2009 Mollydooker Shiraz Velvet Glove

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (78) Avg Score: 94.1 points

  • consistent with notes of 3/20/2016 - in a flight of 3 "bold" reds that included SQN and Schrader...wasn't quite up to those staggering wines, but was still fabulous.

  • Bold and opulent wine, showcasing intense aromas of black fruit, vanilla, and dark chocolate. With a rich, full-bodied palate, velvety texture, and well-integrated tannins, it delivers a good experience.

  • Evolved quite a bit over two days. The flavors were good with medium complexity and the tannins mellowed after decanting and being open for several hours. The fruits are probably fading and I think it would have been more enjoyable 12 months ago.

  • Popped the cork and soon re-stoppered because our menu suddenly changed from burgers to sushi. So finally, after 24 hours open, what strikes me the most is how this is still drinking just like it did 4 years ago. Of course, it is still that hedonistic-chocolate-lava cake of a wine that is as close to vintage port as it is to dry, so it could be used as a dessert wine for all practical purposes. And I thought I would either see signs of tertiary development or certain decline in structure, but neither were true. Even though it seems to have more shelf life, i don't think it will have any more to offer to my taste. Regardless, the deliciousness factor is undeniable in this current drinking window. 5+13+18+7= 93

  • Drinking well now. Lovely nose of black fruit, dried herbs and smoked bacon. If you're drinking Mollydooker you better know what you came for - on the palate this is highly extracted. Bordering on "too sweet" but not quite. Definitely a style that could be polarizing. That said, there is some additional complexity/minerality that stops this from being an out-and-out fruit bomb.

  • Port like with candy notes and dark fruit. Interesting at the end of the night.

  • My selection for the last CWG-D. I handled it in the way describe below after emailing the winery and talking to KR3 (Mr. Rombauer).

3:00pm opened and left inside the cellar upright
    3:15pm placed in the decanter
3:45pm back into the bottle and back to the cellar
4:00pm placed in the wine-bag and to the restaurant…
5:55pm the wine was served and the tasting began:

The color is dark ruby almost purple, the nose is strong with bacon fat and tobacco leafs. Sadly I knew since I transferred from the decanter to the bottle this was going to be an easy pick for my friends in the Blind Tasting. On the palate it’s pretty complex at this point, showing the multidimensional attribute that rewards “time-in-a-bottle”, patient and the pursuit of drinking wines at their peak of their journey… Black Pepper, Eucalyptus, Black currant and olives with cigar box, all combined in this heavenly expression of a well-conceived New World Shiraz!

There is no perceptible oak, tannin and acidity still very much present giving this wine the ability of keep performing at a very high level for at least 5-10 years…

Most of my friends guessed Shiraz but from other countries, they all loved it including myself. I think a longer decant would have undermined the way this wine was perceived and intended to taste, on the other hand it may have fooled my friends.

    WOTN by unanimous decision!

    96 drink or hold.

  • This bottle not so good, tastes like raspberry syrup. Very disappointing when you've been storing and anticipating drinking a wine, especially when its not inexpensive and it disappoints. Part of the wine drinking experience. If you've never seen this wine, it comes in a black velvet bag and the label is black velvet as well.

  • First time experience with the velvet glove. It did not disappoint! I could go on and on about how this blew everyone away at last night's dinner. Personally, I love the enormous fruit on the nose and mid palate. Black fruits dominate. Then is framed with a fantastic tannin and acid balanced back bone. Fun wine! But steep at 180.00 for price of admission. Great special occasion wine!

  • Deep purplish ruby red. Dark berries and spices on the nose with some floral nuances and caramel. Medium acidity with medium tannins (6/10) and medium plus bodied. Well integrated palate with red berries, caramel and spices. Long finish. Drink till 2024.

  • Garnet color with gentle browning of the edges. Monster nose. Wine is dark and brooding with massive fruit still. Lead pencil, spice, and oak. Everything is in harmony. Not too sweet like a lot of Aussie Shiraz. Alcohol is a bit hight but this wine is aging gracefully! I'll revisit in 5 more years, should be amazing.

  • Upon open there was an offensive odor and taste. Hard to distinguish. I decanted and checked 30 minutes later. Still present. Decided to put it back in the bottle and off to the restaurant with a backup bottle. Hoping. Decanted at restaurant and let it sit through first two courses. When our steaks were served it was beautiful. No odor just that typical blue and black fruit of Shiraz. Wonderful nose and 20 second finish. Nice balance. No heat. Great with steaks. It continued to improve the rest of the night and was just delicious with our chocolate lava cake. Wish I had more.

