  • Transparent light ruby. No bricking! Dusty, floral nose. Beautiful light, wild strawberry palate. No sediment. None of the edges of tannin or acidity are there but still seems youthful somehow.

  • Opened and poured. Light garnet. Some aggressive stalkiness which quickly receded to show balsam wood, red fruit, and spice. Delicate, subtly sweet, outstanding acidity, mineral underpinning, and gentle, long finish. Another extremely successful bottle of this which held up very well during a 2 1/2 hour meal. These have generally been a great delight and offered incredible value.

The next day, the fruit is still hanging on, but it really shows more chocolate plus its minerality and soil. Quite a showing for a "minor" 53 year old wine.

  • Opened, immediately decanted for light sediment, and poured. Light tawny/garnet color but no browning. Some early VA and balsam wood on the nose, then gentle red fruit and spice with late celery stalk and pepperiness that stuck out a bit. Light to medium bodied, quite silky in the mouth. Subtly sweet, plummy fruit that is amazing for its age, brisk citric acidity, cinnamon, and some bitter chocolate richness at the end without any tannin to get in the way of a graceful fading finish. I've had remarkable luck with these bottles over the years, and this one lasted well over 2 hours and was every bit as good as one back in 2017.

Gran botella.

  • Brownish/reddish color, a bit like stewed strawberry juice..
On the nose some rose petals, leather dust, dusty tannins.
Very soft and subdued, not outstanding features anymore; everything seems to have melted together.
A fine wine, easy to drink but no outstanding or memorable characteristics.

  • Delicate, red fruit, sandalwood, most mature of night but still good. B

  • Archetypal old Rioja which extends my experiences with this Bodegas that they're good but not great. Old wood, brown sugar, rusty metal, orange peel, sauerkraut, herbal tea.

  • Ruby, yellowish rim.
Old wood and leather nose. No mildew or damp.
Still a touch of acid and tannin. A little blue fruit and raisin. Not youthful in any way, but still some fruit. No trace of oxidation. Seemed very delicate, but after an hour or two, came alive with pasta bolognese. Wow.

  • Brownish, rusty red color; on the nose a touch of "morbidezza": dried rose petals, leather, wet forest floor and dusty tannins.
On the palate it is very suave, round and refined, even ethereal. Still pleasurable to drink; needs attention. Alive, but not "kicking" very much any more. This wine is gently riding into the sunset.
    I would say: drink up.

  • Beautiful aged Rioja. Did not give much right after opening, but four hours of slow ox resulted in a very distinct marzipan note. Decided to decant just before consumption, and now the wine showed its true colors. Full orange/brown scent and flavor profile; damp earth, orange peel, iron, brown sugar, figs and leather. Fully resolved tannins, not the longest but really lovely.

  • Cork in good condition. This one was a fair good bottle, clean nose with dried red fruit, underbrush, old wood aromas. Not so likeable on palate, subtle, thin yet lacking acidity but without any flaws nor hints of oxidation.

Persistencia media. Notas licorosas.

  • Drinking beautifuly. Wish I had more

  • Wouldn't say the wine was flawed but it had dense, very dirty color. Some coffee aromas and other tertiary flavors. No trace of oxidation, light and low acidity. Perhaps should have let the bottle standing a full day. Couldn't go for more than half a glass.

  • This isn't the most regal old Rioja but it has a nice lifted aroma with some typical old Rioja notes in the background. On the palate there is red fruit and a zippy acidity that makes for a very refreshing drink.
It doesn't have the layers of complexity of the best wines but it's an impressive 47 year old!

  • Mature Rioja @ Medlar (Medlar, London): Mid garnet. Nicely mocha on the nose. Quite evolved with good orange peel typicity. Fresh and sprite lay on the palate. Lighter framed and brighter. Gets a little lost in the (stellar) crowd, but singing brightly. ****

  • Garnet color. Balsam wood and a hint of volatile acidity which faded. Light weight. Gorgeous faded sweet red fruit, smokiness, spice, lively acidity. This acquitted itself beautifully over 3 hours, holding, developing, and never folding despite its advanced age. The fourth bottle I've had since 2013 at this remarkably consistent level. Bravo!

