Dinner with Marius (Trier, Germany): Much more fruit driven aromatics than the Wittmann. A notch lighter than that wine, less strict, and a sweeter impression. Not as lingering. Marius thought it was over the hill; I just think it is looser, fully expressed, and not at the same quality rung.

Riesling and ripe Bordeaux (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): All wines in this flight were tasted blind. Popped and poured, not decanted. Different types of stemware used. Clear, pale golden yellow color. Clean, pronounced and absolute stunning nose: ripe citrus, some smoke, honeydew, passion fruit, later some ripe pineapple. Multi-layered and very complex. Keller? Or Halenberg? On the palate with a great tension and pressure. Smokiness, mixed with fine fruit, chalky mineral notes and some zesty bitterness. Juicy and complex. Also wonderfully balanced. Very long and juicy finish with lots of ripe fruit. Still young with upscale potential! 94-95+ Even though I had never felt this passionfruit before, I commit myself: Halenberg

From Mag. On the nose lots of ripe fruit (more on the yellow fruit side), nearly candied. Also a herbal component and a bit of honey. Blind I was in the Pfalz region. A bit atypical for a GG from the Nahe although I know, that 2007 is a warmer vintage. On the flipside the nose is very deep and multi layered. On the palate very round withouth the highest acidity which also was a hint for me to went for Pfalz blind. Soft edges and a noticeable sweetness. But also here you have the depth and the minerality in the background. A very young Halenberg which will need quite some more time in this bottle format. Lots of potential. 94+

An evening with wine geeks (@Private location, Frankfurt): Glass: Gabriel Gold From Magnum. Great, glowing golden yellow color. Clean pronounced and developing nose with some clear, ripe fruit, some candied fruits, herbs, honey. Very multi-layered and great. On the palate soft and round, dry with quite some residual sugar left, medium- acidity, very mineral, deep, a bit chubby, great balance and very looong. Still very young. 94-95

Riesling SWAG 2018 (Restaurant Vlet, Hamburg, Germany): Very nice to have the Frühlingsplätzchen and the Halenberg from the same vintage next to each other for a direct comparison. The Halenberg was the more harmonious, rounder wine of the two with some peach, exotic flavors but also some citric components and a touch of honey. The palate also showed round with a playful acidity and a long finish. A beautiful wine to drink but it not totally fulfilled my high expectations.

Riesling SWAG 2018 (Restaurant Vlet, Hamburg / Speicherstadt): What a beautiful flight to have these two vineyards side by side! Pale golden color. Clean, medium intense and rather warm nose with some honey, ripe yellow fruit and some crushed stones. On the palate very vibrant and energetic. Ripe yellow fruit, something “dirty”, crushed stones. Perfect balance, quite young. Beautiful lingering finish. 93+

Light yellow with a green shimmer --- Nose fresh, elegant, shy, sea breeze, mineral vapor, some citrus, some grassy notes --- Palate rich, fresh, vivid, nice acidity, minerals, dried apple, grapefruit, citrus notes --- Finishes pretty long on fruit and tart aspects, fruitiness shining through. This vine appears so young and vivid, overall nicely integrated, this is ageless.

"10 Years After" Riesling (Private Location): The Halenberg is one of my favorite dry Rieslings out of Germany and on this evening it absolutely showed its class. A very good vintage for the Schönleber estate. Long growing season with a late picking at the end of October, start of November. The soil here is blue slate and quartzite. Always very elegant and fine wines. In the nose yellow and white stone fruit, lots of herbs and wet stone. Wonderful interwoven, fine and super, super elegant. Lovely acidity on the palate. Still so lively and playing around with the fine fruit and this typical strong minerality. Very good tension and a long finish. For me the most "complete" wine of the tasting. I´m not sure if it has more potential for the coming years but imo its nearly perfect how it is right now. A truly wonderful wine.
10 years after Riesling tasting - 2007 (@Home): Glass: Riedel Sommelier Riesling Double decanted about 6h before serving. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing and very elegant, chiseled nose with lots of herbs, white stone fruit and wet stones. Lovely. Dry, medium and ripe acidity. Very open and present wine at its peak. Elegant and lean, lots of tension, medium+ intense flavors of white fruit, herbs, grapefruit, zests, all highlighted by wet stones. Certainly, one of the wines closest to its peak this evening. Will stay there for at least 5+ years. 94

Riesling SWAG 2017 (Restaurant Vlet, Hamburg / Speicherstadt): Clear, pale citrus golden color. Clean, muted nose. I guess, we should have given this wine more time to open up. Dry, very elegant and powerful. A textbook example of a dry Riesling. Fruit is in the back, you can taste the fine and elegant notes of the Halenberg with its saltiness and slate notes. Very structured and precise. One of the best dry wines usually, but unfortunately this evening it has to compete with the very best, therefore “only” 93pts. It has years of potential for further development, so no need to hurry.

From memory: Revisited after three years, and, while still pretty enjoyable, I must admit I preferred it in its relative youth. Maintains good balance, but both fruit and structure seem to be fading. There’s also a lot more petroleum on the nose than I seem to remember. A very soaked and brittle cork might however suggest a lack of representativeness – a wine like this shouldn't be on the decline after only nine years.

The Monzinger Halenberg is undoubtedly one of the very best Riesling sites within the whole of Germany, having an incline of up to 70 percent and with a soil that is mainly composed of blue slate and quartzite (which lays the foundation for the profound minerality of this great Riesling). And the Emrich-Schönleber winery is considered one of the leading estates in the Nahe region. This is a terrific “terroir Riesling”, light green-yellow in color with an excellent brightness to it and with an extremely intense and pure nose, plenty of minerals and ripe stone-fruit, dried herbs and some slightly smoky tones. Very concentrated and compact palate, dominated by succulent citrus fruit and with a brilliant structure that is supported by a ripe but racy acidity. Magnificent mineral aftertaste. Still young but already very tempting ; drink it now through 2015.
Indrukwekkende minerale afdronk. Nog jong, maar al bijzonder verleidelijk. Te drinken : nu tot 2015.
