Really good; classic Cappellano; savory, earthy, dark fruit, feels brooding and tight, but opens more than the initial notes make you think; powerful and full this was really very good and starting to enter maturity though it still has loads of time.

Camphor nose prominent, followed by tart cherry, underripe strawberry and a dirty (in a really good way) smell. Intriguing for sure - wanting to stay with it for several minutes before tasting. Later, a little more pine tar than camphor. At 17 the wine is still pretty primary - blast of sharp acidity carrying tart cherry flavors with incredibly fine, tight, drying tannin. Fantastic feel in the mouth. Light bodied, slightly delicate in the mouth but then rugged and bossy in the mouth. The finish is long and longer, drying, teeth coating tannin. But it’s all so good. This is an exceptional Cappellano Rupestris. But I think it’s another 5 years away as it’s quite primary. Even primal. Masculine and slightly fierce. Still, a lovely wine and a great experience. If I were assigning a number, which I’m not by the way, it would be a 94 or so. Also, I paid $50 bucks for this back many years ago, on release. Pretty sure it’s more than that now!

Very different to the last bottle. Tar on the nose, but also attractive herbs and blueberry/raspberry fruit. Increasingly aromatic with air: I gave this a 2-hour decant and it could have done with more. Lovely sweetness on the palate, elegant with very fine tannins. Really lovely.

Another object lesson in older Nebbiolo needing air. Light browning garnet color. Upon first whiff, all prune and volatile acidity. Before dinner at the 5 hour mark, thin, acidic, and earthy (not in a good way). I was not feeling optimistic. Fortunately, though, by time the pasta course arrived (after about 8 hours of air at this point), the transformation had occurred. More body and sap, brown spice, tobacco, orange peel, and some sweet red fruit. After coming close to tossing this, it wound up being satisfying and very good if nowhere near great. No mistaking its traditional leaner, funkier, more mineral style with all of the joy and sorrow that that brings.
Pretty red fruit, immense wall of tannins. The palate was so fresh, the structure so dominant, I completely missed on a 2011 barolo call. Great wine, needs more years to mellow out.
First bottle from Cappellano and I was impressed; its a dark, earthy, virile style of Barolo, but full of soul and delicious; the nose bursts out with pipe tobacco, forest floor, black truffles, mint, and ripe blue/black fruits. Floral notes emerge with air and more spice and balsam. The palate is full on with loads of flavor and plenty of tannin; with food it actually melds quite nicely and doesn't feel too tannic; delicious, old school style. I love it.

Opened a bottle to bring to a tasting. Decanted it, but found it tannic and rather unpleasing. Back to bottle and into the fridge. Three days later I remembered it. And the beast had become much more pleasurable. Dried flowers, tar, spices, dried fruits, mushroom. The fruit has now found it's place, the tannins (though still there) are much better integrated. A rather pleasurable surprise for a Tuesday evening. These wines seems to need a lot of air still when they're ok. (Had one oxidized). Corks are a disaster, small and not of top quality. Unsure if I will wait too long with the next bottles, but give it lots of air!

As much as I wanted this to be ready, it wasn't, and I wish I could say it's close, but it's not. Primary (mostly, also some secondary) red fruits, plenty of fresh acidity, and fine, sweet tannins on the med+ finish. All the pieces are here, but, to my palate, they have yet to come together as I believe they eventually will. HOLD. For another 5+ years? Probably. recommended
Strawberry and light camphor on the nose. On the palate, cherry with notes of rose petal, leather, and tar, with moderate to strong tannins and good acidity. This didn't evolve much over four hours. It's very early in its drinking window, unless you like your Barolo very young. The Cellartracker drinking window looks too short, and maybe a few years early as well. This was an excellent value at about $60, but I can't see paying the $100+ it is available for now.

Wines with the HDH Auction (Spiaggia): Not sure if this saw any air but it was quite approachable if rich and ripe in character. Plenty of classic red cherry, leather and licorice notes. Full bodied with good concentrated fruit that currently envelopes the structure. Pretty good now, but should improve with 5+ years in the cellar.

HDH auction at Spiaggia (Chicago, IL): Burly, powerful, and sweet, with a really intense tannic structure on the back end. Perhaps less ethereal and perfumed than I might expect from a Cappellano, but this is nonetheless a pretty imposing and powerful bottle. An excellent showing here, but this needs far more time. A huge step up from the sketchy 2006 last year.

