Medium tawny as a 27year old wine would be expected to look. Drinking well. There's a balance and suppleness that one finds only in good mature burgundies that sets burgandy apart from all other wines. But finding "that good mature burgundy" is the tricky part! This is one! This is such a dignified wine. Fruit is starting to fade so I'd drink this up by end 2025. DeSerenity Len, Den, Mike

Hazy, sour cherry, not much spice or sous bois. Fairly uni-dimensional and needs food. I find it out of balance toward too much acidity in the absence of fruit and sweetness. Drink now

Lovely perfumed nose of ripe red berries, sandalwood and kirchwasser. Some slight spice and sous bois as well. On the palate very fresh with high acidity, silky structure and more of the sweet, ripe berries. Some earthy minerals, almost totally resolved tannins. Medium+ lenght. Best bottle so far of this.

Make sure you decant this for 2-3 hours & it will be a revelation, tied WOTN with the 03 Cos Estournel, better than the 96 Bart Bonnes, 04 Palmer, 08 La Tour Vougeot VV, 08 Pignan & 00 L’Evangile drank tonight

Wine is simply in a magnificent place. Fully resolved with the perfect blend of terroir and mature fruit. We drank 4 bottles of this wine at dinner, and they were all perfect. The best representation of Volnay Santenots that I have ever had. We drank several bottles of the 1993 as well. It is beautiful, but the fruit has faded with the terroir shining through. Both were sensational wines just different wines based on their evolution.
Volnay Santenots is a great wine that needs at least a decade to express itself and will last for 40 years in a great vintage.

Jean-Pierre Reniard Burgundy Wine Seminar (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant): Tasted in Riedel Burg glass. Pop and poured. Drank slowly over 1 hour. Appearance is murky, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with a lovely bouquet of mushrooms, earth, red cherries. Developed. On the palate, high acidity, medium alcohol, melted tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of mushrooms, earth, light spice, red cherries, melted potpourri. Long finish. Very good quality. Red Burg at the sweet spot for me. Nice tertiary elements not decaying yet. Drink now and enjoy.

Decanted for about an hour prior to pouring. Really nice. Plenty of red fruit left, with earthy/forest floor flavors as the most obvious tertiary notes. Tannins have completely melted away. Enough lively acidity to keep it refreshing but not so much so that it is tart or sour as some have noted. I found there to be good complexity but definitely more elegant than powerful.

This is the time for game and mushrooms, preferably combined in a hearthy stew. And what better than a mature bourgogne to go with it? The 1996 Robert Ampeau Volnay 1er cru Santenots is initially a bit subdued with mostly slightly murky sous bois. After about an hour of air there is more fruit - lingonberries, cranberries, hints of strawberries. High acidity, some tannin. Classic, elegant if a bit tart. Wish for a bit more body and silk.

I rewrote this note a few times. On opening this was disjointed with ripe mature fruit that was blown out on the palate. After 1.5 hours it totally transformed, developing a backbone, strong minerality, and decent complexity. The longer this is open the better it gets with stone, underbrush, and bright cherry. Very pretty and in a good drinking window.

Nose of crushed stone, red fruit, some forest floor and nice freshness. At 20 plus years, very fresh and delicious. Crushed stone and red fruits dominate. Acidity holds it together. Not a lot of complexity but extremely enjoyable to drink.

nearly fully developed, this shows leather, earth, and a hint of toffee. some dark flowers and minerality. a little bit of cherry fruit still hanging on, but this is mostly secondary. a nice acidity makes this very fresh and easy to drink, but it lacks that next level of complexity. a nice aged wine.

Slow oxed this for about 5 hours before pouring the first glass. Still a dark colour with no real sign of fading or bricking. First glass was still pretty tight with some dry tannin on the finish. Thereafter, the wine was absolutely a point. Surprisingly dark fruit profile. Certainly at the riper, richer end of the scale but no overripeness or heaviness at all. Just plenty of dark, rich and precise fruit. Really a superb showing and a bargain at the price.

Beautiful bottle, much more expressive than the last one I reviewed almost a year ago. Just a wonderful older Volnay which I would say still has about five years left at this level. It fell off ever so slightly after about an hour open, but otherwise delivered in every respect. Even at the end there was plenty to enjoy.

OK, I got one of the good bottles this time. Dark red with bricking at the edges. Beautiful subtle notes of sous-bois, framboise, and a bit of turmeric with hints of espresso in the background. Aromas just waft from the glass mutating a bit in intensity as it opens up. On taste fine tannins hit the front of the tongue and upper palate with medium/light intensity. Cherry, raspberry, notes on taste with a slight 96 acidic zing. Goes great with food :) Medium longish finish. Good flavors going down. This really sings today - enthusiastic given the variation in previous bottles. Very nice. Just to clarify for others this is a bit linear in profile, the way I prefer, rather than expansive..

It needs a bit of aeration in bottle to come to live, but once it does it shows really nicely, with black cherries, violets, spices, and a hint of cinnamon. Volnay And Surrounding Communes (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Peak drinking window. Juicy, nice lush fruit on the nose with good secondary aroma. Sharper acidity then I remember, which may be an indication that this could be entering the downside of the curve. However, the tannins are still there. Pepper, licorice and nice secondary profile on the palate. Good finsih.

Wine continued to evolve and develop secondary flavors over three hours that it was open. Fragrant, red fruit on the nose with bright acidity and cranberry/cherry dominating flavors and developing earthy undertones. It serverd as good compliment to the duck breast in sweet\sour sauce.

This is absolutely lovely. Deep dark core, slight bricking around the rim. Floral perfume initially on the nose which gives way to fresh raspberry, subtle strawberry and a good amount of mushroom and earth. The nose developed so well in the glass and was intoxicating. The palate is surprisingly dense and powerful. Vibrant and fresh with balanced acidity. The earth and secondary notes are prominent but they are balanced well by stunning red fruit. The finish is not a powerful crescendo but rather a lovely long delicate one. Outstanding.

Volnay and its Environs (Domaine McClure Roberts): acid a little sharp on this, but a really nice developing flavor profile. black fruit, black pepper, some dried violet, caramel, and licorice tones. med(+) finish shows sharp acidity.

Wine continued to evolve and develop secondary flavors over three hours that it was open. Fragrant, red fruit on the nose with bright acidity and cranberry/cherry dominating flavors and developing earthy undertones. It serverd as good compliment to the duck breast in sweet\sour sauce.

Really enjoyed this bottle. Long, smooth finish with lively acidity.

Mature. Fragrant nose of dark fruit, slight cherry. Soft in the mouth and on the palate with an even finish. A fine effort.

Corked nose with some sous bois, dark cherry, cranberry underneath. Firm tannins but taste spoiled by the bottle being corked. After some long airing some of the underlying fruit came up, but just wasn't going to be that great a bottle. First Ampeau out four bottles that was corked, althugh the first 96 I have had.

Extravagant nose with strawberries, hay and barnyard from the first opening. Aromatics. Mild on the palate with tar and dirt. Improved over three to four hours but not much acidity. Very mellow. Brick color on the edges.

This was just released by the winemaker. The color shows some age, but it should have many years to develop. Many layered flavors with a nice balance and nose. A lovely, if uninspiring bottle.
