Burgundies at Chiu Tang: The previous taster managed to nail this as Chablis right off the bat which was very impressive. My favourite of the night probably because it's hard to catch Burgundies at their peak and this was a great wine at its apogee despite the dark colour. The sheer heft and the waxy texture that Raveneau manages without it getting too heavy was quite a unique experience, great complexity.

Good to revisit this. Seashell, oyster, stone fruit, consummate and crushed rocks on the nose. For Chablis of this age, it is drinking at peak. Very similar to Rlove’s comment.

Still going strong, albeit perhaps a bit less concenttated from my last bottle, losing some midpalate oomph, Raveneau's 2002 Butteaux has peaked but shows no sign of oxidation, clean and pure, with lime blossom and plenty of Chablis typicity such as oyster shell. Floral on the palate. Very good.

Sadly, this didn't meet my expectations. It was a perfectly tasty aged Chablis--with sleek acids and minerals--but the overall impression was a bit muted and austere. A sharp divergence from the opulence that I associate with Raveneau. Enjoyable but not top-tier.

In a perfect spot with secondary and tertiary notes evident, Raveneau never seems to put a foot wrong whatever the year. Packed full of lemon and honey, I also pick the hint of clove mentioned by a fellow reviewer. It has perfect acidity and precision with the just the right amount of oak on the palate. The finish is excellent with lingering notes of oyster shell, lemon, and lime. It still benefits from decanting. 94+

Mid weight gold, straw. Lemon and lime citrus zest, softened by honeysuckle, hint of orange peel. A lovely minerality runs through, and a little chalky character. Fresh, excellent acidity, and a long lingering finish. Delicious, a great example.

high concentration and very phenolic (bitter, chalky, pithy etc). Low acid. This bottle felt slightly evolved for the cuvee, touch of formaldehyde, little sherrified. Underneath that character was old wood, honey, cheese, ripe peach, oyster shell- classic Chablis

#2 of 6. This bottle was as good a bottle of Butteaux as I have had. Clearly firing on all cylinders. I agree with others that this is a little rounder and oilier than I have found in other vintages of this wine.

An atypically fresh and strong bottle. Up and down performances with some of the '02s. Good chalky citrus notes, mid range tacky acids, and a nicely progressing palate. 93+

Lovely nose of lime blossom and oyster shell, potent and forward. Medium bodied with still-fresh acidity and saline minerality. There's a pleasing uniformity to Raveneau's 2002 Butteaux with both the acid and stoney, floral flavors offering consistent shape and intensity from first sip through to the persistent finish. Excellent.

A perfect bottle showing beautifully with plenty of zingy acidity but it's well-integrated into the wine. There is succulent lemony fruit along with hints of clove and oyster shell minerals. It has that light yet oily texture of aged Raveneau with nice tertiary notes on the very complex finish of brioche and sweet chalk. Gorgeous and at plateau.

Opened about 30 minutes prior to drinking. We discussed decanting, but ultimately didn’t. Served slightly chilled in Riedel Burgundy stems. Shimmery gold colored with a green tinge. The nose was powerful right from the start, with lime, shortbread, and oyster shells – still quite primary, especially on opening. There was a buttery edge for sure, but nothing overtly oaky. In the mouth, it was both broad and deep, the kind of mouthfeel that makes you want to take a huge sip all at once. We’re talking Raveneau broad, though, not broad in overall Chablis terms, let alone white burgundy. True to the vineyard, which I consider a lesser premier cru in his lineup, it was a little light through the mid and not perfectly focused or elegant, but it never went over the line into flabby, and in fact became more and more taught with air. Time may well help flesh out that mid-palate. I have to say, this was a truly glorious bottle of Chablis, exactly what I’d hope for from producer, vintage and vineyard. I loved it. It was the first bottle from a straight case that has been resting a long time in our cellar. If this bottle was indicative, we have years of spectacular drinking ahead. It seemed unaware, let alone concerned by, the years under its belt. It was everyone's WOTN with stiff competition. Oh – and we should have decanted it!
Beautiful nose of sweet butter, limes and oyster shells. Richly fruited although in an elegant package with delicious flavors of lemon/lime, clove and brown spices. Saline and succulence lead to a maturing finish with notes of caramel and sea shore. So complex on the finish with some remaining dry extract and yet a delicate sweetness on the back-end. This is a perfect bottle and hitting its plateau now and about as good a bottle of Rav Butteaux as I’ve had. Opened 3 hours before consumption and drunk at cellar temperature.

