1953 Dinner: Milestone Birthday (Gemma Fish + Oyster): Drinking incredibly well. An absolutely great bottle which was a later find than some of the other ones and so glad that we got it. In a perfect spot. Lots of moodiness from the age but still some darker fruits and a lovely balance and again with this age the wine is a bit lighter in style and truly lovely. Special to get to try.

Dark, mature core, slightest discoloration around the rim; from the start a sensational nose, bewildering sweetness, malty, yet red-berried, rosehip, hinting the unique MR chocolate-mint palate that eventually takes you a breath contemplating genious balance, erotic sweetness, plums, discretely present tannin that hold everything together at the right spot, making it a bottled dream; as if it was for a very long period of time after the devastating 56s frost, you'd be ever expecting anything like it; commemorating the 100. anniversary of the Rothschild family's purchase of former chateau Brane-Mouton. 99-100P

1950s Bordeaux from Elke (Bad Neuenahr): Intense, beautiful nose. Cassis, meat juices, dense and creamy in the nose, long and beautiful. As with the 1950 Mouton, it was at its best early on and lost with too much air

The classic Mouton elements are all here, in mature form. Not as precise nor as clean as my prior bottle, but still very good. Benefited from an hour of air time and likely would have been better with even more.

A Night of Old Bordeaux at Latour Restaurant, Crystal Springs Resort, Hamburg, NJ - wow, yet another perfect bottle and I simply loved drinking this. Really dark even black flavors with notes of charcoal, dark minerals and a hint of eucalyptus along with a texture of black silk. So fine and balanced yet with the typical Mouton opulence and the finish is fabulously complex with these incredible dark mineral notes. Another bottle tonight that seems at its perfect peak of drinkability. Simply sublime!

My first experience with this wine. A soft and sensuous nose. Black cherry and pomegranate, dark sweet spice with some black pepper, a smooth smokiness, the faintest vanilla, and then cedar with air time. After an hour of air time a nuttiness along with sweet spice emerge as well. Great wood smoke on the palate with sweet red and black plum, dark earth, light tar, cinnamon, and a long sweet fruit finish. Not the best Mouton I've ever had but I will certainly return to this vintage and hope for a bottle this good. Decanted for almost one hour. This wine was enhanced by the porcelet/sweet corn/summer truffle/poblano pepper dish it was paired with. Delicious but not getting any better and while likely not to fade soon (at least bottles in this condition) this is a 'drink now'

Tasted at a Christie's auction back in the days we had disposable income. : ) A treat since this vintage marked my birth year. Although it's been almost 10 years since swirling and sipping (no spitting) this gem, I recall it as if served last night. A Bordeaux revelation, remembered less for its distinctive aromas and flavors than for how seamless this claret was. In spite of its almost half decade in the bottle, the wine emerged bright and focused with incredibly little bricking around the edges and with a winsome aroma that recalled the high-end suit stores my father used to shop at -- burnished leather, antique woods and the like. Dissecting what my palate detected wouldn't do the experience justice. So I'll leave it at . . . Wow!

Not a virgin anymore - My first dinner at Bern's (Bern's Steakhouse, Tampa, FL): Dinner at Bern’s Nice dark chocolate nose with dried blackberries and roasted coffee beans. Palate showed sweet, but slightly fading dark fruit with toasty coffee and spice. Richness was balanced by still lively acidity. Very good finish of dried black fruits that lasted surprisingly long. A very solid wine at this showing

Second Night in Mecca (Berns): Crimson red color. Killer red fruit spicey nose with hints of green bell pepper. Lovley black fruit with serious graphite notes and just a hint of mint. Very nice. 94+pts.

Wine tasting. Good nose of dried rose petals, forest floor and cedar. Plate shows some remaining pale fruit behind good mushroomy flavors. Elegant silky textures on moderately short finish.

Cloudy pale red. Completely mature with OK fruit flavors hanging on, but more interesting secondary flavors. Probably not a particularly good bottle. 11/03

Fascinating. One of the two or three greatest bouquets I have ever smelled. Too bad it only last 15 minutes. Rose petals, violets, the whole flower garden. No cedar. On the palate, not as sweet as the nose would suggest but silky, incredibly elegant. Ethereal. Gently faded. Some acidity in the finish.

Birthday Dinner (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Disappointed everyone when the half bottle was opened due to its cardboard nose, blew off slowly to a slightly, intense, silky nose of fruit, very flowery taste and sachet-like, long finish. A special Thank you to Jim for bringing the three Bordeaux half bottles, which were paired with great lamb, to my birthday dinner.

The Mouton '53 was quite glorious, with a luscious bouquet (less precise than the '59) very broad with flowers, lots of elegant vanilla and wood, ripe fruit; the colour shows the ripe vintage with a brown edge. The wine is super ripe and and hold together by its enormous power, missing maybe a bit 'fraicheur', but the body is lovely and smooth with very soft tannins, Rubensian!

Would think that the bottle is cork due to poor provenance. Ullage was low shoulder.

Wonderful wine right after opening that quickly lost its most interesting features over time. Vanilla, cassis, liquorice. Nice finish.

My Birthday Party with 53 Petrus, 53 Margaux, 53 Mouton, 78 Three Palms. (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Cardboard on the nose, slightly hot-served room temperature, intense, silky fruit, slightly thin on fruit due to bret(?), great perfume on the long finish.
