After reading all reviews of distinguish and noble members of the CT I have to conclusions that I had completely different wine. First of all the wine penetrated no more then a half millimeter of cork( I took a picture). Second - about 3 months ago I had 2001 vintage and I liked it - 95 points. And how about this one? 15 minutes in the decanter. ⏰ First sip and I immediately knew it was better! Very powerful wine, that stays on darker side of the Force 😎 Black coffee and black tea, black currant, black chocolate ( is it Merlot from the right bank? 😉), tobacco, mocca. Very grippy tannins, dry, long finish with cinnamon ( nice!). Smell is incredible complex and rich. Blackberry, black currant, cedar, graphite, milk chocolate, tobacco, plum, vanilla and more sweet aromas. Delicious, highly drinkable wine for all kinds of drinker profiles. I would bet 100% that 2004 had more Merlot than 2001, but I would be wrong. 2001- 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot & 5% Cabernet Franc 2004 - 70% cabernet sauvignon 20% merlot, 2% petit verdot, 8% cabernet franc
And be smart here, little man 🙄
2004 was rated the same like 2001 - 88 points according to the WA Vintage Guide. Wine? JS - 93 Vinous - 92 WS - 91 WE - 90 RP - 90 tasted in 2007 RP - 93 tasted in 2009

Drank this at friendsgiving this year, served with a rib roast + typical thanksgiving sides.
I must say I'm becoming more and more a fan of these off vintage, middle aged (20 year old) Bordeauxs. This hit all the right notes: currant, black fruits, tobacco, cedar, spice box on the nose. On the palate the fruit was primary, with heavy accents from the spice element and some tertiary earthy elements just underneath which added a very well rounded touch to the whole experience. Tannins were well integrated and acidity was fresh enough to allow it to pair well with the food, yet not so overpowering that it couldn't be enjoyed on its own.
My only knock would be that it felt a bit flat from the mid-palate back. Otherwise, a perfectly mature and accessible Bordeaux at a reasonable price point

Wow! This is incredibly warm and sweet for a Medoc from a medium-rated vintage. It could be new world. But combine it with the coal, cedar and spice and it's fantastic. Up there with the Barton 04.

3/12, vg cork. Decanted 1/2 hr. Deep ruby core, pale ruby/garnet rim. Cedary nose, mainly red berry fruit, touch of gravel and smoke. Medium bodied, red fruit, creamy edge, cedar, spice, soft tannins, fresh acidity, good length lightluy grippy finish. VGI if not earth-moving, ready to go but no hurry.

This is very very ready, fully settled with a gentle aged texture alongside mature notes of faded red berry and cedar. It is a little whispy and, if I’m being honest, was probably better a couple of years ago. But still a cracking claret at this price point. Do drink up though, as I don’t think this will be around for a long while.

The TWS mystery case is now 5 for 5- this was lovely: rich, hedonistic and full with a beautifully pronounced and perfumed nose. Showing a good balance of rounded fruit and tertiary development on the nose- tipped more towards the former at this stage- ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry supported by tobacco, leather and cedar. Judging by the palate, this is in a good place for drinking now - the tannins are smooth and it’s rich, textural - but the acidity is starting to get a little sharp and jumpy, a touch pinched on the finish. Went beautifully with French bistro classics.
2004 Horizontal Dinner (Tunglok Peking Duck Novena): Medium deep ruby, with violet purple hue. Fresh cut grass aromas, with blackberry and ripe cherry, and a hint of bandaid, then pepper and nutmeg. Quite intensely flavoured, whilst with some fairly resolved tannins, and lively acids, however it seems like the core is a little hollow, but flavours still classic of redcurrant and blackberry, and then some greens and spices. Medium length

Bordeaux Wimps June 2023 - 1945 (La Trompette): I was worried that, after the preceding flight, these comparative youngsters might taste a little clumsy. No fear at all on this front - this was great. A hint of greenness - but fully in balance, I wouldn't say gentle but this is a proper claret that talks rather than shouts.

