To celebrate the International Brunello DayTM, I have now open this gem of a 40 year old and iconic bottle from Bondi-Santi and their winery Cantine della Fattoria Il Greppa
This is not a Brunello, but THE Brunello, or the mother of ALL Brunellos. Bondi-Santi was the first to create a Brunello after cloning about 60 different Sangiovese varieties.
Brunello means: brown thick skin in Italian. Bondi-Santi got the certification and has the authentic patent for Brunello from 1863. So, this was the very first Brunello.
As promised, full review follows here.
The winery Tenuta del Il Greppa is located just 2,7 km south east of Montalcino village and situated about 450 MASL.
100% Brunello from the best south-east vineyard just outside the winery and from over 50 years old vines.
The bottle has good fill, to the bottom of the neck, but not into the shoulder. The cork was unusually dry to be a 40 years bottle. I still decided to use the DurandTM opener and it easily came up.
Deep dark ruby red color with clear brownish brick and orange rim.
Elegant and complex bouquet of dried rose petal, sage, dried plum, dark cherries with the tertiary aromas of leather, tar, tobacco that dominates the nose. A clear earthy character with graphite, balsamic and spicy notes.
Tertiary flavor dominates the palate with leather, cigar and tar, but there are quite still some dark fruits of cassis, cherries and raspberries at the palate. The mouthfeel accomplishes a harmonious flavor and well fresh and structured acidity with totally melted tannins. An intense and a masterpiece of a wine and is still remarkable for its age of 40 year.
Still interesting. Nice tertiary nose with stable and wet leather notes. Unfortunately not much fruit left on the palate. Short finish. Bottle was bought at an auction, maybe it wasn’t stored properly.

Pale medium garnet. With air blossoms with dried flowers, pepper, dried wild berries, earth, tar, leather, mushroom. Light on palate, very freshing acidity, lots of minerlaity almost salty, bright dried red cherry and prune, noticeable chewy tannins, some savoury and nutty. Quite focus and layered. Long and vibrant finish! At its best.

Popped and poured. Weak nose, nice subtle palate with lots of fruit at first, but seemed delicate and tired. Declined over 3 hours. Went from 93-94 to maybe 91.

Garnet with very slight brown, orange brick tinge on the rim. Hints of nut meg on the nose followed by wet leaves and hints of leather resting on remnants of black cherry, some licorice, and slight coffee notes followed by cedar earth and minerality. The palate is surprisingly fresh with tangy acidity and spice with slight wood and vanilla on a lengthy finish.. AWESOME