  • Deep dark purple in color. Notes of Blackberry, vanilla, licorice, and pepper on nose and palate. Dry, med+ body, nice acidity, elegant tannins. This wine is not all about the packaging, but it is still impressive. Very big, and still very young. Straight out of bottle was a fruit bomb. But after some time decanting started to mellow out. Will be great in another 5 years.

  • Not my cup of tea. Over-extracted fruit bomb, a jammy assault on the palate, flavors off putting

  • Up front, I’m going to say that Aussie Shiraz is not my thing. But this was big and balanced. Very smooth with vanilla oak, cassis, blackberry, and red fruit. Very ripe as expected but no unpleasant alchohol heat. A bit bigger and sweeter than is my taste but a very well made wine.

  • Kev's birthday "wine-o-rama"--- Wow, what a huge, lovely balanced wine. Brambly red fruit nose. Very soft mouth feel; smooth tannins. At first I thought I detected a little heat on the finish, but I think it was more a little acid finish. I can understand the huge scores for this wine; but my taste preference has drifted away from the big jammy Aussie shiraz style. This came closer to an after dinner glass of port, than a dinner wine. My lower than average score, which is still very good, only reflects my taste profile. All told, a facinating experience.

  • An Overdue Wednesday Wine Lunch (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Purple/red color. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 3 hours plus. There's a lot of interesting notes on this wine. I think my perspective has certainly changed over the course of the years as well. However, I still find this to be an extremely enjoyable wine. Knowing up front that this is not going to be a subtle wine, what matters to me is whether the wine is balanced. My biggest gripe with so many of the so-called big wines is that either they are ridiculously hot - something I just don't/won't tolerate or they are hugely over extracted and just over the top one dimensional monsters or they have simply been brutalized by far too much new oak or a combination thereof. I can truly say that this wine suffered from none of those issues. I'm not going to claim there wasn't a lot of ripe dark fruits or that I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. There is and I did - but this also comes off as refined, richly layered with creme de cassis, juicy blackberry, ripe raspberry, plum and the texture is so velvety and mouth coasting. The nose is explosive and the palate equally so. But this isn't just about the fruit, there is more going on here to provide interest if that wasn't enough. There's scorched earth, after a bit the savory roasted meats come forth, graphite, and white pepper as well. This showed impeccable balance. I don't want to drink this every day, but I can still appreciate what they've done here. Damn delicious stuff, this was in a an awfully sweet spot. I don't know that this gets better, I'd enjoy it for what it is now - though I would certainly be curious to see what this is like in another 10 years. Lovers of the style will go absilutely crazy over this wine. I can certainly understand scores that are far higher than mine (and the opposite too).

  • Almost unbelievable that it isn’t fortified, but I’ll be darned if it isn’t quite appealing as an after dinner embibe. It is so different and unique, that it is well-suited to a special occasion such as tonight. As for trying to assign a score, I can see why many would go 95+ and an equal number might go 50-.
Typical, and perhaps , the pinnacle of the Mollydooker style.

  • Rock finish. Petroleum and bark on the nose - beautiful initial attack that seems to be going to greatness and then it goes to average - seems like acid and vegetal is coming into the finish -

  • Tasted blind, theme was either Napa Cult Wines or High End Australian, not told directly to keep us on our toes.

Deep ruby red with fine sediment. Not as strong on the nose as the prior wine. Layered still with dark floral notes, sweet spices, bramble berries and a touch of caramel in the finish. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and a tad heavy on the acidity in the back end. Medium bodied with an excellent and smooth attack. Notes of dark cocoa, dark red fruits, and a touch of earthiness. Opened up a bit with some stewed dark berries and a hint of caramel. Long finish. Drink till 2024.

Last wine, definitely still an Australian Shiraz, but older than the prior wine. Definitely less than ten years old, but seems close to it. Decanted for two hours, might have been better with one.

  • Quite similar to my experience with the '10 about a year ago:

Popped, dumped into decanter for 30 mins, served with duck. Purple. Velvet. As advertised! Unabashed, hedonistic pleaser - it's big, it's full, it's rich. It's actually almost very well balanced to boot! Well made and fun as hell - even if not your desired style.