Classic St. Julien pencil-box nose. Tannins entirely resolved, finishes sweet. Cassis. Seamless presentation. Drink now; further development of tertiary elements may come at expense of elegance.

Drink it if you've got it, this isn't going to get any better. '04 isn't the best of vintages but still produce some excellent wines despite heavy rain during late August. Earthy nose leather and blackcurrant on the palate. Smooth soft tannins.

Raspberry, blueberry, gravel, cigar box; smooth, balanced, fairly linear, some fruit remaining though a little dulled by age but overall a well constructed wine

Pnp. Classic cedar, cassis notes on the nose. Purity of fruit on the palate, with interesting tobacco leaf and barnyard secondary notes to add complexity. A little thinner than I remember on the mid-palate, but good persistence in the medium-long finish. Tannins fully resolved. Drink now.

Neil’s Langoa Barton @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, Guildhall): A touch lactic, but not the full on VA others are reporting, more a bottle stink. A touch evolved on the nose, but several stops short of Bovril, and at worst more akin to smoky beef hula hoops. Eases and lifts with air to reveal a classical vintage claret. Really quite lovely in an u showy manner. Very fat and leggy in the glass. Lots here of interest. ****

Decanted for 2 hours and showed very nicely. The discreet performer, this showcases classic claret - nothing loud or overstylised. Textbook blackcurrant and cedar nose with hints of sandalwood, spice, and darker fruits. Quite creamy, but with just a hint of austerity in the palate that adds interest in a sort of teasing way. Finish is delightful, fully integrated tannins. In a very nice place. Not sure it will improve massively, but certainly no rush.

This still has a lot of stuffing, muted upon opening I took a glass out and let the bottle sit the whole day @ 13 degrees and let it sit at room temperature for an hour before dinner. The nose is on creamy cassis ,cedar and a hint of pencil lead. the mouth is linear and classic claret, black berries and cola and forest floor, graphite, tannins not fully resolved, lovely acidity to give some lift, decent length, there is still enough fruit and stuffing in there to last another 5 years . Make sure to decant properly if drinking anytime soon.

Tasted on PnP and it was thinnish, green veggies and ungenerous. I decanted it and gave it a few vigorous swirls. After 1 hour, much bigger and fuller flavors. Slight nose despite big Bordeaux glass, of cedar, currants, tobacco and raspberry compôte. Good fruit of plum, currants, a touch of black licorice, dry tannins. With a long finish of plum, savory tannins and a touch of balsamic. Bright in the mouth with lots of flavor. Very happy with this wine and it is drinking well with the decant. Probably good for 3-5 years with this late middle aged flavor profile.

The Wagyu Ribcap & Rib Cover steaks comparison from Allen Brothers. The sell only the top 1% of beef.
The Barton is 100% steak wine.
Classic Caret even in a marginal vintage...Anthony to the rescue.
The body is medium to full & sails on the palate. Ripe & ruby; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, black plum, uncooked rhubarb with hue of raspberries. Cedar, sandstone/limestone, tobacco, leather, graphite, dry river stones, dark, rich, earth, licorice, dark cola, dark spice with heat, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, moist clay, melted caramel & mocha, dark chocolate bar, black pepper with bright, candied, fresh, dark, red, purple & blue florals. the acidity is a gentle, cool to warm rain shower. The finish is, all St. Julien elegance, well intergraded, balanced, landing on earth & spice that is persistent for days.

After 30 mins in decanter, feels rich and quite deep in both colour and pallet. Blackcurrants, graphite and tobacco. Very nice, still feels quite young. The wine loosened up over a few hours and was very enjoyable. I’ll leave next bottle for at least a year or two.

This is surprisingly rich and, though in the drinking window, has a lot more stuffing than my last note suggested. Lots of lively red fruit here with a punchy blast of oak. I actually think this will be a lot better in 3/4 years.

