Upon opening there is a big blast aroma of blueberry and roasted meat, which quickly disipates but is still present after a few hours. Very aromatic. Taste is more muted, fruit is on the downslope but still very good. Blackberry, pepper, roasted meat, clove and sandalwood with nice balancing acidity. Paired well with grilled lamb chops. Drink soon if you want fruit. Savory elements and acidity should bode well for several more years.

Nervy acidity, a midpalate of tar, earth, and just a bit of juice. Acid comes around again at the end to define the finish. This wine is well structured, engaging, and generally youthful -- the somewhat reticent fruit is the only indicator of its age. This could go for years.

This is either in a dumb phase, or has peaked and is on its way down. Tannins have integrated nicely but seem to have taken most of the flavor with them. This could turn a corner and turn into a magnificent, savory drink, but why risk it? It's tasty now.

Purchased upon release and kept in proper cellar. This bottle had a lovely nose of smoked meat, dark fruit, and some dried herbs. However, the finish was thin and not very impressive. I'm thinking this one is racing down on a Black Diamond run.

Not your typical Cali syrah at all. Restrained fruit, crushed rocks and mineral, low(er) alcohol, acidic. Delicious. Still quite tannic after some air (especially on day 2 after being in the fridge) and mouth-staining purple, still need a few years.

Savory. Not austere, but a little too cool for school overall. Complex smoke is nice. I preferred the extra fruit of youth. Parker might be right about the aging curve. My least favorite of a recent run through some 06 Pax, but still a very tasty and interesting wine.

Really green. Green tobacco, green olives, green stemmy... At one point, it started to take on an olive loaf-like flavor, but it was short lived. That was the only bit of meatiness here. After that, it was back to the green... I'm afraid that I also opened this one too early. But, it will always probably be leaner than I would like it to be...

Nice deep ruby to garnet red, semi-transparent. Just a little gamey funk on the nose with some cherry notes, not quite french profile, but has some character beyond the typical California Syrah. Very nice cherry and red berry notes, maybe some pomagranite. There is a tart factor, but it is not a detractor. It offers a nice mix to cut food. We combined with a Mac n cheese dish with ham, and all paired quite well. 91/92 pts. This is a very well made, and well-balanced wine.

I haven't tried a lot of cool climate Syrah, but if it all tastes like this count me in! Very different from most Pax offerings, but in a good way. Quite a bit leaner, no sweetness or meatiness that I get from most Pax wines. For the $30 closeout price, this is one of the best QPRs I have ever had.

Pepper, pumice, blueberry, currant, incense, and iron flow off the nose. The palate has all of those elements in a high-toned package, along with a fruitier opening phase, but ultimately feels overburdened by the stems, leaving a one-dimensional impression (although that is one very tasty and interesting dimension). Here on day 2 -- after a 3 hour decant yesterday -- this glass is getting better and better, adding some charred meat and floral notes as well as a slightly more overt blue fruit core. Still a bit stemmy. I really have no idea how this will perform in the future, but I do know that Parker's rating is idiotic in the here and now.

Evolving into a rounder wine. The edges are softening up. My favorite 2006 American Syrah so far. The 2006 Cayuse Cailloux had a little more pronounced nose but was bordering on too rich and a little jammy at times. The Pax has very good aromatics and shows more restraint than the Cayuse. It's more of a cross between new and old world having the best of both.

This is what I thought the 2003 E. Guigal Hermitage was going to be like. Not even that close. This had everything the Guigal had but much more seductive in the nose. Had with a bacon, ham and mushroom pizza and it mimicked the aromas almost to a Tee. Opaque and concentrated but with great finesse and some good drying tannins at the end. Everything the Guigal had but much better.
Much more complex than the 2006 Pax Obsidian Syrah. The Obsidian is from a warmer sight and is ripe round and deep but just not as interesting in smell, flavor and texture.

Very Nice nose but the fruit is MIA this time. Not sure what to think. Thinner than previous tasting and mouth drying tannins.?. Peppery and a little greenness. Less plush than before and a little astringent. I'm thinking this is a bad bottle. Very different than the other 2 I've had. Might be due to me serving this at a fairly cool temperature. 90Pts.
Decanted overnight. Recovered much better. Still a little thinner than I remember. Balanced much more now. More elegant. The nose is very aromatic and peppery and a little green. I like a more subtle style of Syrah. Especially with the california ones. This is really different than the other Pax Syrah's that I've had on that front. Not sure why this bottle feels less concentrated and sweet than previous bottles. I'll have to agree with Pax that it is a little paradigm shifting for this producer. Which is okay by me. 92+Pts.
I would taste this at closer to room temperature next time to bring out the fruit.