Slowed for a few hours before drinking, clearly not enough for this wine - still very youthful at this stage. A bit tight in the beginning but both nose and palate were pure and complex. On nose, tar, truffle, blasmic, dark cherries, on the palate, offer lots of dark fruits, powerful but certainly not jammy, tannin was chewy, texture was complex and rich.
Some background on the names for my reference: Quote finewine geek: Otin Fiorin refers to the specific parcel in the Gabutti Vineyard owned by Cappellano. Piè Rupestris refers to the original America root stock vines within this parcel planted in the 1940s, as opposed to the Franco vines which were planted with European root stock in 1989. Piè means foot, i.e. root stock. Rupestris refers to the American rootstock. Nebioli refers to the variety of clones of Nebbiolo used, as opposed to the Michet-only 1989 plantings.
PR 1969 Extravaganza: Red berries, tobacco, ash and black cherry. Textured but also tannic, this has very tightly wound fruit. Definitely needs more time to show its best side.

A huge, wide open nose of pure Serralunga. Balsam, cherry fruit, roses, and tar. A lung filling nose that draws you in. I could have just smelled this wine and been happy. Expansive on the palate with tremendous breadth, yet all in focus with a simultaneous grace coupled with its power. Structured and vertical with perfectly ripe fruit, wonderful inner mouth perfume, iron fist in velvet glove, all the while not showing any heat. It finishes with menthol and balsamic notes. Very long on the back end with ripe tannins that are in great balance with the wine's body and fruit. Drinking youthfully beautifully. This surprised me a lot with both how open it was and how harmonious it was. This exceeded my expectations. It looks like there may be bottle variability with this bottling, but based on this bottle, this is terrific and a joy to drink.

Decanted ~6 hours. Clearly a warmer vintage with richness and ripeness to the black cherry with loads of licorice and balsamic. Palate is approachable with round edges matches with a fine, suave tannin. Should hold for decades but quite nice now.

Browner color than I expected, but lievely on the palate. Sleepy nose with some light floral notes. Palate is still quite tannic, mostly leaterher and tar notes but quite posied. Probably still too young. First bottle with this producer.
After 4-5hrs open, finally showed more typical nose and the color brightened. Palate still brutally tannic. Not ready. Bumped a point for the nose.

Served next to the 2001 Franco which was one of my WOTN so a bit unfair. This is clearly very young and much stronger tannins. An intense wine. Cracked black pepper, iron ore, minerals. A bit less pulled together than the '01 Franco, but there is definitely potential here.

Wow - this was just awesome. Had with the 2005 Conterno Francia and the wines were very similar, but very different, and this was the favorite. Powerful classic Cappellano nose of tar, balsamic, soil, smoke. Tannins are hard and rustic, but amazingly integrated for such a powerful wine and great acidity. This was surprisingly open within first few hours and held up fine through day two. Suspect this will get better with each decade, but great to drink now.

One of the highlights of our Piemonte trip. Fabulous, but extremely young. Beautiful nose. Enjoyed with olives and cheese on the fourth floor roof terrace of the Hotel Metropole Bellagio overlooking Lake Como. Life is good...
WSET Level 2 Class 5 (BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind. Clear, medium garnet to tawny. Nose is clean, with pronounced aromas of liquorice, flowers, tar, mushroom, slightly raisiny black cherry. Gained complexity with aeration. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, high tannins (astringent, but fine grained), medium+ body, with flavours of black tea, bitter herbs, black cherry pits, earth. Finish is long. Very good quailty Barolo that needs a lot more time.

Tria Fermentation School: Beautiful Barolo Master Class (Tria Fermentation School): a little bit underripe with some green notes on the nose. some pleasant floral notes are also peeking through. intense, chewy tannins on palate. nice tar notes begin to come in on top of the black fruit on the palate, but there is still something slightly underripe.

Pure is the word here. Fully ripe and bursting with fresh cherry juice, rainwater, dusty earth and roses. Focused and lifted. Concentrated, powerful and long. Masculine but refined, this appears to be a wine for the ages. Really exceptional.

Beautiful nose of Balsam, raspberry, rose and mushroom followed by a clean bright complex finish with amazing grip and length. A star in the making.
