Fruit has receded on this, with lingering notes of red and blue berries giving way to brilliant Rocks savoriness. Any tannins are fully resolved, leaving this silky smooth and showing finesse. My first experience with a Cayuse with this much age (thanks, Ron!), this did not disappoint.

I wasn’t sure what to expect as most of the Cayuse are so wild and exuberant in their youth, then as the fruit fades the barrel/salinity remains. This was gorgeous, rocks and minerals on the nose, still an extroverted personality with dried fruit like cherry. Quite complex and long.

This was a great wine. This 2005 was ready to drink upon opening and was a bright and earthy Syrah as one would expect from the rocks district. Love the nose on this. The palate features olive, fennel seed, umami, and that terrific salinity to go with the fruit. Great stuff, with a nice mouthfeel and finish. my second Cayuse did not disappoint and was great to share with friends. I gotta get my hands on more Cayuse.

No decanting needed - this was ready to go. What struck me most was the deep concentration. Tannins have faded. Dark fruits, olive brine, slight teriyaki savoriness...all very delicious. I think this is at peak.

Great wine, three hours of decanting and only got better over the evening.