Wineist05 pretty much has it nailed. I haven't been drinking Bordeaux in a long time, more a Beaujolais guy and Burgundy and Northern Rhone when I can afford it, but this was really special with rack of lamb from Markus Wand's local farm in Powassen. Beautiful fruit forward with lots of secondary and tertiary development. Slight bricking but I get the feeling it will last at 5-10.

Dark colour, almost Margaux like. Still good colour in the glass with only minor signs of age. Very attractive on the nose, blackcurrant with some integrated fresh red fruit and integrated oak. Excellent taste and drinking very well now. Will still keep a decade or more. A well made Langoa from a difficult year. Excellent value.

This wine is really singing! Have had several bottles over last few years, this is the best so far. Similar to previous notes but now with such perfect integration of tertiary components. Decanted only 30 minutes but not really needed other than sediment. Deep garnet red, sight bricking color. Nose is of refined dark berries, black truffle, saddle leather, hint of pleasant smoke. Palate is more of the same with a surprising amount of freshness remaining. Clearly was an acidic and high tannic wine in its youth. Tannins still present but well integrated. Langoa Barton is a perennial rockstar but most appreciated with 10+ years of bottle age in most cases. Enjoy

A fairly deep colour, no age; slightly restrained on the palate, and seeming quite youthful, with blackcurrant fruit and a touch of cigar box. Very classical claret which should last for years.

Allow me to praise the virtues of a wine that is fully at the peak of its maturity. Not a big or complex wine but these shortcomings are compensated by the full integration of all its parts: fruit, tannin (very soft) and oak. Smoky liquorice, with undertones of earth and bramble, the nose lifted and darkly perfumed. But a wine to drink now, I think.

A fairly deep garnet/brick colour; mature blackcurrant fruit, with more savoury/meaty flavours and a slightly green tinge at the end. Not especially concentrated, but an attractive and stylish wine for drinking now.

Deep opaque plum colour; with lifted nose of earth, wood and dark fruit; flavours of cassis and blackberry, a little light perhaps, but woven into a good mouthfeel that has longeur. Not a deep or complex wine, but very attractive. A brooding wine with pleasant murky depths. It is probably at its best now (there is just a hint of acidity around its edges suggesting that it may turn it soon). The wine did, however, hold its shape well, even after almost three hours in the decanter, in fact, so well, that I must upgrade my original score of 91 to 92. It might continue to improve, but in my experience wine goes down faster than it comes up.

Similar to previous tasting May ‘18. Slightly more balanced and really ready for business after a short decant. Suspect drinking window will continue. Simply stated, this is what a balanced, well integrated red wine should be. It may not have the complexity and power of some more “prominent” chateau, but I would put it against many high end CA cabs any day.

Typical left bank Bordeaux nose of dark fruit, earth, pencil shavings. Palate shows red plums, rich currant, some creme de cassis and slight suggestion of red berry. Balanced oak. Some forest floor. Still present but Integrated tannins. Medium bodied. Was best after an hour decent. Drinking well with decanting but enough structure to suggest further maturation and a long drinking window.

A really good wine from an underrated vintage. Delicious, soft tannins, plenty of secondary flavours...and on release it was £175 a dozen! The second-to-last last truly affordable vintage in Bordeaux (2008 being the last one). Pichon Baron £320, Lalande £360. Even Palmer was under £500 a dozen. Who can afford those wines now?

Very dark with some sediment from aging. Aromas of meat, cassis, pencil shavings, and melted licorice. Fairly austere on the palate with some ripe-fruit sweetness but a gritty tannic mouthfeel and a tinge of bitterness. A sense of minerality. Could use more time to evolve.

