This bottle was more evolved than the last one I tried. Quite oxidative at first with a barnyard funk that took about a half hour to blow off. Nose like before of honeycomb and cantaloupe, but this time a pronounced Granny Smith apple scent to balance it. Stronger minerality than I remember. This had a noticeable gold color to it. This was more fully evolved than the last one so on the basis of two bottles I would say drink up, but give this a little air time ( half hour?) to pull itself together. This just reinforces my love affair with this estate and this cuvée in particular. On the basis of both bottles I would say drink up, but still give it a little air before tasting. Score: 93. Relative to expectations : ++

Still in great shape, possibly in need of a few more years to bring out every note. Slight oxidative note. Beatiful nose of honeycomb, slight touch of cantaloupe. Really nice fresh cut flower note as well Palate was melon, honey, a little citrus, mild minerality. A little linear but gorgeous in its way. In no danger of falling apart. Score : 93. Last bottle. Looks like an aged Sauternes. This is big, rich, and viscous. Has a sweet, minerally nose. On the palate, the minerality is dominant in the mid palate. Honeyed stone fruits on the finish. There are hints of some oxidation here, but frankly less so than when I drank them younger.

Unctuous and full in texture, and with the classic waxy and honeyed aspects one would expect. But even after an hour open, the wine feels constricted. More time maybe. But it's hard to say. I fundamentally do not trust 14.5% and ripe like this one is, and this full and rich. It would be good to wait a number of years on the last bottle to see what unfolds.
A wild tasting ride! Opened yesterday, no decant, drank 1/2, then vac-u-vin and finished today. Deep gold, clear color. At first a really funky nose and the first half glass was not pleasant at all. In 30 min it started to open up, the funk blew off, and got quince, pear, melon, mineral and spice -- quite tasty. Good rich mouthfeel. The first glass on day 2 was probably the best! Paired well with black bass in soy sauce and ginger oil, plus root vegetables in tahini dressing.

Either this wine is heading downhill fast or, this was just a tired bottle. Extremely dusty on the nose but not giving much else. Dark golden in color, this wine has performed much better in the past.

If you drink it at the right temperature cellar temp or a few minutes in the fridge the 14.8% abv stays hidden. It's a golden yellow color, some richness, extract and glycerol in the mouth with the alcohol, still some decent acidity, citrus nose with a bit of lanolin and honey. Actually was a decent match with a beet, orange and toasted pecan salad. Also worked well with pan seared scallops. These big dry chenins go through a funky adolescence and despite the gold color I did not think this bottle was oxidized.

Pulled a bottle to open after reading through the notes that preceed this one - I had to see what was going on. The wine is slight golden as if it were oxidized, but the nose and palate don't suggest that. The nose is slate and mineral with a touch of lychee (not kidding) and a honey aroma. The palate is medium bodied with a slight medicinal tinge on the entry that unfolds to white fruits that linger for a long time. Good balance. It is like lesser version of Coulee de Serrant but that makes it enjoyable as the Joly wine can be over the top (and oxidized).

Lovely golden color. Doesn't give much on the nose, just a bit of lanolin and minerals. Not much on the front palate. Midway you get some nuttiness and honeyed fruit along with some mineraliness. I like the finish on the wine the best. The rest is kind of meh. Anyway 3 more to go. 14.8% abv.

This is an excellent bottle of Chenin Blanc. Its seems a little bit sweeter than the Chidaine I had last night, but that may be due to its greater textural richness. Aromatically it's a stunner with all the waxy, woolly, warm fruit you can stuff into one bottle. I am very impressed at hte way the aromatics penetrate from the palate, and the finish is noticeably long. It's developing some aged character already, so I am glad I opened it now, but boy is it ever good.

Not sure what to say here....this is a wine I have really liked/loved in prior vintages....this was fine on entry with fruit and acidity but the finish to me was possibly corked but I could not get anyone to decide and so I either did not like the finish and found it short and impure or it was corked.....we will see with further bottles

Great showing for this wine. One of the more complex whites I've tasted. Delightfully pleasant. Medium-full bodied. Slightly buttery, good minerality, stone fruits (white peach, apricot), some nuttiness on the finish. Not too tart, not too sweet. Well rounded feel in the mouth. Wish I had more. At $28, well worth it.

This wine was opened and poured. This did now show as anticipated. The wine is either in an awkward stage or not aging well. The bouquet is monolithic and forward. It lacks focus, nuance and complexity. The color is a medium yellow that suggests an older wine. The medium bodied palate continues the them of the bouquet. This drank very well on release and unfortunately the youthful attributes of this wine receded leaving the wine monolithic and hinting at not aging as gracefully as expected.

