More power and length than finesse. Rancio-tastic on the nose, with plenty of caramel and furniture polish, then bittersweet on the palate, which evolved within each sip from savoury and Sherried through burned sugar and fruitcake to sweet and creamy on the long, toffee-ish finish.

Birthday Madeira is the best Madeira. It delivers beyond measure. Aromas of burnt sugar, honey, Christmas pudding and golden raisins. Silky texture that just glides off the palate. Sweet, but not over the top thanks to the moderate acidity that freshens things up here. Decadence to drink over decades.

Definitely the best Madeira that I’ve ever tasted. Perfect balance of richness and acidity with a silky texture. Starts with typical burnt sugar and raisins, but then opens into a tart and almost tropical flavor. Perfect balance of sweetness and heat. This is special.

Reluctant, almost brooding brown sugar nose with a backdrop of bourbon. Sweet but not cloyingly so with precision mid-palate acidity and a modest but not very complex or lengthy finish. This was a 2015 bottling. Would like to try this wine from a 2020 and 2025 bottling as I suspect it will deepen with time. At current prices, a relative bargain for a 30 year old wine. B+

Dark walnuts, old wooden bannister, blood orange essence, cognac. That’s all I’ve got. The finish is infinite.