Now definitively in its drinking window, this is wonderfully fine and feminine. There isnt anything flashy here but there is great balance, freshness and a very 'correct' palate. Being Langoa this will last (and improve) for at least another decade. 93

Pop & pour. Gorgeous aromas on opening; I wouldn't decant this. Pure cassis aromas with some tobacco, violets, dried leaves & tar. Textbook St-Julien terroir. Resolved tannins; sweet currant fruit. Perfectly balanced body, alcohol and acidity. A stunning wine and real viticultural and winemaking talent in a year like 2004. Will keep for a decade or more but so enjoyable now there's nothing to gain IMHO.
PnP. Almost purplish. Still youthfull. Much more evolved than last bottle. Vanilla cream with a heavy dose of spice on the nose. Very enticing. A little simple on the palate, elegant rather than extracted. Very good!

Initially this was a bit bretty but thankfully post decanting for 2 hours this dissipated; the nose has good fruit, a strong spice element but is classic St Julien, the palate has good concentration for the vintage, lovely texture and medium weight. The tannins were initially a bit tough but softened by the time bottle was half empty. Drink now and over the next five years to get this at its best.

Compared with the 2009 tonight, this is definitely less fruit. But it makes up for the the lack of fruit by its more regal command of secondary flavour. Leafy, leather and mushroom. Acidity and tannin is much better balance as well.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep ruby color, with thin garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, mineral notes of lead, maturity notes of savory, kernel notes of chocolate, oak notes of cedar. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and satin texture. Medium in alcohol, medium (+) body and medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and dark cherries, kernel notes of chocolate, oak notes of cedar, sweet spice of cloves. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality high-priced St-Julien with a reasonably intense nose of good complexity, the wine has demonstrated the typical communal characters, with a juicy palate, structured yet elegant. Good concentration and having a fairly long length, the wine is ready to drink now, yet still has a lot of potential for ageing, for another 4-6 years.

Typical langoa red fruit, complexity from the oak and tense but not unenjoyably so. Opens a little watery in the mid palate but the last glass of the (half) bottle showed a lot more promise. As always with these wines, you get the sense you are drinking this too soon and it will become what it should be after 15 years rather than ten.

Ooomph. This one is starting to open up a touch and really start to show what the 04 vintage can achieve. Very impressive, deep, meaty, dense, complex but with time starting to show some serious attitude. Lots of vanilla and a touch of residual oak but through that comes spices, black fruit, plums, cherries. Quite primary now and there is not enough evolution to really warrant cracking a bottle if you only have a few in the cellar......but if you have 12 or 24 then maybe cracking one right now will show a wonderful wine at the start of its life. Should be brilliant.

Decanted 2 hrs. (Needs to stand for at least 2 days before.) Ruby/purple and not yet browning. Hints of cedar, vanilla and blackcurrant on the nose; very delicate. Plum stone, damson and blackcurrant on the palate, with high acidity. Tannins remain strong but will balance with the acidity and fruit in 2 years. Length 40 secs and the finish is still in three parts, but will clearly blend into a rounded whole in time. A lovely wine. Wait until 2015.

Cherry, clove, alcohol and rubber on the nose. Raspberry, blackberry, cherry and plum on the palate, with touches of cedar and cassis and clove. Some tannin ripping at the exit. This has gotten less interesting and unique with the years. I am starting to think that 2004 was an exciting year to taste out of bottle upon release rather than with proper aging. With this Langoa Barton, gone is the Medieval crudeness, and the coniferous notes ("like tasting a pine forest," as I once said). Now it is pretty much classic textbook claret, with a quality that a good 6 or 7 Haut Medocs for half the price can provide.

Are these ready to drink yet!?!? (NYC): Mostly tight-grained toasted oak, cedar, spice, vanilla on the nose, but a bit of underripe blackberry, cherry and a touch of cassis showing as well. The palate is medium bodied; what it lacks in depth, it makes up for in its exceptional balance of toasted oak, crushed rock, roasted plum/cherry/cassis, and abundant acidity which carries it all through a moderate finish.
This is excellent and will hang for several years, but I don't anticipate much development. Drink now and over the next five or so years. 89

Wow, I read my impressions of the last bottle I had (Feb'09) and it's a different playing field today. This has really come together. Veggies are gone, coniferous notes have given way to lighter aromatics. Beautiful harmonious purity. Notes of cherry and red fruit. Strong oak presence but well integrated and nicely adds to the complexity of wine. The is becoming a wine of contemplation. 91+.