  • 1970 BODEGAS FRANCO-ESPANOLAS BORDON CORSECHA SPECIAL RIOJA- decanted for 15 minutes prior to serving; from a great vintage in Rioja, this showed beautifully albeit with considerable age represented first by the light browning color and then from the very sweet tertiary fruit notes of spicy red and black cherry; it was delightful and so giving of its fruit flavors in a light to medium expression.

  • Mid ruby. Bright and clean but ever so slightly Woody on the attack. Mildly corked I think, though it doesn't get worse, but not does it blow off. Having had good bottles previously, this one is a touch off. Shame.

  • Pale tawny red. Balsam wood and faded red fruit. Gentle, mellow, subtly sweet fruit, and lovely spice. This persisted and improved for several hours. My favorite of the 3 Franco Españolas wines tonight and just a beautiful older Rioja.

  • Mid-shoulder fill. Burnished browning light red color with watery edge. Perfect old Rioja nose with balsam wood, strawberry fruit, and cinnamon. Light to medium weight. Striking remaining sweetness of fruit and tangy acidity. Carressing feel unencumbered by any residual tannin-just pure elegance and gentle harmony. This held up beautifully pouring it directly out of the bottle for a good 2 hours. My word, 3 bottles of this over the past 4 years, basically at 2 year intervals, and each time a wonderful, memorable experience. That is pretty amazing consistency for a 45 year old bottling.

  • Had a wet and crumbly cork. Oxidized beyond real drinkability, unfortunately.

  • Lovely nose. Savoury with ground coffee and warm fruit. Some weight and roundness on the attack, but a bit light on the finish. Decent but not as good as previous bottles. ***1/2

De color rubí marronoso de capa media-baja. Reflejos rojizos y anaranjados.

  • Really good trad Rioja.
Restrained, orange peel, Christmas spices, Nice fruit, elegant mouthfeel.
    Mature (obviously) but not fading.

  • Rioja @ 28-50: Slightly cloudy, mid to light garnet. Lovely sweet-fruited trad Rioja nose of orange peel, spice and Christmas fireside. A little thin and slightly astringent through the mid-palate initially, but this soon fills out nicely. Quietly persistent if not especially long. Lovely. ****

  • Murky brick color. Smell is gamey upon first sniff. Spice, cocoa, sour berry notes. Taste is smoky, with a bit of a cigar flavor. The cork fell apart, so maybe the wine was somewhat ruined by that.

  • Rioja and Ribera (Cambio del Tercio): Sweet, brightest red fruit, nicely mellow. A touch of vanilla and spice. Quite harmonious. Showing as well as previously. ****

  • Delicious. Almost sweet. Chocolate from the oak? Went great with duck confit.

  • After tasting this a few years ago, I was lucky enough to find another well stored bottle, and it provided an even more compelling experience this time. Tawny, pale color-fully mature. Incredible, evolving array of aromatics-just a brief whiff of VA that quickly blew off, sandalwood, burnt sugar, wafting strawberry fruit, citrus peel, menthol and clove. In a word, wow! Delicate, ethereal feel with superb acidity and very little remaining tannin. Long and gently sweet. This improved and the fruit blossomed over 2 hours before it reversed course and began to fade a bit. Amazing in every respect at age 43, and a peak old wine drinking experience. I've had the chance to drink some extraordinary aged wines over the past month; none of them were better than this.

  • Great colour, not showing any sign of bricking. Served blind along with some older CVNE wines. Ths has the most classically typical Rioja nose of them all. Really outstanding mix of some fruit and orange peel along with some tea notes. Quite smokey, a Burgundian element in the mouth with a nice streak of acidity. Very impressive. (92-94)

  • Most classically orange peel nose of the three. Lovely bright red fruit and sweetness. After approx 30 mins it starts to show more acidity and loses its sweetness, starts to show more smokiness and a slight astringency. (*)***

  • Ancient Rioja (1956 to 1976) (Contigo, San Francisco): Medium color. Piquant strawberries, brown sugar and spice, touch of smoke and a rising anise note. Big wine with dark chocolate and marzipan on the entry. Fresh acidity, great spicy cherry liqueur fruit, really young and not at all marked by wood. Different from any of the younger wines that preceded it. Absolutely amazing vibrance of the underlying fruit for 40+ year old wine. Not the most subtle or complex wine but hugely impressive nonetheless.
