1989 Bordeaux Horizontal - London (Piccolino, Exchange Square): A very pleasant Champagne to kick things off, really opens out with some time in the glass. Initially there are hints of ginger and as one of my table mates remarks some breadiness in the baguette spectrum. Some hints of quinine too. Palate has lovely breadth and just the right sweetness / bitterness contrast. With some air a couple of ppm of papaya emerge.

2008 red Burgs (Noize): Creamy and inviting on the nose, which was soft and ethereal with a touch of vanilla. Then on the palate the stereotypical character of a 2008 BdB: lean, citric and precise, very clean and elegant, and slightly saline. An excellent aperitif, though a bit hard-edged at the moment for my palate; likely to be superb in 2-3 years' time.

Pale straw, just starting to round out a little. Lovely nose with some crème pat, brioche, a little gingery spice and a faint biscuity element starting to develop. Fresh and bright attack, creamy mousse and a lovely, balanced profile of fresh, vital fruit, lemon cut, the vintage structure and some richness wrapped in a creaminess. Super balance. This is moving along very nicely indeed and has lost the rasping malic acid edge of five years ago. ****

Starting to show a little development now, but still fairly linear and still about the lemon citrus, should develop more over time but starting to drink well now with food and/or air

Still plenty of cut and acidity which balances the ripe and custard like fruit. Really lovely drinking with many years ahead
