A spicy, red fruit nose. A bit grumpy to start, but unfurled over the course of a couple hours. Not amazing, but very nice. Purchased at Caves Madeleine (Beaune) in 2012.

This was not up what could be expected of this bottle, I got this at an auction and I guess this bottle was not properly stored. The nose was very developed, basically only tertiary aroma’s; on the first day mainly forest floor, leather, dried cherries. On day 2 more licorice, pipe tobacco and some red fruit. Medium acidity, low tannins, medium finish

Dark translucent ruby color. Fresh nose of intense red and dark berry, heady violets, iodine, and sea air. Layers of buoyant iron-inflected dark berry fruit cut with black cherry, fine soil, and anchoring stone on the palate. Crystal clear detail and disarming freshness, with surprising depth and concentration. Bright acidity and filed off tannin. Long finish of almost crunchy red fruit, subtle iron, briar, and granular dirt. We’ve been fortunate enough to sample this wine 6 times, this latest showing the best yet. An absolute delight.

Not in a braggadocios way, but somehow I’ve drunk an awful lot of this vintage and Cru from Lafon. And while not destined to be “great,” I’d be hard pressed to name a wine that’s provided more joy. And I could list a bunch of reasons you should buy this wine if it pops up, but really, I’d prefer you forget this benediction and leave the consumption to me.

The 2007 rendition begins a bit closed but within 30 mins opens nicely. Deeply pitched dark fruits, leather, mushroom and earth and tea. Maybe a little simple and thin compared to other vintages, not a surprise I suppose, but completely in its wheelhouse and enjoyable as ever.

02/07/09 vertical. 2007 shows satiny, bright, juicy cherry with lots of energy. Medium concentration as such there is more space for the florals to shine on the mid palate. Complete and at peak. Not as grand as the 2002 or 2009, yet delightful in its own way.

Comtes Lafon Dinner - Blanc et Rouge (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL): In 02/07/09 vertical. Prototypically Volnay with lots of red cherry, spice and floral notes. Very charming and pretty, with good weight and length, just not nearly the concentration of either the 2002 or the 2009.

2007 Burgs, round 1 (Noize): The most stereotypically 2007 wine tonight, and probably identifiable as the only CdB red too. Quite rich on the nose and a sense of straightforward, supple, juicy fruitiness. Almost too smooth, but plenty of drinking window remaining.

Quite dark on the nose with black cherries, anise, raspberries, and a hint of cola. Medium+ acidity, good structure, and flavors of tart cherries, red berries, and green herbs on the palate. Good finish. Overall, a very good wine, although the nose needed quite some time to come through and there is an astringent component on the palate that I didn’t appreciate.

Popped and poured. Right out of the bottle it had that Cola note and dark fruit that I associated with Northern Cali Pinots. Very round. After an hour it started to open up and stretch it's legs. Nice acid, minerality. Still a lot going on and very dense. Kept in the fridge overnight. Day 2 much more open after warming up and showed all the class and balance I was expecting. This is a baby. 5-10 years would be no problem to sit on the others. Surprising that this is showing so well and so young. The Comtes Lafon reds are a really good buy at the price given how expensive the whites are. Really nice wine and a great example of southern Volnay wines.

Most of the '07's are drinkin' fine now. But this needs lots of air. nose with ripe strawberry but also some unripe tones which are not unpleasant. It softens out with air and become more smooth. It has a voluptuous palate, nice fruit and enough freshness. Give it some more time.

Healthy deep red color. Medium weight, excellent depth and intensity of black cherry fruit, but the finish is dominated by astringent, resiny oak. Burgundy should not taste like modern Rioja.

Outstanding silky and multilayered nose, with sweet black currant, violets, and licorice. Elegant and very fine, this is a totally charming bouquet.
Balance is a bit off still, fresh and vivacious on the palate, with a gripping fine tannin that tickles my tongue. It will like round off in a few years, I’m certain.

Pretty wine with good balance. Pleasant and nuanced flavors of blackberry, underbrush, and wet earth. But less lively than I would hope. Am I crazy for thinking that a $25 cru Beaujolais I drank recently is the clearly better wine?
Notes much the same as the last bottle.... I still think this needs another 3-5. Big and bold for the year. Very enjoyable but not in its full potential right now.

Aired in the glass for an hour then followed for three more. Deep, dark ruby. Beautiful nose of insistent raspberry and black plum fruit with billows of cool rose petal floral scents, pine forest, earth, and acrid notes of iodine. Lush, unbridled layers of brambly mulberry, red raspberry, and black cherry fruit on the palate propelled by copious acidity and youthful tannin. Waves of brisk red fruit on the lengthy finish complicated by iron filings, earth, and slightly dusty grip. Full of adolescent energy and pop, a real delight tonight.