  • Mmmmmmm. Gooooood. I could probably give this better than a 96, but I don't think I have the palate to distinguish the difference from 96 to 100. What I can tell you is that this was delicious. Beautiful and delicious. We had this with a charcuterie plate at a restaurant and did not get to decant. Pop n pour. The nose was sweet and bold, and that was clear as soon as the served pulled the cork. Didn't even have to wait to smell it in the glass...it kind of just overtook the table. In the glass, the wine was dark and thick. A lot of sediment. I swirled and waited a few minutes, and finally took a taste. Whoa. Dark dark fruit, earth, sweet tannins and a long finish. All four of us felt this was just outstanding. The restaurant had this bottle at $200, which I felt was a steal so I purchased another bottle to go. I am going to force myself to give this some time, as I think it will only get better (and thus the reason I can only give this a 96).

  • Took a while to open. Was very closed out of the bottle. Over 3 hours the complexity arrived on the nose and palette, but by then most of the bottle was gone.

  • I passed this through the vinturi and then decanted for 2+ hours before serving. It is a thick and silky wine, very much in the style of MD and certainly their best offering. It is large, with a lot of character and certainly fruit forward, but I would not describe it a a fruit bomb. I think you have to put this wine in context, it is an aussie shiraz, not a northern rhone syrah. It is going to be fruit forward. It is very drinkable now, but has enough going on that it will last for a number of years.

  • Excellent wine, cork crumbled but wine was intact. Huge Shiraz that some may find overwhelming but we enjoyed with a few select cheeses. Heavy sediment throughout so suggest letting rest for a couple hours.

  • This wine was decanted for 4 hours, then Vinturi'd back into the original bottle. Even with that it was a HUGE fruit bomb! This is an over-the-top wine that will likely saturate your palette, so drink this when you are not going to have another wine after it. Everything about this wine is big. It has a very long finish and is nicely integrated (after the decanting/waiting/Vinturi'ing). Highly recommend this wine!

  • Impromptu gathering - Cos, Velvet Glove, SQN, Alban, Larkmead and etc. (Charlie Palmer - Washington DC): Served chill, strong note of blueberry liquor and crushed blueberries. Excellent concentration, blueberry liquor, chewy, nicely integrated tannins and good length. As expected, intensely fruity but one dimensional. Obviously YMMV.

If you like big wines, this is it! Really enjoyed. I only wish the price tag were more in line with other wines like this - Saxum - $90

I would drink this wine in the 2014-2017 timeframe, it is all about the fruit.

  • Tasted vs velvet glove and I was surprised the Molly dooker was tastier. The brookman, however, offered lots of earthy and chemicals smells and flavors that made it more interesting. On balance I preferred the glove.

  • If you like this sort of fruit rollup kind of wines this is excellent. A friend came over who likes "Australian, African and Argentinian" wines so I cracked this for her. The nose is a giant melange of berry and vanilla notes. The palate is thick and sweet but it does have a velvety texture. Drank it by itself as it is a cocktail wine for sure. I like it a lot though.

  • Ok, if I were scoring this wine for what it wants to be, it should easily be a 97-98 pt wine. It is a beast of a wine, super concentrated, mega delicious, extremely chewy. The "downside" so to speak, is that it is waaaay to big and you have to be in the mood for a wine like this. I cannot see someone drinking more than let´s say 3 glasses of this wine the same day. It is a very fun wine indeed, but it is just too much, but it is true to its nature and what it wants to represent. For me personally, its a wine between 93-95 points depending on my humour. The wine has years and years left and I think it is young right now. Maybe in 2 or 3 years it can integrate better. The wine is the 1,000 gorilla....beware.

  • 55 years and 1 day: The old man and his wine (Double blind tasting) (Vinozeros - Winterthur): Butter, honey, candied-nut-tart, cookie dough, caramel, licorice, raspberries and mixed herbs. This is a flavor rollercoster!

Downside is that it is a bit 'stingy' in the nose given the elevated alcohol, but still OK.

2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Nice intensity, shows great potential. Too young right now, wait until 2016 at least. A bit disjointed right now, needs to find harmony which it should find in about 4 years and should last for another 15 after that.

  • I am a big fan of the Mollydooker wines, and I had an opportunity to barrel taste this wine on a trip to Adelaide. This was a beautiful Shiraz, but it really was at best comparable to the Carnival of Love and the Ares (2007), albeit at a much higher price. The nose was muted, and it did not have the silky mouthfeel I remembered from the winery tasting. Nice balance, but no wow factor. Agree with others that this is not a wine to pair with a meal...it is the meal.

  • Over extracted, sugary sweet, think and heavy. Just not the type of wine I like. My sister loved it so I guess it is personal preference. It reminded me of having Smuckers blueberry Syrup when I was a kid.

  • Did poorly in a mixed varietal (but high end) red wine blind tasting. It had plenty of intensity but little elegance or complexity.

