Quite remarkable for a 40 year-old wine from young vines. Still quite dark with no bricking, very fruity and fresh, full-bodied, balanced, dark fruits, smooth. Cellared since original release.

Kleur: Robijnrood. Aroma / bouquet: Aangenaam vineus bouquet, opvallend 'stoffig', witte peper, wat cederhout. Smaak / Afdronk: Sappige, aangename wijn. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 90/100
Colour: Ruby red. Aroma / bouquet: Pleasant vinous bouquet, noticeably 'dusty', white pepper, some cedar wood. Taste / Aftertaste: Juicy, pleasant wine. Pleasant acidity, firm tannins with a pleasant 'angularity'. Ripe, but not overripe in any way, no trace of madeira or maggi. Long aftertaste. General / potential: Difficult to properly estimate the vintage of this wine, remarkably youthful and vital! 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Taste / Aftertaste: 16 + General / potential: 9 = 90/100

Mas de Daumas Gassac Tasting and Dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Magnum. Mature but lively appearance. Showing beautifully in its majesty, also wonderful fruit and freshness, very impressive development in bottle, cedary like a rich old claret, meat stew, seamless, warm but classical, mature but nothing off, salmiac, big but ripe tannins, complete finish, very good length. A perfect magnum.

My friends couldn’t guess blind this iconic Bordeaux blend from the late Languedoc legend Aimé Guibert, a bottle that yours truly picked from Tornano’s outstanding and enviable cellar.
Oldest Daumas de Gassac I’ve had so far, and from a stellar vintage. Mature wine, full of tertiary aromas - fallen leaves and yellow fading grass, earthy, a bit of water from a deep underground well - but the Can Sauvignon is definitely there, slyly smiling.
Amazing longevity.

earthy nose, tobacco, dark fruit Very savoury, earthy, pencil shavings, tannins still very firm In good condition, impressive if not particularly hedonistic An easier wine to admire than to love
Cellared since original release. Spectacular bottle, far exceeding my expectations. Great complexity with cedar, smokiness, cassis, perfect balance, outstanding intensity and youth.
Possibly the best vintage of all for Mas de Daumas and this was a bottle in superb condition. Dark and youthful (virtually no discoloration), restrained, complex, long. Not fully mature, and a bottle such as this will be perfection in 10 years time. Outstanding.

There's a big ball of cassis here, round, broad, and a little dusty, with clear expression of soil. It's fully developed but not going anywhere, and needed several hours of air to really open. Really complex.

Birth year wines (plus some extra's) (@ JB): Beautiful bouquet with iodine, cinnamon and some pleasant barnyard. On the palate red fruits, cinnamon and other sweet spices, licorice, beautiful acidity and good tannin which is soft and still has a pleasant bite. Great wine and this is a perfect bottle; beautifully mature and it will probably stay on this level for some years.

Not bad for a bottle bought in 1984-5 for $4.95 (less 10% case discount) from Kermit Lynch. I recall the wine early on showing quite well early on in a blind tasting with 1982 clarets. Then for about 10-20 years, it didn't seem to change at all -- similar to many California Cabernets. However, for the last 10-20 years, it has evolved into a ringer for a fine, mature claret. At this time, the wine was composed of 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. The wine has some accajou (but not orange) at the edges, but is still quite deep and dark (but not opaque) in the middle. The wine is medium-bodied and still firm (but not tannic) with mature cassis fruit -- blind I'd expect the northern Médoc, although a California Cabernet from the 1970s would also be reasonable. The wine still can hold many years.
With an hour or so in the decanter, the wine coarsens a little.

Nice mature bordeaux blend. A bit of funk, most dissipated after 15 minutes. Dark fruits on the nose with some barnyard. Palate smooth and mature, plenty of acid and still some tannins. Medium finish. Pretty nice with the basil crusted lamb loin.

Beautiful developed bouquet. The taste is ripe and complex with spices and black and red berries. Soft tannin and bitterness and elegant oak. Still going strong and no hurry drinking this wine. Give it enough air.

Dinner with Friends - Vinci (Chicago): Deep full ruby red in color. Aromatic with herbs, mushrooms, licorice layered on dark currants. Palate is medium bodied with soft tannins that aren't yet full integrated. Red currant fruits are still fresh. Herbs add interest to the modest finish. An interesting treat from off the beaten path.

Magnum. Immensely impressive. Almost black (still!), amazing nose, rocks and iron, soaring and rich Cabernet fruit; very powerful and rich palate, massive tannins, a bruiser, charm not exactly its forté. Will last for decades, especially in this format.

Occasional dinner group: Bordeaux 1982 (@ Treeswijkhoeve, Waalre, Netherlands): In the bouquet red and dark berries, garrigue and mint. On the palate juicy red berries, herbs and spices as well as good acidity and tannin. Clearly not a Bordeaux, but certainly a very ok wine and still going strong.

On the palate cherries, plums, dark berries, earth, firm but good acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. Good length. Ready now and really enjoyable. Can easily last until 2020.
