2023 Napa in the City: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Not a perfect bottle but that actually works for the wine a bit. There’s just this background hint of brett which makes the wine a bit more interesting and adds some character to it. Enjoyable.

Bought a case in ‘87. Started opening bottles in 2005. Every 3-4 years or so. It has always been balanced and delicious. It has never let me down. Gorgeous? no. Pretty? Yes. Has it been worth cellaring for 35 years amongst the other expensive and gorgeous inhabitants? Absolutely.

Chicago Wine Flock...Gary Opens Cali Cab (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Great nose with mature black fruit, spice, mint and and leather. Flavors are similar, just lsightly less exciting, but this is a very charming wine still drinking well. I used to really enjoy Groth wines of this era in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but rarely taste them these days.

Purchased upon release and stored in cool passive storage. Perfect fill and cork. No seepage.
Color: ruby/garnet with slight bricking at the rim. Nose: herbs, smoke, red fruits, leather and spice. nice... Palate: Way too much acid! Tart and lean! Like sucking on a lemon! Otherwise flavors echo the nose.
I think this wine was over-manipulated in the cellar by adding acid, which may have given the wine balance when young but never bodes well for the long term... A shame!
Next day after opening, the wine is no better...

Dark ruby color, woodsy/cedar, clove, bing cherry, bright acid, beautifully balanced, outstanding. I can only believe the tasters who did not enjoy this wine had bottles that had not been properly stored.

DC Crew's Gem Tasting - 3rd Annual (Palena - Washington, DC): This wine was an interesting auburn-plum color in the glass. The aromas remind me of stewed plums, rhubarb and anise. The palate showed a complicated medley of medium tannins and sour cherry, plum, must and tobacco flavors. A hint of seaweed to keep you guessing. I thought this wine would be spent, but it's still got enough going on to keep me interested. Actually, over time it opened up to show some green pepper and sweet cherries. Surprisingly good, and it goes to show once again that I like older Napa cabernet much more than younger ones.

I wasn't sure a 25-year old Gorth Cabernet would still be in it's peak drinkability years, and iniatially thought my concern was warranted. This wine was tasted like a great cabernet, five years past its peak, out of the bottle. The taste was dominated by pepper and oak, but not much fruit. However, within half-an-hour, the flavor began to escalate into an explsion of life. Just delicious. As usually, I opened a second bottle, just for the fun of a small blind tasting, and saved about 3-4 ounces for the next day (the other bottle was a 1983 Rutherford Hill Cab). The Rutherford was quite good when first opened, but didn't improve much. In contrast the Groth was even better the next morning, and better still, the next evening. I have some 87 Groth and am anxious to find out if the 84 was exceptional, or if Groth is a much better producer than I was previously aware.

With K and Miranda at home at dinner (fix-and-forget-it stew). Dark ruby color. Stains the glass with thick legs. Very deep fruit in the nose, redolent with cassis; extremely inviting and enticing. Beautifully integrated spicy oak. In the mouth, there is fine rich fruit, but curiously and surprisingly soft. Long lasting in the mouth. Excellent wine, probably at its peak of maturity. 5-12-15-7: 89100.

With K at home at dinner (pizza). Dark Ruby. Deep nose; complex, on the edge of maturity. On the palate, quite tannic, but plenty of ripe fruit. Very nice. 5-11-16-8: 90/100.

At the Beaumont office for the ETSI trial. Dark ruby. Very attractive nose in an elegant style of Cabernet. Very smooth and drinkable already. Very good balance. Long on the palate--very interesting finish. 5-10-16-7: 88/100.

Brickish red color. This still had firm tannins and a fine fruity core. Cassis and blackberry notes. 89-90 points.

GROTH, GROTH RESERVE, FENESTRA, AND DUNN (Walnut Creek, Ca.): rich, stinky, fruity nose fades to coffee, leather, and fruit, big body, highly structured wine, great acid and sweet fruit, needs 4 years.
Group #7.
