  • 1986 Château La Lagune

In a great place right now. Opened 2 hours before lunch (no decant), served alongside a tarragon roasted chicken and paired beautifully.

Cork was moldy on the top and quite soaked, yet in overall very good condition and quite easy to extract.

The first thing that struck me was the color - Dark brooding purple, slight garnet on the rim, no signs of bricking or tiredness. Very promising.

Nose - lovely floral aromas followed by seductive notes of cigar, leather, dark cherry, anise and mocha. Superb vibrancy and complexity.

In the mouth, very good structure - everything is still there and very much pronounced. Beautiful layers of dark fruit, silky, integrated tannins, medium body, secondary and slight tertiary notes, but really no sign of this being over the hill. Really gorgeous and just singing right now.

92 points on the night, a terrific La Lagune that makes me very excited for the pair of 1989's that I'm opening for dinner next month. Can definitely go for another 5+ years, but at peak right now so no point in waiting.

    Bravo.

  • 1989 Château Climens

    * Opened 5 hours before serving.

A wonderful Climens, paired beautifully at the end of our meal with both dessert (Tart Tatin) and cheese platter (Truffle Camembert, Stilton).

Color - bright gold core, hay on the rim.

Nose - Pronounced floral notes, honeysuckle and herbs, with an initial backdrop of peach and toasted nuts. Developed beautifully in the glass with every whiff, adding notes of pine, lemon and even nutmeg. Stunning complexity and nonstop intrigue and development.

Mouth - Drinking beautifully with harmonious, balanced layers of peach, apricot and sweet pear, and a full, structured body. Finishes long with rich spices and zest, leaving you wanting more.

93 points on the night. A stunner, with decades left of pleasure to give (but no need to wait).

  • 1998 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

    * Decanted 5 hours before serving.

Lovely Gaffeliere from one of my favorite vintages in Saint Emillion.

Color - Garnet core wit noticeable bricking on the the rim.

Nose - Pronounced tertiary notes of tawny port, with more subtle anise, leather, pine and forrest floor in the background. Quite mature, but lovely and seductive.

Mouth - Medium bodied, velvety soft tannins that still support a good core of dark fruit and a complex finish with notes of dark chocolate, herbs, black pepper and sage.

Likely passed its peak, but still showing excellent complexity and lively fruit and structure.

91 points in the night. Drink up now
