"There's a lot of fish at Montrose Harbor" (Chicago, IL): Really like how this vintage worked out for Egon. It's clearly on the sweet side of their Spätlese, but coupled with the chewy minerality that is always attendant at the site, this works really well. It's crisp and sweet, but the fruit doesn't show the roasted quality of 2003 either.

Rieslingfan visits Albany; 1/26/2024-1/27/2024 (Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany): Superb, thrilling expression of Riesling - it's great to revisit this 13 years after my last bottle, and the array of youthful Riesling fruit is still there in spades, but now augmented by the beginnings of more savoury and smoky development. I love the sheer energy and intensity in this wine - there's plenty of acidity beneath the ripe, rich fruit, and it's an incredibly delicious, thrilling Riesling, though still showing very youthful. This has years and years ahead and I'm excited to have a few more to see how they develop.

Opened at Caprice in HK for the Jean Trimbach x Egon Muller Celebration Dinner by the winemakers themselves. Slow-oxed since 3pm and poured at around 10pm.
Served alongside the SHB Spätlese '07. This was drinking very well - sweetness much more pronounced than thr Kabinett as it should be, but everything was in balance. Lovely hints of stone-fruit balanced by minerality and acidity. Prime right now but definitely has the capacity to age longer.
Unfortunately for this particular bottle, the '07 was just better - but this is still an incredible Spätlese.

After eight på duft, med litt grønne urter. Flott syre/sødme-balanse i munnen og vinen føles ikke veldig søt, men har fylde som en spätlese. Sitter lenge. Moden nå, men kan nok lagres lenge.

Gave this, unusually for me, 24hrs decant, lovely nose of peaches limes floral hints, well integrated mouthful quite full but remains light and plenty to 'discover' quite long and well balanced, very high quality Riesling and like all the good ones plenty of life left. This was given to us a wedding anniversay gift as I would never pay the price asked, this is good but not that good, I have drunk the equal at a fraction of this one's cost.

This was excellent. Perhaps the wine of the afternoon (amongst an impressive line up). Sweet lemon and citrus notes on the nose. Very integrated. Stones and crushed lemon and almost a coating tannin in the mid palate. Lifting acidity. And a finish that goes on and on. Really amazing with great length and an oily unctuousness that is unique. Incredible alliance and purity of fruit and lift from the acidity. Beguilingly good.

White flowers, lime, minty herbs, peach, apricot, citrus juice, a touch of pith. Youthful, pure fruit, long and stony, ripe fresh fruit and deep cut. Brilliant, could use some time though. I don't think this is even close to its plateau.

Vacation wines; 7/29/2019-8/3/2019 (South Tirol): Popped and poured, drunk within an hour. Classic Egon Müller Spätlese with lots of ripe and exotic fruit, wonderful ripe, medium acidity. Nice tension and depth. Long and lingering finish. Only 8% abv, Absolutely delicious at the moment, but with a great future potential. 92-93+

Complementing the whole 5 course menu. Great balance between acidity and sweetness. A hint too broad compared to the other vintages as 08 or 10. Clean long finish

Kind of a waste to open right now. Reductive and sulfury, tight and backward, not very expressive, showing only sugar and acid. We decanted it but it didn't change much over an hour or so. Probably needs either several hours of air or several years of rest, preferably the latter.

Popped and poured. Transparent pale gold. Pineapple, passion fruit syrup nose. Silky entry, medium body, mild acidity which was amplified by the chilli dishes and became a gorgeous symphony. Tropical, citrus thru the mid palate, lime cordial medium finish. Excellent with stuffed eggplant, black bean and chilli sauce, where the sweetness of the Spatlese was a perfect match to the chilli, it brought out the acidity in the wine, both refreshing and exciting finish.

Citrus, green apple, slatey crushed sotone minerality, hint of honey. Not too much sweetness though very intense and deep savours. Tons of structure, density on midpalate, vibrant, steel-hard acidity, really long finish. Not so complex yet, also too young, but very powerful, concentrated and energetic wine. 92-94

Stunningly electric, intense Riesling. A spectrum of Riesling fruit ranging from tarter citrus fruits to riper peaches; vivid stony minerality; floral and herbal elements and powerful acidity that keeps it incredibly fresh and vibrant while cutting through the richness and sugar. Flat out wow, and I'm glad I have a few more to explore over the next few years.

