Dark reddish-purple garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of cedar & earthy/dusty notes, cocoa, herbal notes of mint, pepper, tobacco, leather, minerals, spices & a hint of vanilla/oak in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs, minerals, cocoa, spices & a hint of vanilla/oak in the background. Lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 16 years old, it is close to or at its peak so no further development should be expected. However, it should hold onto its current peak for a few more years if cellared properly.

Excellent tannins and structure, even at this age. Fruit was a little buried in it, though, and under the oak. Still, completely enjoyable with a weekday meal. Blessings on blessings.

Tasted from a well-cellared bottle, this wine retains a youthful deep ruby/red appearance. Decanted off of its sediment and serially tasted over 2-3 hours, it develops an attractive bouquet of black currant fruit, accented by Asian spices and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with good acidity, it delivers flavors mirroring the nose. The tannins are largely resolved at this point, resulting in a soft-textured wine that has fairly good mid-palate presence and a medium-length finish. Assuming that one's bottle has been cellared appropriately, this wine should provide pleasure through the remainder of this decade. That said, it is lacking the "wow" factor that would be necessary for an outstanding rating. Drink now-2020.
After 10 years it still had adequate fruit but even after a 1 hour decant the bite wouldn't let go. By day 2 it was acid and stewed pruins. This wine was not built for age.

My last auction bottle at $32 with the highest fill, low neck, less bin dirt than the other two bottles, drink all three bottles almost immediately when received because storage was probably mediocre based on fill and bin damage to the labels. Nose of dark cherry fruit, cassis, and plum, perfume from an Opus X Lost City cigar, more of the same on the palate, the best of the three, medium/big body, delicious, mouth filling cabernet taste which brings back tasting at Duckhorn Vineyards on a hot summer day seated on the patio, medium/big body, savored and enjoyed with frilled turkey burgers, lovely, long finish.

I think this wine is near or at its peak. Integrated tannins lead to traditional Napa Cab flavors of cassis, lead pencl, leather and some smoke. The fruit is really shining through and it's perfectly drinkable now. Excellent!

Inky, aubergine appearance. Full bodied and youthful, offering black fruit, creme de cassis, mocha, pencil lead, and a kick of spice on the nose. On the palate firm tannins and an underlying tartness frame its black fruit core, followed by notes of black coffee, crushed rocks, and a spicy aftertaste that lingers. The oak influence is apparent but subsides as the aromas and flavors mull together, enabling the wine to display its secondary and tertiary elements. This is structured and balanced, though it wasn't as polished as I expected so it may need more time.

I've come to expect better from Duckhorn, and this certinaly didn't measure up to the price tag. Maybe it's the vintage, because others have been better. Maybe the case this one was in got a rough ride from California. But it was just very closed. Thought it might open up on Day 2, but nope. It was just an OK few glasses of Cab, and not was I was expecting after 3 years in the cellar (and I'm not really sure that more time would make it better). I have the next two vintages of this so certainly hope for better when I crack the next one.

This is in a lovely and harmonious place. The fruit is pure and clean with cassis, blackberry, sweet cream and cedar notes, all supported by good acid and fine-grained tannins. There's an architectural structure to this wine that braces and supports everything, but in a very flowing way. The best bottle to date of this wine. Needs to breathe for full enjoyment.

Great dark Cabernet color on this wine with a bright ruby red rim, with a very fruit packed nose. Great aromas of dark fruits, plums, cassis, cigar, spices, vanilla cream, and a touch of mint on the end. On he palate the wine gushes with dark fruit flavors on the attack, with a very dense mid-palate filled with dark chocolate, and coffee flavors. For those looking for big lush fruit, this won't be your wine. Happily DV still seems focused on making age-worthy wine--good tannins and acidity, supporting layered earth, spice and fruit (more dry than sweet). Aging well. Still needs more time.