  • Blackberry silk-bomb with bits of clove and vanilla-cinnamon shrapnel that reaches the back of your palate effectively. Bridges power and elegance with a nice structured tannins. Long life left sitting sideways but compared to other shiraz top-guns in this price point this delivers its opulence nicely right away. Sidenote: sexy packaging. Would hate to work this bottling line.

  • Drank along side an Alban Reva and there was no comparison. The complete lack of any complexity was puzzling for such an expensive wine. The nose was rather muted. On the palate there was nothing but vanilla oak and the most candied chocolate raspberry fruit core that I've ever tasted in a wine. Almost like a shot that is on the menu at TGIFs. The finish wasn't anything to right home about either. Had it with a steak and was a terrible match as this wine needs to be consumed without food or over ice cream.

characteristics and pleasures. Black fruit gushes to the forfront, featuring blackberry,
currants, and mulberry with a fine tannic balance. A velvety backdrop drenched with

  • I scored this wine 94 points because it was young but I can see this wine hitting 96ish easy. After tasting the 2009 it told me I definitely want to cellar much more of this wine. Very dark purple and inky in color. Almost like an aged port. Very Jammy wine wine with Bing cherries, deep vanilla and strong blackberry. The transition was smooth and balanced with a long hang time that stayed fruity. This wine is a fruit bomb and of good quality. i cant say enough about this wine. In a few years it will be stellar. It's a little pricey at 160 bucks but it can hold its own. give this one a try but cellar it for a while.

fruits. Surprisingly approachable, this Velvet Glove shows off concentrated flavors of
blackberry, currant, anise and a touch of molasses. Rich coffee notes with a hint of

  • Incredible wine. Black/purple color. Beautiful dark fruit nose with some heat. On the palate, very thick, viscous, dark fruit. The alcohol is evident at this time, but I hope that in a couple of years it will be less evident. Very fun to drink. I have 8 more bottles at my cellar but I will not pop one up for a year.

  • Hmmm so this is the second time I disagree with everyone else at the table about this wine. And mind you, I think the 06 is the best wine Sparky ever made (he nodded when I asked what he thought of that since we drank some MP Integrity as well.) Sweet nose, with smoke and beef. The palate is full and sweet with lots of oak (too much at this point, thats right, even for me) with tons of dark fruits and some chocolate. Significant alcohol in the finish. I have found this off balance 2 out of 2 times so far. I think the COL is much better at this point.

  • I confess to having been a little dissapointed. I have three of these on the way. Where the 06 is chuck full of berries and spices this one is a monolith of vanilla and blueberries. The mid palate seemed hollow to me and the finish a bit grany. Will revisit next week so we shall see.

  • This has massive dark fruit, but it also has amazing structure. It is very rich and dark in color. The nose is berries, vanilla, and hint of smoke. The finish is very long. I could see this being a 98+ once it has some cellar time. It is still a bit hot. This represents another crowning achievement for Mollydooker!

  • This is how I imagine a bowl of fresh smashed blackberries to smell like, soooooo fresh and deep. You just happened to be making coffee at the same time and maybe nibbling a bit of chocolate. Wow, the palate here is crazy, the mid-palate lasts 20 seconds after the wine is swallowed then the acidity and tannins finally trump the diminishing fruit. I've had similar experiences with another wine I love, the 'Alto Moncayo' line of Spanish Granacha's. The finish here lasts nearly forever. Where as the 'Carnival of Love' is PURPLE DRANK, this is much more refined and as large as it is cannot be classified as syrupy. The structure on this wine is a total winner, this is one epic fruit bomb. Jay Miller approved!

  • Live Wine Blogging, Reds (Wine Blogger's Conference, Walla Walla, Washington): Complex on the nose with jammy blackberry, cherry, evergreen some vanilla oak. The wine is soft on approach and blackberry flavors run all the way across. They start out typical and then explode into a full on jammy fireworks. The king of fruit bombs. The sweetness is palpable, with eucalyptus flavors lingering long. The jammy texture is powerful but acid does still play. The tannins are present, but very soft. Everything hangs on for a long time and it's well integrated already. The blackberries are totally delicious, but I like them best before the full strength sets in. It does overwhelm me a bit towards the finish. This is clearly shooting for decadent candy, and it delivers in spades. You know what you're getting into if you open a bottle of this, and it does exactly what you want it to. The super ripe fruit is a bit much for me, but it's decadent, make no mistake. The heat shows a bit, but it's definitely more integrated than other similar wines. 90 pts, if you're into FRUIT explosions. It would be fun to get photo/video reactions of people tasting this wine for the first time.