Took a while to blow off some consummate on the nose. Some white flowers and minerals on the nose. Palate gained weight and acidity in the glass. It showed character of the ripeness of the vintage but perfectly balanced. Still a long way to go before it starts to develop more nuances. Very nice. 92+

Everything was i perfect harmony except the back palate when we first opened the bottle. Thought it was a bit disjointed and not showing its age as well as I expected. Within 30 minutes the wine was truly in harmony a long finish of balance minerality, oysters and lime. In a great place.

Five DRC Grands Echezeaux. (Bellecour. Wayzata, MN): Decanted for over three hours, and as usual that was likely not enough. A touch of oxidation, that didn't overwhelm the wine but kept it from showing better than "good".

Have had a some bottle variability from a case I bought a couple years ago. However the last few bottles have been delicious. Great minerality , limestone and oyster shells. Beautiful light yellow color. I remain torn over when to drink them as some have been round and lacking character. While the last couple have been delicious and could be had now or over the next 5 to 10 years.

First of a six pack purchased on release. Beautiful medium yellow core, lighter at the edge. A beautiful nose of white fruits, mixed with hints of citrus and floral notes leapt from the glass. Refreshing acidity, lovely texture, perfect balance and finish. Consumed over two hours it was clear that this wine is just entering early maturity the fruit is just starting to show its complexity with a compact core of white fruits laced with hints of lemon, apple and melon. Currently drinking very well with upside over the next few years.
Very nice wine. Out with M & W, served blind. Nice fragrant bouquet. Citrus (primarily lemon), honey and melon on the palate with a nice dose of acidity, Next come some minerals which makes me think Chablis. Excellent companion for my sliced grilled octopus with hummus. My guess 2007 Chablis. Hmm, 2002 Raveneau, who knew? But for me, this is as close as I ever get. Great start to dinner.

Great bottle, but should have given this more air. Liquid limestone w/ so much stuffing. Still wound up. Nit is there's some hollowness and slight bitterness in the backend palate that I sometimes get w/ Raveneau Butteaux. But overall a really nice wine.

I'm not going to say this is the best bottle of the '02 Butteaux I've had but it might be. Deeply and classically Chablis -- stony, bracing, with a bit of a quinine-like bitterness at the back of the throat. Personally, I don't see the need for any more age here, but perhaps that's just my taste. A delicious thrill.

Light gold. A nose gorgeous, mature, and complex, with notes of seabreeze, apple, and lime blossom honey. Precise and focused on the palate with honeyed, salted minerality. The 2002 Butteaux has aged well and offers a stunning reference point for this premiere cru.

Classic Raveneau nose of ripe lemon/lime fruit and oyster shells. Showing just a bit of darkening color. Elegant and refined Chablis with fairly mature flavors of exotic spices, limestone minerals and citrus with good tingly acidity. Finishes finely complex with notes of oyster shells and caramel. This may still deepen in flavor and complexity over the next couple of years. 92+

Fresh lemon, sea salt, sweet floral scents and a point of peppery parsley are underlined by a subtle tone of roasted noisette. Palate is broad and expansive but never full or heavy. A rich, ripe chablis that maintains sublime elegance and near weightlessness.

