(Blind tasting) Medium-fullish nose. Very mature. Slightly oxidized. Dried cherry, walnuts and Oloroso-like burnt sugar notes. Fullish, still tannic. But very mature aromas. Leather, nuts, dark chocolate. Almost over the hill. Makes an old-school impression. But that could be due to the cellaring, which this particular bottle had not lived through. Other bottles could be better.

Sampled from a pristinely-cellared bottle that had been double-decanted and allowed significant time to aerate, this deep garnet wine is clearly in its "sweet spot." With up-front floral notes of lavender, it delivers a package of red currants, bitter plums, dried herbs, tobacco and exotic spices. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (14%) and with nicely integrated oak, it flexes a bit of tannic grip on the mid-palate and lengthy finish. At this point the wine's fruit/tannin/acid components are all in harmony. For well-cellared bottles, this should remain the case over the next five years. Drink now-2025.

Sunday afternoon at UE Straits. Aired in bottle for 1 hour and drank over the next hour. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty coffeebean, spices, stony earth minerality, ripe red cherries, hints of mushroomy earth merging. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), formidable grippy mouth-drying high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of very concentrated deep sweet ripe red cherries, stony earth, leather, oak spice, coffeebeans. Long finish. Very good quality. Lots of depth, but not as complex or faceted as I would prefer. Barely entering into a drinking window. Still can continue to develop over the next 10 years. Usage of some barriques here is evident. From Cascina Ornato cru in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba.

Super tight dark cherries. Potpourri of cedar and crumbled dry leaves, strong enough to give a little tingle in the nostrils. Taste is tart and grippy, like a little old Italian lady with an attitude. And then came the meal... And the little old lady disappeared, and she came back again, in lingerie, and she said, “Let me show you my round, lush and silky that finishes for miles and miles.”

Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2016 Edition; 10/21/2016-10/23/2016 (Piedmont, Italy): From Magnum, decanted and served. Had the slightest touch of TCA not enough to call it a flaw but became a bit more evident towards the end. Quite a classic Barolo, not a heavyweight in any way, good dark cherry, light roast meat feeling. Very approachable now and probably best to have it sooner than later. A very good 91-92

The nose showed smoky cherry with minerals, dried leaves and hints of savory herbs. It was dark on the palate, driven by minerals and tart black fruits, on a medium-bodied frame with cheek-puckering tannin. It finished on dried cherry and hints of wood. Although this came across as slightly austere, there is some pleasure to be found in its current state of evolution.

PnP. The good news is the oak has subsided. The bad news is that this barolo has subsided. It's not bad, there just wasn't much there. Some fruit, but of indeterminate variety. Some tannin, though nothing distinctively nebbiolo about it. A decent wine, but one to drink up, not save.

PnP with pizza. Thankfully the oak has integrated somewhat. Still way too young. With 30 minutes of air it really dries out becoming so tannic it's not particularly pleasant. The fruit is there, though I didn't get much in the way of tar and roses. A quality if new school style, that I hope will improve with another 5 years in bottle.

Slow ox'd 12 hours in advance. Surprisingly not utterly blown away by the 98 Gaja Sperss and 98 Giacosa Santo Stefano Riserva. Very dark and tannic but approachable with the extended slow ox. Dark fruit, spice, and tar on the nose. Palate is rich, full of dark sweet fruit, and some wood. Not in the same class as the Gaja or Giacosa obviously but showed respectably in their company.

A little darker than the typical Barolo. Classic aromas of red and black fruit, crushed flowers, cinnamon, tar and vanilla. The fruits continue to show on the palate along with the sweet spice and oak. Definitely a modern (non-traditional) style of Barolo, but done well. Tannins are well integrated, medium+ acidity, medium+ finish. Outstanding.

I acquired this wine 4 years ago. It is just now becoming approachable. The tannins are still present as shown on the long, long finish, but the fruit is making it's presence known. The wine is beginning to balance well. It took 3 hours for the two of us to finish the bottle, after 2 hours of decanting.

This bottle is rather more open for business than previous examples. Tannins still robust and mainly noticeable on the grippy finish, but the fruit is starting to assert itself. Black cherry and brandy snap nose is deep and beguiling with plenty of floral and meaty nuance. Medium-bodied with some rich sandalwood and cherry plum fruit backed with a hint of licorice root and brambles. Great balance and thoroughly delicious. Powerful build but really up on its toes - like an olympic sprinter in the blocks. Plenty of improvement left to come but this wine is just about coming out of its shell. Another 2-3 years will help but stubbornly moving into an early drinking window.

Nose of vanilla, oak, cream, pepper, bramble, dark fruit, strawberries, cherries, strawberries and cream ice cream, purple color to a light brick rim, big bold legs, great spice and acidity on the palate with smooth tannins and good fruit, bramble and pepper as did the nose. Nice lingering finish. Khamen is right in that there is great potential but where I disagree is that it is rather approachable now with reservation depending on if you like your wine aggressive, passive aggressive or passive. I think this wine is in a passive aggressive state so more time will benefit the wine but it is still approachable now with a good several hour decant.

