Masterclass with Melanie Tarlant, vertical tasting of all currently released La Vigne d’Antan vintages. Wine #4/5. Made from ungrafted Chardonnay vines, planted in 1962. Disgorged in July 2010. Medium golden colour. Aroma of honey, ripe and dry apples, white peach, yeast, acacia, lime. Palate of zero dosage, seems slightly short in energy comparing ti other vintages. Earthy and chalky mineral notes along zesty citrusy flavours, spicy mousse, concludes with pleasant bitterness.

Lighter, highly reflective gold. Iced cake on the nose with a bit of aquarium bowl as a secondary scent. Almost no bubbles visible in the glass, but quite effervescent in the mouth. Notes of lemon bubble gum with strong minerals.

100% Chard from ungrafted vines. This is a serious, delicious drink, with plenty of baked apple on nose and linear on palate, tasty with laser focus acidity and showing some minerality. Perfect for seafood or heavy dishes, makes you go back for more. Tastes young for a 2000.

Champagne: Da vigne a piede franco prefillossera su terreni sabbiosi.

Fine perlage that comes up slowly. It shows very intense brioche and green apples on the nose, they emerge each time it sits in the glass in every couple of seconds. It has great intensity of sumptuous fruits without losing its class and delicacy. It is still very young with a slightly tight structure, but it will surely improve in 1-2 years time in bottle and can age for at least a decade.

Fresh apple and hints of brioche. Lithe and cut and penetrating. This is still very youthful and surprisingly tighter and less giving than previous bottles. Looks like a long ager with a good potential.

Blanc de Blancs Champagne Blind tasting (My Home): Disgorged March 1st 2010 from ungrafted Chardonnay. Great elegant nose, mineral and toasty. Floral with lemon and white peach. It is everything you want in a bubbly. Everything seems to come together and in balance. Rich and focused at the same time.

Vel overstått barneselskap. Litt overraskende lukt, tang og eple. Deilig til Balsfjord-ost, veldig -nesten for- frisk. 1 dag i flaske: Skikkelig sjø-mineraler. Som å drikke Ausepøylå (saltvann) når den var frisk.

This was wonderful. Great precision, complexity, focus and viscosity. Showing brioche, a touch of marzipan, boiled chestnuts, honeysuckle, Meyer lemon curd, key lime, apples, pears, perfectly ripe stone fruits, limestone and the slightest hint of raspberries. Became more and more textural as it opened up and warmed in the glass. Stunning aromatics, acidity and autolytic creaminess.

Another nice showing of this wine that seems to show more richness than the previous vintage(s) at a similar age; this already has some sumptuous butterscotchy flavors enriching the otherwise bright and racy fruit.

Excellent bottle, serious wine lying behind the bubbly part. Color of a honey gold, nose is crisp and fresh but with some complexity and secondary characters. Mouth is filling, rich and complex but perfectly balanced with superb acidity. Real Chardonnay, opulent and classy. A slight bitterish note in the mid-palate (less than absolutely optimal sanitary state of the fruit?). Long finish, great stuff. Not sure it will gain more by ageing?

This is a very interesting wine...... Very deep wine with citrus, hazelnuts, and a creamy yeast note Palate has similar depth......great lime and lemon with hazelnut, autolysis, subtle mandarin and a svelte texture....the defining aspect of the palate though is the laser precise acid. Finish is really quite long and complex I'll wait another 3 years to try my next one and see where it is....strikes me as having lots of life

Info on the wine: Ungrafted single vineyard of Chardonnay, 0,4ha Les Sables vineyard 50 years old. Fermented in oak (new to 25 years old), no malolactic, dosage of 2 grams
Info on the vintage: Major problems with rot due double rain than normal in September, not declared from many houses
Deep golden color, round nose, lemon pie, sweet nose, ripe fruits. Good mouth with angles, fresh, some oak, long aftertaste with a killer acidity. Before dinner

Vintage Champagne Masterclass (Landmark Hotel. London, U.K.): Round nose of marzipan, red apple, orange rind. Quite exotic. The palate is dry. Liberal oak here, this has a mix of new oak and wood as old as 25 years. That gives vanilla pod and caramel to the rich round body of this wine. That being said this has huge, just massive acidity that keeps this wonderfully balanced. Very dry but very pure white concentrated fruits. Long mineral rich finish. This was my favorite wine of the morning, beating out some big players. Pure finesse.
* little tidbit, this wine comes from a single vineyard "Les Sables" of ungrafted chardonnay.

Great stuff. Deeper in flavor, fuller, and even more viscous than the 1998/99 blend was at the same age, but still nice and nimble. Nice aromatics too, everything you want in a bubbly.
