Vieux Telegraphe Vertical (The Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street): The brownest of this flight, in fact very little red, this is very evolved and blind you would have picked this as the oldest. Initially muted on the nose, but air soon changes that - for me it brought out a briney olive nature that was not altogether pleasant. The cork was fine but my view is that this wine was not in good condition and that it should be better than this. I don't think anyone thinks it is outright flawed, and it is not undrinkable, but it deteriorates very rapidly in the glass and with so many other wines on the table it is easy to move on. Alternatively it could just be too old, so if you have left any drink it now.

Vieux Telegraphe Vertical (Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street, London): Looks evolved, some plum and aniseed on the nose, also a hint of nearly empty Bovril jar. Palate is more joined up. One, I suspect, to drink up but in no way falling apart - just in company that was a notch ahead on the night.

Good color, significant fading. The nose is expressive; showing aromas of dried strawberry, garrigue, flowers, nutty oak and a hint of char. This is medium full bodied on the palate with very good concentration and real class. The fairly long finish features integrated tannins.

Bucket Club Dinner (Bronte, Sydney): strong violets and blueberry fruit, hint of orange rind zest. lovely violet and blueberry intensity, distinctly floral, soft enticing structure.