First meeting with a chenin from Savennières. Label suggests one hour aeriation and consumption at 8-10C. Almost deep orange-gold colour in the pitcher, becomes lighter in the glass. Thick and oily. Well integrated oak in its aroma, with apricots, flowers and honey. The sip is creamy, some honey and residual sugar are both there, fresh acid, apple, citrus, minerality and long finish. After swallowing, an elegant bitterness is on the palate, similar to quinine in tonic, but eventually it fits well. This is a very well integrated wine with a good value to price. Do not drink it at 8-10C as the label says, opens up at room temprature. Fits seafood.

Has very good presence now but needs time to gain in complexity. By night two this dry wine sounds a richly honeyed bass note on the nose, while delicate flowers and minerals sing at a high register. On the palate this is creamy and mouthfilling, with rich pear and honeydew fruit (that some will interpret as sweet), almond, and nascent suggestions of ginger spice and wet rock. This could use a bit more acidity but nonetheless will evolve into a very, very good wine.

I used a cup of this to make some risotto & then proceeded to drink the rest with the food. There's a richness of texture in this wine, and it alternately gives suggestions of fruit and suggestions of minerals. There's also a touch of cigar ash which is something I have run across in other 2004s from France. I like it now, as the fruit is fresh and the texture alluring, but I think I will drink up, as the cigar ash note is worrisome.

Very nice surprise. This wine has a dark golden color and body of a sauterne without all the sweetness. Floral aromas accent peachy, apricot, and butterscotch flavors, some nuttyness on a full bodied finish. What I liked the most about this wine is it has some complexity and body to it, so it was almost like a drinking a red.

We have enjoyed about 8 bottles of this wine over the past two years, with consistent strong ratings. This bottle was off. Tapas Dinner with Cindy Sterling: Dinner with Cindy, Jen and Tash ... and lots of harmonizing seafood tapas. Some interesting fruit flavors ... but young. We did this next to a 2001 Alsace riesling ... and this wine showed less complex. Better with age and with food. Best pairings with our crab and roasted red pepper dip, with oysters and with octopus. Also good with grilled asparagus and tomato tapenade. Not as good with our grilled Japanese sea bass. (I had tilapia, but didn't make it). Still a great wine ... better with a year or 2 of bottle age.

Tasted blind - deep dark straw, great clarity. Nose shows some chenin typicity - honey, wax, flowers, pear. This smells a little more exotic than I would expect - smells like it is from a hotter terrior. On the palate, clearly dry but a little flabby - would expect this to have a little more supporting acid. This is my first closel papillon, and I did not like it nearly as much as the baumard examples I have had.

I have never tasted a wine with so many different fruit flavors. Like a blend of condrieu, german mosel, and california chardonnay, but it all works and then ends with this really nice dry finish. My dinner quest who loves sauvignon blanc hated the wine. Obviously! However, I'm note sure why everyone is rating this wine in the 90's.

Amazing! Mybe better than the 2002. Lighter in body and drier, somewhat reserved aromas of stones, citrus, and melon.

Once I adjusted my palate from its slavish need for oaky chard, I really liked this. Quite full bodied with nice restrained tropical fruit, some refreshing acidity and a nice finish.

Dusty aromas of dried leaves and grass, with a bit of peach lurking in the background. Simple lemon-lime flavors on the palate. Toasty finish. 86-87 points.

Ann really likes this and says there is a really strong botanical flavor that she can't quite identify -- maybe lemongrass. It is good, somewhat full body, mostly dry, but peppery and balanced. Maybe a little bitter on the finish. But on the whole a big thumbs up.

Excellent wine - balanced with flavors of melons and stone fruits, and lots of minerality. This wine should age beautifully.

Lovely golden hue...faint citrus nose... complex well-integrated citrus, pear, melon flavors with spice and mineral layers...full mouth-feel. Very pleasant dry white wine. Enjoyed with talapia with spicy mango salsa.

Dry white, that is minerally with apple, citrus, and honey flavors. Interesting and good, but seems like it needs some age to really come into its own.

Amazing! Mybe better than the 2002. Lighter in body and drier, somewhat reserved aromas of stones, citrus, and melon. Clear and well delineated apple, melon, wet stones, and hints of vanilla and tropical fruit flavors with lime on the finish. This wine is just brilliant. Pairs well with grilled spanish mackerel too.