There is some great quality here but right now, and with a 30 minute decant, it's hard to get to. Fearsomely tight and backwards but with oh-so-much potential Ever seen those dishes that are cooked in a thick layer of clay? It's a bit like that. Inside is something delicious an succulent but right now you've got to chew through the clay as well. After several hours some exceptionally clean and precise fruit bursts fitfully into life on the palate, but it's clear there is so much more to give. Give it time but potentially special. From 2014?

Drank along side the 97. The 01 has far more classic barolo fruit, but if the oak doesn't integrate all you'll be left with is a coconut/vanilla bomb in a few years.

Daniel's Birthday (Osvaldops): Black leather, brackish brambles, more ruggard and dirtier feeling like an old farmer with dirt fillled nails. Bbq meats, sweeter dark fruits. More voluptuous but lively fruits. Delicious despite being much sweeter in style. Attractive red cherries.

2001 Italians for Daniel's Birthday (Osvaldo Ristorante Italiano, Maxwell Chambers): Deep and brooding when compared to the more expressive 2001 Sandrone Le Vigne, but this was a really good wine in its own right. Decanted for 4 hours, but this was still very tight. Nose was rather subtle at first, with sweet cherries and dusky earth wed to little touches of rose and tar. It opened up with time to slwoly reveal lots of dark fruited depth and bits of spice. Very masculine palate. Dense, tight-knit, muscular, but impeccably balanced ad integrated, with great depths of dark fruit, black cherries, plums and blackberries. Long, smoky finish held more spice, a sprinkle of rose petals and dried fruit hints. Will be gorgeous in a decade or so - this needs time. A really nice wine though.

Is this Barolo? Deep colour - deep nose - tangy at first on the palate - you feel this on the side of the tongue. After time (and a different glass) this gives up more classic Barolo notes. Wow - very young, packed full of restraned potential that needs 10-15 years to come out. Really quite wonderful but drinking this now is a crime. Will be stunning. Pretty damned good now but what a wine in a few years.,

Rather extended 36 hour decant may give a hint of thing to come. Stunningly bright and vivid colour. After the extended aeration the nose is a tremendously evolved and delicious pot pourri of summer flowers, with lavender and roses to the fore. Extremely elegant and balanced. Attack is fleshy, ripe and bone dry. Strong acidity and again excellent balance. Honeysuckle, more lavender, fresly cut roses and charcoal smoke dominate as it sails effortlessly into a long and refined finish. Extremely aromatic and perfumed this is a beautiful Barolo in a rather feminine style. If the (forced) aging in decanter is a guide to how this toddler is going to grow up then it truly has a bright future. 93+

Deep ruby colour, complex nose of spice, herbs and tar. Initially very closed- this is still a baby and has a long and hopefully happy life ahead of it. Plenty of berry fruit on the attack and a long, soft and complex finish, but took a long (24 hour+) decant to start to open up and tone down some firm but beautifully integrated tannins. Wonderful balance, I've got a feeling this is going to last and last. Rating is based on current drinking, ths will get better and better.

Had this one in the Italian restaurant "Il Pinolo" in Osaka (they have a branch in Tokyo as well, which I can also recommend). The price was the usual Japanese multiplying rate of European price times three, but it was worth it. The wine showed brown sugar notes with tar, rose petals and fresh woody notes. All this was underlined with nice acidity adding to the overall impression of an "all balanced components wine". We did ask the waiter to decant which was definitely a good idea as the wine got better and better with time and air. Certainly this will still keep for a much longer time but it is nice to drink now already.

Had this with dinner at Casanova in Carmel-by-the-Sea. This was excellent. A classic Barolo. Soft nose, a little spice. We decanted it and both the nose and palate opened up after an hour. Still quite tight ton the finish though. This one could easily cellar for another 10+ years.

An extremely young-tasting wine; it has been in bottle for a year the distributor told me, but tastes freshly bottled.
Notes of tar, camphor, and spice on the nose. The fruit flavors (black cherry, plum) are pure and precise, with just the right levels of sweetness and acidity. The wood influence dominates today but it is multi-dimensional and well-integrated. JS in the Spectator calls this "refined" and that's right on the money.
My rating is conservative.

Decanter Great Italian Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark Hotel, London NW1): From a single vineyard (actually 3 specific plots on one estate) this Barolo is very tannic with good structure and alcohol. A bright, ruby red in colour this looks like classic nebbiolo. Forward and very inviting aromas of fruit, especially damsens, on the nose lead to more herbacious characters of mint and clove. A very big wine, rich and powerful, with ripe fruit and a long finish. Very nice.

This one could easily cellar for another 10+ years.

this was the wine of the night at our holiday party. Rich full bodied with ripe concentrated fruit, long finish and plenty of depth to go for hours. It didn't take long to open up either and when it did it was a show stopper!

Very nice.