Ruby-red. Highly aromatic nose of earth (truffle/loam), bing cherry, roses and cassis. Powerful flavor of intense, elegant cherry and cassis, with dark notes of cocoa, earth, coffee, and tobacco/cedar tannins. Very tasty. Perfectly balanced, with just enough acidity to counterpoint the medium body of the wine. Long finish.
Drink 2011-2019.

Decanted 2 hours. Classic nose. Yes, coniferous notes present also hints of chocolate (I guess that makes it chocolate-mint :-). Some floral notes earlier on and at times the slightest bit reedy and green. Beautiful buoyant weight and flow through. Tannins are persistent but softened. Finish is long with nice acid. No doubt will improve with age. I have more and despite enjoying this I will try to wait a couple more before trying again.

Tight and reserved at first but after about an hour in the bottle it really came around and then drank well for several days. Elegant, seamless, and integrated - no toasty oak on this beauty. Beautiful color with dark fruits and cassis. A great buy.

More forward and pleasing than its big brother Leo Barton right now. Slightly reductive nose of dark berry, woodland, and pine needle nose. Palate of red and black berries, licorice, leather, forest floor and pine sap (very strong). Tastes like one is drinking a pine forest--very strong terroir notes. Very chewy, crunchy, granular tannins. Streamline (like many 2004 SJs), low glycerine, low structure, but with alot of depth, concentration and power. Alcohol is already being absorbed by the fruit, which has a nice density. Pleasure to roll this wine in the mouth even at this young age. Long. Up there with the three Leos in this year.

BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): Nice color, nose of strawberry and black currant. It fills out on the palate, with a very thirst quenching quality I like so much in the best 2004s: very cranberry, very delicious. 90-92

⏰
First sip and I immediately knew it was better! Very powerful wine, that stays on darker side of the Force 😎
Black coffee and black tea, black currant, black chocolate ( is it Merlot from the right bank? 😉), tobacco, mocca.
Very grippy tannins, dry, long finish with cinnamon ( nice!).
Smell is incredible complex and rich. Blackberry, black currant, cedar, graphite, milk chocolate, tobacco, plum, vanilla and more sweet aromas.
Delicious, highly drinkable wine for all kinds of drinker profiles.
I would bet 100% that 2004 had more Merlot than 2001, but I would be wrong.
2001- 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot &
5% Cabernet Franc
2004 - 70% cabernet sauvignon
20% merlot, 2% petit verdot, 8% cabernet franc
And be smart here, little man 🙄
2004 was rated the same like 2001 - 88 points according to the WA Vintage Guide.

Cedar, sandstone/limestone, tobacco, leather, graphite, dry river stones, dark, rich, earth, licorice, dark cola, dark spice with heat, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, moist clay, melted caramel & mocha, dark chocolate bar, black pepper with bright, candied, fresh, dark, red, purple & blue florals. the acidity is a gentle, cool to warm rain shower.

Enjoy

Compared with the 2009 tonight, this is definitely less fruit. But it makes up for the the lack of fruit by its more regal command of secondary flavour. Leafy, leather and mushroom. Acidity and tannin is much better balance as well.

Very good. It tastes like barbera at first, with violets, iron, rust, leather. After some areation the tobacco, currant, berries and wood come out, with more sweetness and balance to the finish, which is long and elegant.

Dark ruby red. Nose of black currant, blackberry, forest floor, leather, and mild green pepper. A little restrained on the palate. Tannins still need a little time to soften. Medium finish. While a little laid-back, this is easy to like. Should drink well for at least 10 more years.

Same on the palate; beautiful juicy dark fruit juice, a lot of chocolate, good acidity and round tannin. The wine is in its maturity stage now and will stay there for a while. (2018+)
