My first Butteaux from Raveneau. More used to the Montée de Tonnerre, this came across as a more distant and less playful wine - perhaps with a bit less pedigree and definitely less of a slap in the face. Colour was light straw. Subtle honey and lemon tart. More of an Eric Rohmer and less of a Spielberg. Obviously very good, but that’s a given.

Brought along by Jim Cahill for our dinner at Roberto's. Medium golden color, surprisingly pale for its age...light on its feet and the palate, nutty smell and taste, filigree and well balanced with a firm mineral base. Very pleasant and has kept very well.

Amazingly light, still with greenish glint. Classic floral, oyster shell nose with citrus. Medium weight, fabulous feel. Mix of lemon, apple, broth, vanilla, and a profound soil finish. Properly dry. Great length. Each time I've had this, it has gotten better and better, shedding the early richness of the vintage and becoming more structured and Chablisien. I poured a bit for 2 sommeliers that I knew, and each commented on what a great, atypical 2009 this was. Fantastic bottle.

PNP. Yellow. Light tide pool and lemon on the nose. The palate is medium weight, with a round mouth feel, good lemon infused tart fruit with a lower acid finish. Seems ready to go but also not declining in any way.

Penultimate bottle of 6 originally purchased, last consumed almost 2 yrs prior. Gorgeous 1er Cru Chablis from a top end producer, in a slightly warmer year, so I do get slightly more ripe fruits and a dollop of softness on the otherwise long and incisive finish. Enjoyed with sushi and best friends, drink through 2023+.

Tulip yellow. A bit of the Raveneau honeysuckle admixed with sea breeze and lemon. Rich, round feeling entry with a kiss of oak followed by brisk lemon, orange peel, and salinity. Excellent bolstering acidity and soil. While a bottle 6 months ago was too ripe with fruit that tended to yellow apple rather than citrus, this brilliantly balanced the power and generosity of the vintage with more classic Chablis aromas and structure. An exciting bottle that was a superb foil to an omakase sushi meal. I prefer this to the even richer Montée de Tonnerre in this vintage.

Decanted for one hour but definitely needs more as the last sips (after 3 hours in the decanter) were the best. The color was a clear straw yellow. Lemon and saline on the nose. On the palate this wine had the presence (and medium plus body) that was expected. Lots of lemon and minerality, some apple, and a touch of honey showed, with lively, but balancing acidity. Should hold for several years.

Given 2 hours of air. Medium yellow. At first quite lemony and salty smelling. Relatively generous and round. The fruit is more ripe vintage apple and pear than citrus. The barest whiff of honeyed maturity. Excellent acidity, chalk, and finishing earth. While very good, this was bigger, looser, and less exciting than 3 years ago.

A most enjoyable wine lunch (Eddie V's Prime Seafood McLean Virginia): Creamy depth when enjoyed with the oysters that we had for lunch. Iodine rich, but not as impressive as the 1996 Comtes de Champagne. I enjoyed the apple and stone fruit aspects. It was just a bit short on the finish. Butteaux is southwest of the Chablis town centre and its steep slope with limestone-rich soils is abutted to the east by the Forets climat, the next wine we tried.

Just lovely. Classic notes of salt, iodine, moderate yellow fruits on nose and palate. Mineral as usual. Nice succulent finish. A touch softer on attack and less complex/defined on finish than more classical years like say 2010, but not marred by hot vintage. This will be a beauty for next 4-5 years at least.

Of course, after drinking most of the bottle it really opened up. It’s a lovely Chablis with citrus, including grilled lemon, some orange peal and, of course, great minerality, along with a sea salt finish to it. And the acidity is there, but in balance with the fruit. I wish I had more bottles of this vintage.

Light yellow. Sea breeze and lime aromas. Light weight for Raveneau (read as medium bodied) but layered. Pure green citrus and orange peel, incredibly fresh, mineral driven finish. I was expecting/fearing a rounder styled 2009-uh uh. Absolutely pristine Chablis with another decade of improvement ahead of it. One of the best ‘09 Chablis I’ve had.

I'm loving the 2009 Raveneau wines. Have to respect Raveneau in the less classic vintages. Oodles of savory, salty minerals -- like licking a piece of limestone dipped in citrus and some crushed flowers. Huge mid-palate intensity. I'm not really sure how this will age, but it's so delicious right now that I'm drinking up. As usual, I wish I had decanted this for any hour or two before drinking. Last glass was the best.

Keller Open Afterparty (Weingut Keller): This was my very first Raveneau and love from the first sight. Although I know, that this might be not the most fitting vintage for this kind of style this Butteaux showed lovely light and nearly seamless. Citrus, lime zest and green apple mixed with a mineral/calk component. Wonderful balance, quite a bit of fruit on the palate, very fresh and long. A real beauty. Unfortunately these wines are so unbelievable expensive nowadays.

A Few Days in Paris; 6/10/2014-6/14/2014 (Various Locations, Paris): Pale. Some sulfur, but then classic lemon/sea breeze mix. Light and lean, tart, juicy lemon zest, great acidity. I would never have picked it out as a 2009 for all of its structure. Very young, extremely promising. I bet it will be even better over the next few days.
Yes, impressive development overnight. The sulfur recedes to reveal brighter orange while retaining terrific acidity and soil.

