Dark garnet. Cassis bouquet with some eucalyptus notes. Soft attack, dark cassis mid-palate, fine tannins and somewhat intrusive oak. Medium body and final.

This is on its way out. Still has good structure, hints of leather, red fruits fading, and the finish approaching a tart state. Not what it used to be since I last visited it, if you have any DRINK NOW! A once amazing find that was great to drink on release, then developed into a pretty textbook example of classic left bank has now seen its best years gone by... It still has life, but its coming close to an end..

Dark and deep ruby red color. Meaty, juicy and massive aromas with red fruit, leather, wood and some caramel. Massive and fruity in the mouth. Had expected more complexity. Feels rather extracted, and not quite what I connect with a Saint Julien.

Opened 2 hours prior. Dark garnet. Cassis bouquet with some sandalwood notes. Balanced, refreshing and complex on the palate with a nice mid-palate of dark fruits playing off a finely polished oak tannin background. Medium final. Very nice balance.

Decanted 1.5 hours. Dark garnet at rim. This opened over 1.5 hours and improved steadily. Showing cassis and blueberry with some acetaldehyde notes on the end. Bouquet is fleeting. A bit angular on entry with a quick build to a moderately complex midpalate of cassis contrasting against an acidic, somewhat bitter backdrop. Shortish final with fine drying tannins that are still not integrated.
Comes off a bit shrill and thin.

I think it's spot on. Slap bang in its window. Mrs wrinkles nose and says its "mouldy". Stock response to claret but this mix of leather and fruit works really well but not too complex and sophisticated.

Popped and poured at 12C. Notes from memory second day. Dark garnet. Cassis nose, some faint eucalyptus notes. Soft entry, builds to a somewhat thin mid-palate showing dark fruit, licorice, and fairly substantial dusty tannins. Some heat and astringency on the tannin laced final. Overall a bit of a so-so experience. Surely this is early drinking days but I did not get enough a promise here that I am confident there will be a great deal of substance to interest me down the line. I'll give it another 2 years or so before trying another.

Nose was pretty expressive with coffee, cassis but palate was very disappointing seemly diluted. Perhaps still affect by the Gaja I had in the afternoon

Simple Series VIII: B.A.G (Burg, Alsace, German) II (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): An off-theme bottle, so just a quick taste, and some brief notes. I thought this was a pretty good second wine. It had been opened for a couple of hours by the time I got to it, with a further half an hour or so sitting in the glass. A bit of funky earth on the nose, along with whiffs of tobacco, some toasty mocha acccents and buried cassis fruit scents. Pleasant enough, very typical St Julien notes I thought. Palate was rather more impressive. Clean cassis flavours showed surprising depth for a second wine, with good balancing acidity and some tobacco and a little smoke wreathing around the mid-palate. Finish had decent if unspectacular length, with some bittersweet tannins marking the wine's end. Very decent for a second wine as would be expected in 2005. Should be much better given another 5-6 years in the bottle as well.

BAG 2 Dinner (Asia Grand, Singapore): A very classic 2005 Bordeaux with a certain breed to it. A well-made second wine. Only the slight bitterness at the end bothered me. This was better than the 2nd wine of Gruaud Larose I had recently.

Alcohol :: 13% As a second wine, this is remarkably good! Expressive nose of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant along with coffee, tobacco leaf. Nicely structure, good mid palate weight and delineation with tobacco, pure dark fruits flavor and coffee notes supported by lively acidity, firm tannin with intense finish. Buy - Maybe.

This is the second wine of Leoville Poyferre. Leoville Poyferre has received very good comment in recent years. For example, Robert Parker has recently given Leoville Poyferre 2009 an exceptional score of 97-100!
This Pavillon de Poyferre 2005 has very good concentration and intensity. Medium and fine tannins. Have good flavour of black and red fruit. Long length. For a price of about US$30, this wine is recommended.
Wow this wine blew our socks off...The price was 20euro’s for this wine and it tasted like a 50 euro wine...incredibly big velvety very smooth tannin layers of dark fruit...goas on and on...unbelievable this is a second wine...and surprise surprise the big brother Chateau Leoville Poyferré 2005 wasn’t better it was almost the same wine just a tad more full bodied...no reason to pay four times more for very less difference...there was also 2006 Pavillon de Poyferré but this was very thin...www.everyoneweb.com/chateaujochen

Quality second wine. Everything you want from a wine supposed to stop you drinking the good stuff too early.