This has been in my Cellar for a number of years. Duckhorn was one of the wines that turned me into a wine lover and collector back in 1999 in SanFran-- wow! What an experience. This time around, it was a very good complement to a parpiadella with homemade bolanase sauce. Nice oaky vanilla fragrance, with a deep, ruby color. Very mild tannins and a nice sweetness to the bouquet and mouth. This wine is at it's peak. Drink it if you have it.

Had tasted a flight of the Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon while at a wine bar and thought I'd give this a try. Nice oaky/vanilla nose with good red & black fruit. But taste, not so good. Very cheap red & black fruit flavors with full spice, very dominant oakiness & alcoholic heat. Expected it to mellow and open up more with decanting, not so after 1 1/2 hrs. Remained very simple, showed no layering or complexity at all. Tasted like a bunch of purchased fruit or fermented wine that was blended together. At nearly $70 (with tax) for a price tag . . I'd say the owners are taking advantage of their previous success by offering a very simple (& not that good) table quality wine at an exhorbitant price. Much better alternatives out there!!

Restaurant pour ... A very solid Cali Cab that meets all your Napa Valley expectations. Definitely not on par with a cult bottling, but very strong, with chewy tannins, rich, deep flavor and some welcome earthiness. Clearly, a very well-made wine. Tannins are there, but not in your face, and the entire offering sings with food.

Every time I pop and pour one of these, I kick myself for not opening it several hours beforehand. Duckhorn always needs a little air. At first blush this wine was a little dry and edgy, but later in the night, and the next day, it was really good. the tannins softened, nice layered Napa cassis and blackberry fruit emerged and it just sort of game together in this pleasing, whole. DV doesn't do fruit bombs, but they do do structure and sophistication.

This was absolutely amazing. I didn't expect this to be this good. Having tried a wide number of '06 Cabs from this area including Chappellet, Chimney Rock, Whitehall Lane and even Caymus etc. this one was head and shoulders above them all - really quite amazing stuff. I've had previous vintages of this and none was as good. This is so deep, pentrating and powerful but yet not a hard edge to be found - there's frankly nothing to improve upon. It's so complete.

This wine was much more approachable than the last. Much more upfront fruit, more resolved tannins and a little less dry. Still very youthful DV, but with glimpse of where this young wine probably is heading.

Like most DV wines this is somewhat dry and tannic. The fruit is there, but it needs a little time and coaxing. Drank with wild mushrrom risotto, brought out some nice earthy notes and some darker fruit (dark plum, currant). Still a bit awkward and unsure of itself. A bit like a pretty girl who doesn't know she's pretty. Definitely got better after being opened a bit. Hold off on opening other bottles. DV certainly has its own style. Not for the fruit-bomb set--more old school Cali.
"Reserve" wines (Toulouse Restaurant, Atlanta): Nose says, "Hey, I'm a big Napa Cab! Look at me! Drink me! Show me off!". Blackcurrant and red fruit, juicy, plump, velvety on the palate and finish. Ho hum. Next...

A bit disjointed at this point, this is showing lots and lots of oak with primary red cherry aromas creeping around the edges of vanilla, toast and charred wood notes. Velvet textured on the attack, this gains depth and complexity on the palate where cassis and blackberry flavors emerge, suggesting this might need some cellar time to integrate. On the other hand, I don't know if any wine can integrate THIS much oak.

Smells like lying on a bear-skin rug by a roaring fire with a naked woman. This is a sexy, masculine wine. Tastes like beef jerky, or a feast of game at a mountain resort in Colorado Springs. Nothing wimpy about this classic Napa Cab.

London Wine Fair (London): Oaky and oily fruit - rich with notes of plums and chocolate. Nice enough if a little generic. I could imagine quaffing this quite easily at a bbq.

Danny and Anita shared it with us at Hiro 88. It was everyone's first time trying it. We all loved it. Said it cost $47.

Would have hoped for a more intense nose. Some red fruits. Not much specificity, but solid.