Popped and poured. Light gold color. Nose of sea air, grapefruit, lime, flint, white flowers, apple core. Like chiseled stone on the palate with layers of crystalline mineral elements joined by melon, citrus, a bit of granny apple, and oyster shell. Bright, refreshing acidity and aristocratic tensile structure adding to the sense of purity and cut. Long, lingering finish of schist, grip, and slightly tart white fruit. Shows rapier-like precision and purity in its late adolescence, a beautiful example of this appellation.

Served alongside the 04. Initially I preferred the 04, however the 02 blossomed in the glass. Aromatic from the get go. Mineral, citrus...not a lot of honey or beeswax that I many times get with older Raveneau. Big mid-palate. Very fresh, great finish....continued to improve in the glass...this wine needs lots of air.

We drank the 02 and 04 side by side. Both were decanted for four hours, and could have handled more. For me the 02 stood ou t by a wide margin, and was a more complete and sophisticated wine. The 04 started out somewhat flamboyant, and a few folks liked it better initially, but the 02 won over everyone in the end. A very enjoyable flight, and while Raveneau Butteaux is understated, it's also very sexy.

Super Bowl 2014 (Roswell, GA): Bright pure yellow; butter, rich, wax, nutty, lemon, hazelnut, melon, luxurious and noble nose; high acid, rich then tons of mineral rain down on your tongue, tart, candle wax, poached pear, long high toned finish with apricot and whispers of exotic tropical fruit that echo; very youthful and in need of much more time (I'd give 5 years at least) to shed the baby fat that still shrouds this wine; some called Le Montrachet; glad that everybody seemed to enjoy; 94+ with 95-96 potential.

Fremdeles ung. Trenger luft.

RAVENEAU Tasting @ Restaurant De Eendracht (Rotterdam , Netherlands): Upon opening, this next wine had a lightly intense watery core, which when poured had intensified to medium intense canary yellow with golden highlights. On the nose too, the barely registering impressions of white flowers and saline mineral clay have intensified to pronounced notes of lemon sherbet, cardamom & other asian dried spice and a ripe rock melon component; all over a liquid limestone base. Medium-plus bodied on the attack, the pronounced acidity is now impeccably buffered and integrated to the extent that this wine presents a wonderful drinking experience, where it was quite dry and really attacked the gums in the morning. It does not disappoint on the mid-palate either, as refined & pronounced flavours of red grapefruit and spiced melon receive lift from the similar fatty clay-like mineral sensation that the previous wine merely hinted at. The finish adds an interesting slight bitter fennel-seed touch and continues to entertain for a good 40 seconds, while leaving behind a thick deposit of minerals on the tongue… or so it seems. I see no qualms in drinking this wine now –but it will hold for years longer– and award 93 points. Unfortunately, I have only a single bottle left ..... TN Mike de Lange

Medium lemon. Rich lemon custard on the nose. Marvelously ripe entry with silky texture offset by a sparkling finish full of brine and acidity. Much more structured than it seems on first sip. This fully takes advantage of the ripeness of the vintage while retaining great shape and Chablis typicity. Fantastic bottle, probably the best I've had of this wine. Hard to imagine it getting much better than it is now.

Like polished gold in the glass. Stupendous aromas--kaleidoscopically magical and beyond description. The palate seems to be on steroids: I'd swear there's three bottles' worth of flavor and complexity in this one (really good bottles, too). Absolutely intense, pulsing, and seems nowhere near ten years old. This must have seen a decent amount of new(ish) wood as there's bountiful evidence of it, but it adds rather than detracts. Astonishing premier cru Chablis.

Chablis Tasting (Mykha's, Glen Ellyn, Illinois): Opened by TrekkerDan. First time I have had a wine from this producer. 2002 was probably the best vintage for Chablis in the last 10 years. Sushi Dinner with 2000 and 2002 Premier and Grand Cru Chablis: Intense lemon and all manner of citrus on the nose. Very high toned and the most astoundingly perfumed wine of the series. Great back end intensity and structure. Unlike the Dauvissat Vaillons, I would not have guessed 2002 if tasted blind. Gorgeous and the one Premier Cru that gave the Grand Crus a run for their money. Much tighter and precise than the only other time I had this 2 years ago.

