  • 2005 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos du Chêne Vert

This has been my best bottle yet - still 6 more to go! Wow, this wonderful Cabernet Franc has really truly developed in the last few years. Still very dark, almost black centre, which shows it’s still relatively youthful with plenty of life ahead. Nose of ripe blackberries, tar, ancient tobacco, cedar, five spice and, my favourite, old leather armchairs. Fabulous mouthfeel, with just the right amount of tannic grip, soft, rich, fruit powering through to the fore of wild forest black fruits. Hints of sweet, subtle, caramelised cider apples, black treacle, ripe mulberries and loganberries. Long lingering finish with the snap of lip smacking, yet lovely, balancing, acidity. This wine has plenty of life yet but think is not too far off reaching its zenith, in maybe the next 5+ years. One of finest CF’s I’ve had.

  • 2003 Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel

Golden yellow hue, with hint of green at meniscus. Nose of mangoes and vanilla, hints of wild white flowers and the tang of orange peel. Palate medium weight, with a plumpness of texture, giving sensuous mouthfeel. Fresh marmalade, apricots and light honey giving way to greengage fresh acidity, coating the mouth with pleasure and unctuousness. Good finish that satisfies more with tingling playfulness than great length. Lovely example of mature Auslese from the great Donnhoff. Mine was white capsule, not gold and half bottle. Drink up and enjoy before acidity begins to fade.

  • 1973 Arnold Brösch Trockenbeerenauslese

Colour of tea but with a still golden meniscus. Viscous with long, clear, films of glycerin like legs. Nose of fruity tea, coconut sugar, vanilla, fresh cut cigars, rich, old, marmalade and ancient toffee. Lovely mouth feel, full, rich, unctuous, coating every corner of the palate with a multitude of complex flavours including, mint, old honeycomb, caramelised marshmallow, sweet tea, coconut syrup and muscovado. Good balancing acidity still present after 47 years making for a delicious, long, multidimensional, finish. Only the barest wiff of oxidation which blew off within 10 -15 minutes in the glass. Returned to several hours later in evening and even better, greater clarity and focus than at lunch. Remarkable and proof that good bottles of '73 Austrian Ausbruch still have life in them, especially TBAs. Personally, I'd drink up now as I don't think there'd be much to gain in keeping any longer. 50 years would be plenty for a perfectly stored bottle.