Role Reversal Lunch at La Paulée-Dujac Whites (Monts-Luisants) and Lafon Reds (Quince, San Francisco): Magnum. Deepest color of the set of 2007's. Very complex aromas-cranberry, florality, fennel, clove, and the barest char. Not as overtly fruity as the other two, but serious and greater depth. Blacker tinged fruit in the mouth, some blueberry, attractive spiciness, and that citrus top note again. Long, tannic finish. This is the one wine that begged for more time in bottle. Fantastic Volnay.

PnP. Medium dark red. Sauvage nose of spice and iron - more Gevrey than Volnay, though Lafon always makes a huge wine from this vineyard. Initially quite tight on the palate though with intense flavors; as for the previous bottle this does smooth out with air, although this bottle is not as fine as the previous. Long intense finish.

PnP. Perfect cork. Medium dark red; slight clearing at the rim. Mineral, spice, dark fruits on the nose, but this is more earthy than anything else. On the palate, for a Volnay this is a heavyweight, although not ponderous, excellent fruit: earth balance and a long finish. Clearly will age further although close to maturity. After an hour or so this really blossoms into a wonderful wine; smooth, lovely fruit, with the earth tones playing a counterbalance. At peak with an hour of air.

I last had this almost 4 years ago, and while it had many of the same elements, these had come together in a wonderful and unexpected way. Translucent ruby, evenly colored. As before, it started with intense rose florality, which gradually gave way to tart cherry and strong anise. Slightly heavier and oakier than my ideal for Volnay, but these traits also backed down with air and revealed an airier wine not so affected by the wood. Pungent red fruit, sharp but not terribly high acidity, and a fine thread of minerality and soil that were less obvious in 2010. I've had mixed emotions about this bottling over many vintages, but in the end, I must say that this was one of the most gorgeous examples I've tried. No, it does not have the pared down purity of Angerville, but at this point, this is quite an exciting Volnay. Maybe for this cuvee, less is more, and 2007 is the right vintage for the style.
The next day, the remainder of the bottle showed even rounder fruit with some bitter chocolate notes. This is a strikingly voluminous, rich 2007.
Slightly floral and spice-driven start with red cherry aromas. A bit of underbrush also coming through aromatically when open for a few hours. Red cherry flavors and strawberry hints with modest spice, everything in good balance, just moderate density and nuance. I think this might have some limited upside potential going forward, but isn't a wine to cellar long-term.

Had to try this in the new Zalto glasses. Dark ruby. Two hours after opening, the nose was a garden of fresh florals with briary notes and deep black raspberry scents mixed in. Sharp, stony black plum and cherry fruit precision-cut on the palate with earth and mineral undergirding each taste. Driving acidity and lots of stern tannins still submerged beneath the fruit. Echoes of vivacious fresh raspberry, brambles, and iron on the long, lovely finish. So much going on in this bottle, which has many years of development yet.

Purchased recently after I believe a re-release from the domaine: the bottle had a pristine label and some sort of security tape fastened to the capsule. Popped and poured. Color was a darker ruby. Nose was full and musky with licorice, blackberry, and anise scents. Very primary on the palate with almost spritzy acidity, showing forth big doses of dense black raspberry and bing cherry fruit mixed with earth and iron. Young tannins buried beneath primary fruit. Powerful wine with an elegant satin texture nonetheless. Long, ringing finish of purple-berried, stony fruit. Zingy, exuberant showing and great fun to drink.

From the wine list at Caveau Des Arches, Beaune. Popped and poured. Very dark ruby. Nose and palate quite mute at first but after an hour began to open up. Nose eventually quite full, releasing scents of iodine, blackberry, lavender, raspberry, stones. Masculine quality on the palate with powerful flavors of blackberry, raspberry, anise, and earth, yet the elegance of Volnay still came through. Ample acidity, stern tannins, long and resonating finish of dark fruit and minerals. Superb.

Started a little closed but after an hour gorgeous black and red Pinot aromas with floral edges emerged. Palate is classically proportioned with fine silky tannins and a fresh line of acidity driving the very long finish. In 2-3 years this will be very beautiful indeed...
A Few 2007 Volnays (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Medium ruby. Floral fragrance to this one. This is the biggest of all 4 wines tasted with an obviously oaky base. Relatively simple cherry fruit, looser, less soil-infused, and more diffuse than the Montille or Pousse d'Or wines. In short, less Volnay character than the others, and its size does not impress but makes it seem clumsy next to the others.

Selection Becky Wasserman Tasting (Tribeca Grill - New York, NY): Tasting, brief note. Tough wine to assess. Good start that is floral and slightly perfumed with forward red fruit. Palate also showed ripe red cherry and raspberry but came across as thinner than I 'd expect and somewhat lean. Spice emerged on finish.