Spectacular stuff. This is hard to put into words. Pretty much everything you can expect/want from a young Spätlese; a spectrum of bright Riesling fruit accented with floral, herbal and mineral elements; incredibly layered and nuanced with superb balance, a remarkable sense of lightness and finesse despite the intensity of the flavours, and tremendous length. What a wine.

I'm not sure Reisling gets any better than this..... All of the '09 Donnhoff, AJ Adams, etc. I have had has been amazing, as well as the Muller Kabinett. However, this stuff takes things to another level. The nose and palate both offer incredible layers of melon, citrus, ginger, and mineral. The lovely, slightly sweet palate is balanced nicely with lingering acidity..... A slight honeyed finish goes for, what seems, minuets..... I'd probably give this wine 100 points, but I'm ust not really sure what that means.

2011 Simple Series 6: WOTN (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 8% A.P. 3 567 142 07 10. Opened 24hrs prior to the dinner. Straw yellow. Aromas of ripe pineapple, rose water, liquid mineral with passion fruits and almost Sauvignon Blanc like grassiness aromas that gently display from the glass with a dash of underlying fresh honey sweetness. Not broad-shoulder nor expressive, still pretty unyielding despite being opened for more than 24hours. The palate is equally tight too that showed pretty focus with freshness and transparency thanks to the racy acidity. However, the acidity is kinda sharp at the moment and everything seems being discreet that resulted in somewhat lean and less expressive compared to some of the 2009 Spatlese from others maker. The finish is slightly more powerful and richer than the Auction with persistent and has this mineral that linger. I would love to see how is the evolution over the next 5yrs too. Buy - Maybe, re-taste is needed.

2011 Simple Series VI: Dave's Birthday (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Very good, but not quite as good in its extreme youth as one would expect given both the wine's reputation and its price tag. Like the auction bottle that preceded it, this was showed rather grumpy and infantile even though it was opened a good 24 hours before serving. On first pour, the nose had an awkward, almost Sauvignon Blanc like grassy, gooseberry note layered over some mineral and earth. I can't say it was the most attractive nose in the world. Thankfully, the grassiness went down over time to show rich white fruit scents, some lemons and limes, drops of petrol and some musky white flowers accents. The palate had the rich sweetness of the 2009 vintage, along with tons of flinty mineral and dollops of aggressive acidity spread across a mid-palate that showed some limes and sweet lemon flavours. This was even more clearly an Egon Muller than the auction bottling. Tons and tons of depth and intensity here moving into a long, grippy finish that coated the mouth with dry extract. Very impressive, but more in a distant, intellectually admirable way than many of its more immediately pleasing 2009 Spatlesen brethren from the Mosel or even the 2009 EM Kab. Give this at least a decade before approaching.

Sometimes a wine makes me drop everything and forget about taking notes, and this was such a wine. Even in the midst of very good competition (including being tasted right after the excellent AJ Adam spatlese), this wine immediately stood out to my wife and me as different, on a whole other level. The nose is light and hard to glean much from, but appealing. The palate was so light and smooth, so harmonious that I immediately had an emotional reaction to it. Simply dreamy and captivating. This wine is a great example of how some exalted rieslings can remind you of water - and feel so wonderful, perhaps because it captures some essentialness, a feeling of innate need. The fruit is not unctuous, but a sweetness pleases you - the delicate texture floats across your tongue, lightly sprinkling gorgeous fruit and mineral flavors and then disappearing unnoticed while you are still in reverie. Only after loving this wine did we consult the price list and find out that it was quite pricey at $120ish per bottle. A truly wonderful wine, that requires contemplation to plumb its mysteries; this is what mineral water in heaven must taste like. 97-100

8/10 - There wasn't enough of this to go around! A beautiful delicately elegant and aromatic nose of red apples, chinese pears, honey lemon and wet rock. The palate had even greater complexity with added flavours of pomelos and apricot. Balanced acidity and great length. Held up well against a very spicy Mee Siam but was even better alone. Think it still needs some time but already drinking beautifully now.