Stunning at Fifth Floor resto in SF, opened three hours before, decanted and poured back into bottle and recorked. At first -- a spicy, lemon/lime minerally quality. With just a bit of aeration and warming up in the glass, an ethereal melange of spearmint, oyster shell, honeysuckle, white truffle, anise, and antiques. Twelve of us were swooning, amazing with Fifth Floor's duck fat poached halibut.

Chilled then popped and poured to accompany shrimp on pasta. Pale honey gold. Precision nose of schist, flint, lilies, grapefruit, and sea air soaring from the glass. Remarkable presence and cut on the palate, with tangy layers of lemon, grapefruit, and Bartlett pear run through with notes of flint, oyster shell, and brine. Bracing acidity and tensile structure ending in a long, long finish marked by grippy minerality and white fruit. Wow, a truly beautiful showing for this quintessential Chablis.

Virtually undistinguishable in colour from its older sibling, this Butteaux starts out but medium intense on the nose, but that doesn’t keep it from displaying serious elegance and precision. Fresh notes of ripe limes, fennel, licorice & oyster shell minerality and a hint of creaminess are shining brightly without anything dominating the rest. On the attack, this wine is slightly more than medium bodied after which a combined effort from both pronounced acidity and minerality lends tremendous left to the intense flavours of lemon sherbet, saline oyster-shell, fresh spearmint and fennel bulb. Not as dense and oily as the 2000, it is however much more elegant and a poster child for the old axiom of weightless intensity. Its balance is impeccable and I’m usually not given to metaphoric allusions, but in that sense it reminds me of Mozart’s best work. The 35 second finish is another masterpiece of balance, finesse and elegance and manages to add an ashy mineral edge, which lasts for at least half a minute longer. This is hands down the best 1er Cru Chablis I ever tasted and with that in mind, 94 points seem stingy. Considering its youngish demeanour and sound structure, it may even improve a point but if you have enough stashed away or you like your Raveneau on the adolescent side, then do yourself the huge favour of popping one...........TN Mike de Lange

I've been sipping this wine all night trying to find any hint of what John Gilman says is botrytis and notes of pineapple but I can definitively say he is drinking from a different batch of bottles than I've got. This wine has barely budged since I last tasted it several years ago. It is a fairly large-scaled Butteaux with classic lemon/lime and oyster shell flavors. The finish is stinging with intensity and fresh acidity but it is clearly holding back a lot and still needs time to develop. Very well poised for a long and lovely evolution. 92+

Baume PA Rob, Julie, Mel – Wow, just gorgeous. A study in ethereal balance and expressiveness. Decanted an hour, I almost always decant young Chablis these days. Takes the edge off the bite and opens up the exotic notes, and there were plenty here with that gorgeous spearminty white truffle swirling in and out of a waxy candles-in-the cathedral nose. Lemon thyme, chalky candy, white chocolate and spearmint on the nose and palate. A tad richer style with some vanilla frosting and ripe fruit in addition. Hauntingly ethereal balance on the palate. Gorgeous pairing with appetizer dishes of seafood and interesting things.
Mid to full golden yellow in the decanter but a more reassuring mid straw in the glass. Quite a delicate but persistent nose of seaspray, a touch of mineral. A light attack, some minerality, lovely balance but a little lacking in intensity and persistence on the finish. Lacks the energy and mineral grip of some similar-aged Fevre premiers enjoyed over the past couple of years. Good match with a salad of spring veg. Top ***

Raveneau Butteaux Vertical at Vin, Vino Wine, Palo Alto, CA (Palo Alto, CA): VVW Butteaux vertical with Iron Chevsky -- Lovely. At first I found it a tad over ripe with a teeny bit of glue/postage stamp aromatics, but it evolved in the glass and was just gorgeous and seductive. As it opened in the glass I got truffle-infused orange blossom oil, white flowers, and a fine and unoffensive warm, wet sawdust element. Very rich and round on the palate, a Raveneau hedonist's wine!

