  • Decanted for 2 hours as very tight on opening.

Light ruby colour with some very slight browning at the rim.

Nose is not particularly pronounced with red fruit, some floral notes, a bit of wood.

Palate. Nice acidity up front and then strong but fine tannins that coat and dry the mouth. Quite a lot of spice, I presume from the oak, comes next and there is a hint of high alcohol in the mid palate. The oak and tannins dominate the fruit and floral elements somewhat. Medium finish.

Decent enough but this feels like it is too young. At the same time, it seems to lack the complexity to suggest it will change much with age. Perhaps better with food?

PS: Quite a bit better next day. Tannins are less overpowering and there is more strawberry and cherry on the nose. I still think it’s a bit one dimensional but will probably improve a bit from here with age. If you have any in the cellar, I would decant into a wide mouthed vessel 12+ hours before drinking

  • Piedmonte with only Barolo and Barbaresco (Restaurant Primo in Kannai, Yokohama): With Chatters, Vintomas and Mats @PRIMO. Theme: Old Barolo/Barbaresco.

This wine feels terribly young in this company. Decent and young fruit on a more than decent tannic structure. Even if it's young, it did well with the pork.

  • Cellartracker in the flesh with Stefan, Mats & Tomas (Primo Yokohama, Yokohama): Medium minus intensity aromas of pretty ripe dark fruit; plums, a little earth, dried herbs, pot pourri, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins are drying and persistent, a little okay spice, dark fruit persists showing the plums but also a little cherry, a little sweet spice. Interesting, simple but nice.

  • Lovely ripe fruit, oodles of crushed rose, some liquorice and tar. Plenty of complexity on the nose and palate. Intense acidity, almost too much but it’s just balanced by the flavour concentration, and smooth tannins. Decent length on the finish.

  • My experience was much like SLB83’s, unfortunately, and not the other recent reviews. Decanted for 3 hours and found it incredibly muted on the nose and palate. Poured it back into the bottle and left for 24 hours and it had improved, giving nice red cherry and floral notes. Still very delicate though and lacking concentration in my opinion. Maybe there’s bottle variation as some seem to really enjoy this, but on the whole I was disappointed. Possibly is just too young at this stage.

  • This is incredibly young. Very basic nose, and on the palate everything is covered under a thick blanket of tannins.
Decanted it for 3 hours (as per a previous tasting note), but it made no difference really.
Had it with wild duck fillets and a port sauce, with root vegetables and potatoes dauphinoise. The wine showed a bit better with the food, but this needs another 7 years to shed the tannins and show its true potential, which this no doubt has.

  • This really needs time to breathe - opened up fantastically well after 24hrs in bottle. Suspect 2-3hr decant would do nicely.

On nose - rich with cherry, spice, some chocolate but still has a freshness.

Palette - nice fruit, lovely acidity, smooth tannins.

Expect this will age well over next 5-10 years, but my 6 remaining bottles certainly won’t last that long!

  • On the nose it’s like duck with cherry sauce: meaty, peppery, with ripe black cherry fruit. Plenty of fruit on the palate with a slight dusty note, though not unpleasant. It’s drinking beautifully but has all the structure to develop nicely.

  • What a wonderful first bottle of a much heralded vintage in Barolo! I originally sampled this in Berry Bros shop on Pall Mall and was shocked at how approachable and delicious this was so bought a bottle. Ok it’s not going to be the most complex of wines but there’s enough there to suggest it will have room for improvement. The colour is a lovely bright crimson with already a slight orange tint on the edge. The nose has typical tar and roses but also some hints of violet. I didn’t decant this wine and it’s noticeably smoother on day 2 and 3. There was a slight bitter edge to the palate in day one which has now completely dissipated. It’s got a lovely rich core of sweet dark cherry fruit and tannins are there but approachable. Works with food but enjoying the last few glasses on its own. Ordered an additional 6-bottles on the strength of this one. A great Barolo to enjoy while waiting for my more prestigious 2016s to come round! A great credit to the BBR wine buyers! At £29.95 it’s also stunning QPR!
