This was the best champagne I’ve had in a while. It was drinking very well and still had lots of life (5+ years). The wine was fruity and dry with clear tart roasted apple. Amazingly it was also very smooth and fresh with all the complexity. I wish I had more.

Toasty and nutty aromas on the nose. Medium bodied, dry, savory and complex, showing nutty notes, some toffee and toast and a bit of citrus with decent mousse. Simply delicious. One of the best vintage champagnes I've tasted during recent years.

We visited Alfred Gratien several years ago. The winemaker (Nicholas) is great fun, loves to make wine in a "gourmand" style and opened several bottles for our sipping pleasure. Suffice it to say, we wobbled to our hotel, which was fortunately only a 15 minute stumble.
This is not the 1996 statuesque bubble, but certainly a spectacular wine with excellent balance of acidity, fruit and alcohol. Fairly transparent green apple on the eye served properly in white Burgundy glasses. Aromas of toasted almonds and yeasty vanilla cream. Simply yummy and screaming "sip me, baby, sip me!" Smooth, creamy vanilla on the palate and dry as a baby's bum. Lingering finish that almost convinced us to open another bottle!!! Awesomesauce!! A winner!!! The song "I am hot for teacher" is playing as we sip...we missed a lot of education in champagne in our day, but not our homework is soo delightful that we are "hot" for this luvly! Great QPR!

Took about two hours to fully materialize. Medium straw color with a very fine and persistent bead. Toasty glazed pecans, papaya, lemons, and a little buttermilk biscuit make up the bouquet. A generous mouthfeel with a complex mixture of flavor and plenty of verve and acidic grip leading into a blissful finish. Some of the yeast and nutty notes linger for a good long time and, in my opinion, this is nowhere close to the cliff's edge - drink or hold. 4+13+18+8= 93

Still consistent with my previous notes. Mousse seems to be fading somewhat, drink now and in next couple of years. Fairly biscuity (not as much as I like with age though), but a mouth puckering acidity with too much time in the glass. Serve in traditional champagne flutes. Currently a perfect match for sushi. Love Gratien, and it used to be cracking value, but personally feel it drinks better with 12-15yrs age and no longer. The 1999 is richer but shorter lived than the 1998. Now the price is creaping up, I've stopped buying Gratien - used to be my house pinot-styled champagne.

New Years Eve Celebration (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose offers pear, apple, yeast, bright minerality, and a bit of floral quality. The palate is just slightly oxidative, medium body, fairly lithe, nice acid, creamy mousse, green orchard fruit, bigger mineral component. More fresh and elegant than the '98 Veuve Clicquot.

on the nose, we have biscuits, gunpowder, pretty easy and shy to begin with but when the wine is left to stand for a little while then the citrus shows. wine has fine bubbles and feel young. acid is high.
taste is deliciously good, again very easy in style, especially as I thought it was pinot dominterad. terrible good wine that needs more time only ruskigt bra vin som behöver mer tid bara

Reached its peak about an hour after opening and held up well for about 6 hours. Light to medium straw color, slow and gentle mousse. Cashew butter, sourdough, brioche, peanut shell, and brine scents. Bouquet is consistent on the palate. Deep, mature flavors have a slight command over the structure but there is enough to carry it through another few years of development. Glad to have one more. 4+11+18+8= 91

Excellent mature champagne done in a very rich style. Loads of toast, bread dough, lemon juice, honeydew, and hints of almond extract and coffee bean on the nose. Palate is very rounds and plesantly sweet, though not too sweet for my tastes. Palate still refreshes and finish us long built on lemon rind and coffee bean. Beautiful, rich, mature, and harmonious.

A little clunky and dense and surprisingly dominated by Pinot notes despite that this is a 50/50 blend I believe -- drinks more like 80/20. Very youthful, small tight bubbles. Young Pinot fruit meets brioche. Very young for a '99. Enjoyable -- needs to lean out a bit and get a little more focus.

Blind Champagne and sparkling wines at Matt and Ori's (The new Pink Dolphin): Smells juicy and delicious. The palate is big and very much to my liking. Outstanding! Light golden color with medium-small bubbles. Sweet yeasty apple aromas still showing relative youth. Medium-full bodied rich mouthfeel with fresh apple and light toasty spice flavors. Medium-long finish. Definite improvement from over two years ago. Purchased at Alfred Gratien in Epernay – I wish their vintage wines were easier to find in the U.S. markets. Excellent – but still with room for further development. Ready to drink now, or anytime over the next five years.

Masters of Wine Champagne Tasting (San Francisco, CA): Beautiful. Light golden color, moderately sized bubbles. Typical Alfred Gratien in many senses – though the oakiness is subtler. Apple and toast nose. Green apple, oak, and spice on the palate. Medium length finish. Quite young – I will probably wait at least three years to open my one bottle of this Champagne. Right now, I actually prefer the Alfred Gratien’s N.V. Brut at nearly half the cost. Nonetheless, an excellent Champagne which I expect will continue to develop beautifully.