Celebrated Chablis of François Raveneau (MK Restaurant - Chicago IL): Tasting. slightly reductive to start, so this required 10-15 minutes of aeration. Fat and forward orchard fruit started to emerge on both nose and palate. Hold for another few years, but this will most likely peak well before its 2007 counterpart.

HDH Raveneau Tasting (MK Restaurant - Chicago, IL): The 2009 Raveneau's are a bit fleshier, but are drinking so well already. No need to hold these (like the 2005/2007/2008s) as they're already drinking incredibly well. Definitely richer than other vintages, but never gummy, slick, or overly sweet. A perfect, young, Raveneau.

Decanted and poured, this wine begins somewhat subdued on the bouquet and more open and accessible on the palate. The wine does benefit from airing with the wine developing chalk, slate, oyster shell and citrus notes on the bouquet with an underlying sense of richness. The color is a vibrant light yellow. The medium bodied palate shows focus and definition. Acidity is present on the medium length finish. This drinks well now with decanting and may improve with an additional year or two of bottle age.

Burgundy 2012 Day 6: Lunch at Le Millésime (Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy): This was such a delightful wine - clearly many years away from peak, yet already drinking so beautifully. I loved the nose on this, with its gentle notes of saline mineral and seashells, white fruit and green apples, a touch of lemon zest maybe, and then drifting smells of fresh seabreeze with a waft of flowers. Subtly beautiful stuff. I thought the palate was lovely too. It was a bit on the lighter side given Raveneau's style, but I loved the fact that it was really fresh for a 2009, with an elegant unfolding of pure white fruit wrapped in a lovely mouthful of saline, seashelly mineral and a waft of white flowers. This was clear, clean and crisp - a very focused, precise wine, with not a hair out of place. Yet the wine was also so friendly and well-integrated that it went down deceptively easily. I just could not keep from downing my glass. It finished as it started, with beautifully subtle length, sliding away with each gently citrus, floral sip calling out for another. It will be difficult to keep your hands off this once you pop a bottle, but it really does deserve 5-6 years in the cellar to develop some complexity, and will probably keep growing well into its first decade. As always, the Montée de Tonnerre was deeper, more powerful, and I think the better wine in the long-term, but this was definitely the more charming of the pair on the day.

Decanted an poured, this wine benefited from airing. The wine begins somewhat rich and lush on the bouquet and palate. Airing focuses the wine and emphasizes the oyster shell, limestone, lemon and sea salt elements of the bouquet. The color is a light yellow that is appropriate for the wines age. The light (medium) bodied palate also benefit from airing bringing out better balance and relegating the richer elements to the background. The lengthy finish shows enough acidity to keep the wine focused and balanced. The should benefit from additional year or two of bottle age.

Great nose showing more floral notes than others, coupled to lemon essence and wet stones. Rich and deep palate, with more focus and more austere (but deep) flavor profile. Medium + finish, this is going to need a few more years to unwind.

First, I am pretty impressed by Antonio’s take on the 09 Raveneau Vaillons and Butteaux. Based on Antonio’s review, I bought six of the 09 Butteaux and a case each of the Montée de Tonnerre and Vaillons. For me, Antonio's review on these is extremely valuable.
Pop and pour and drank over three days. Mostly white fruits, pear, lemon oil, lanoline, saline and limestone, all what one would expect from a young Raveneau 1er crus. The fruit expression is not as pure as the Vaillons. The palate is oily and unctuous but not much of the counterbalancing bright acidity. Both the nose and the palate seem to lack precision and overall impression is a bit flat. This reminds me a lot of the 06 Corton Charlemagne, ie ripe, fat but dull. If you enjoy the 06 white Burgundy in general, you may favor this a bit more.

A fair whack of sulphur knocks down the nose a little but what is there is quite fine and restrained. It smells of mineral and wisteria blossom. In the mouth it is pure, focussed and quite direct with all sorts of lemony goodness playing on a bed of geological matter. It finishes with relative softness for such a young Raveneau 1er Cru but still has good cut to its chalk laden closure.

Quiet nose; the volume is low and the profile seems to be fairly typical stone fruit, mineral/chalk without a whole lot of distinction otherwise... though the balance is good. A phase?

Shows the softness of the 2009 vintage but marked salinity and schist notes. Good length and higher Chablis tones. Will be very interesting to watch this wine over the next 10 years.

Delicious and pure. Nothing over the top at all. Coating and long on the finish. Always a treat to enjoy a Raveneau.

perfect. Full bodied, pure with an intense core of fruit, great minerality and long on the backend. This is drinking well now and will only get better but tough to wait. The 09 Raveneau premiers are a bargain for this winemaker

So fresh, pure and detailed. Crammed full of citrus fruits and minerals. Great shape in the mouth with an intense fruit sweet heart and real cool underlying stoniness. It finishes with good cut.

Sitter svært lenge i.

On the nose there are notes of sea breeze and elderflower. Your palate is gently bathed with saline tinged lemons, limes, seashells and lots of minerals. The finish goes on and on. Very nice.
