolved and mature rioja, old leather and pipe tobacco, delicate and light in the mouth, just a lovely old wine. Finishes a bit quickly if I’m being picky

  • Bought recently, from a different source than the last bottle. In great condition. Medium garnet colour. Red fruit, dill, coffee, light cedar, tobacco, intense spice, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and balsamic notes, with medium-level acidity, fully resolved tannin, and great persistence. Smoothly textured and well balanced. Has everything one would be looking for in mature, traditional-style Rioja. Equally enjoyable on day two. Drink now.

  • Aged Tempranillos from Rioja and Ribeira - Virtual wine tasting (Skype): Wine 5 of 6. Bought recently, from an untrustworthy source... Medium brown; limited complexity of fading dried fruit, dill, spices and balsamic notes, with an unpleasant aftertaste. Not pleasant to drink. Improper storage, from what it seems...

  • Travel to the restaurant has done this no favours. Very fine, muddy sediment disseminated through each glass give this a subdued and muddy character. Very coffee ground and mocha on the nose. As the sediment settles slightly, though not fully, in the glass the fruit starts to show a little more brightly. Good acidity as one would expect. Overall, a muted experience though still plenty of wine here, just not as stellar as it could have been. Matches the grouse well though. ***

  • Wines of San Sebastian; 7/9/2019-7/11/2019: Still with a bit of grip and life back. Dried fruit and decomposed wood. Lively on the palate. This one should be drank now if you don’t have a wine cellar with excellent conditions.

  • 3rd LRA Tasting Event of the Q4 (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Cloudy. Reduced aromas of horse guard and little apple.
With time iodized notes and red berries .
Elegance and parsimony nose, a very slow delivery.
On the palate with great acidity and good body still for a 30 years old wine. Overall a deli full of reminiscent of what a truly Ardanza should represent. Respect.

Turbio.

  • Vina Ardanza vertical: Rounder, softer than '82, some fruits, salty meat, a flowery element on the nose. Quite a decent old Rioja, but not that special on the grand scheme of things.

  • The nose was simply gorgeous with depths of plum and crushed cherry fruit, dark spice tones, dried flowers and hints of undergrowth. It was enveloping on the palate with silky textures giving way to black cherry, orange peel and herbal tea. The finish was long, lingering on blackberry, dried strawberry, and hints of citrus with a bitter twang. This is perfectly aged and a testament to Vina Ardanza’s ability to age.

  • nose:sour cherry,dirt earth,cigar box,evident stew fruits,with air(fresh pour) get tea leaves

structure:soft(tannins fully integrated); intensity:abv average; texture:close to gd; depth:close to gd; acidity:close to gd; energy of fruit:abv average; complexity:abv average

    palate:black cherry,smoke,plum,tobacco,sweet liqourice

conclusion:the bttl is stil alive but hve to admit i tink its goin downhill coz with more air in the glass, the mid palate doesnt hve enuff fruits to support the sour pruney finishing.overall,i stil like the wine especially from every fresh pour into the glass,it show slitely more primary charaters.

  • February Rotating Wine Dinner (Mon Ami Gabi - Chicago, IL): Thought this showed really well! Drank alongside the 2001 Viña Ardanza and the 1981 La Rioja Alta 904 and while the 2001 was just too young, this was in a great spot. Definitely juicier than the 1981 904 I was really fond of the berry tones, subtle meatiness, and spice notes. A great wine that made me realize that aging these wines should be more of a priority for me.

  • great bottle. this note is being written after the fact. comparing spectator note at the time of release with current jay miller note indicates that the wine has derived great benefit from bottle age. miller also had the advantage of tasting a bottle at the winery that never left the cellar.