Raveneau Butteaux Vertical (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): This had more of the trademark Raveneau hazelnut than any other vintage. Creamy, rich with predominantly citrus fruit with complicating notes of paraffin and spice. Pretty exotic stuff with a wonderful texture, but the delineation is not quite there, and the finish is a bit short. I must say that for the reputation of the vintage, this was a bit of a let down as well.

A little more approachable than I would have thought, still with plenty of buffering sap to counter all of the razor sharp, mineral Chablis things. A hint of mandarin peel on the nose adds complexity and wonderful texture combined with piercing drive on the finish puts a smile on this Chablis lover’s dial.

Stunning! This wine was decanted and served with raw oysters purchased from Hog Island Oyster Co. After having a recent corked Raveneau and an '04 Butteaux that did not show as well as expected, this wine more than made up for the shortcomings of the other wines. This showed wonderful aromatics of oyster shell, lemon tart, spices and minerals. The bouquet is pure and expressive with excellent complexity and depth. The color is correct for its age and remains vibrant. The medium bodied palate continues the theme of the aromatics with excellent concentration, balance, depth and complexity. This paired perfectly with the oysters. This is an outstanding bottle of wine.

First from a 6-pack purchased on release. Curiosity made me open one now. Nice pale yellow the nose is very precise with hints of peach, nuts and a briny sea foam. Browsing the wine list from one of our favourite, unknown restaurants in Burgundy, we found this gem for 46 euros a bottle (!) and jumped on it immediatly. Obviously this wine needs time but the balance is already prefect and the wine exquisitely fine and precise. Don't expect fireworks here, rather a very controlled wine. A very striking feature was the fact that despite the rather high acidity, everything was in check compared to the 96 Montee de Tonerre tried earlier this year where the level of acidity was almost painful.

high concentration and very phenolic (bitter, chalky, pithy etc). Low acid. This bottle felt slightly evolved for the cuvee, touch of formaldehyde, little sherrified. Underneath that character was old wood, honey, cheese, ripe peach, oyster shell- classic Chablis

Very nice. 92+

Now we are talkin! Super flinty mineral nose but a mouthfeel that was downright creamy. This fired all the right notes with an amazingly persistent and powerful finish. Laser-like on the attack but broad on the finish. Great stuff.

This is why I like Raveneau! Fourth time tasting this wine and it is showing the best it ever has. Citrus zest, wet stones, and blossoms made way to a touch of toastiness (which I have never come across before). Great depth and mouth watering. These are drinking very well now.

An excuse to drink my only bottle of VVF (Sydney, Australia): A nose of iodine, subtle vanilla, oyster shells and sea spray. The palate has lovely weight of subtly rich flavour with excellent balancing acidity. Long finish. Significantly better than a bottle tried early last year. I would love to see another bottle in 5 years time.

First from a 6-pack purchased on release. Curiosity made me open one now.
Nice pale yellow the nose is very precise with hints of peach, nuts and a briny sea foam. The palate expresses great purity predominated by sea mineral rounded by ripe pit fruit. The oyster shell finish is really impressive persisting nearly 2 minutes. So happy to have purchased this.

Very different from 6-9months ago. Less of the floral/fruity nose and more mineral, sea shells & iodine type aromas. Good length, acidity was present but not shrill suspect it is shutting down. Revisit in 2-3 years?

There was something a bit off about this bottle. A slight funky element on the nose as well as some sulfur and some grapefruit and under-ripe pineapple. The mouthfeel is creamy and shows some class but there is some unsettling bitterness on the finish. Should have been better.
