At a Rhone Ringers blind tasting with the unlucky job of following a perfect California syrah, this stood out for sweet red licorice flavors and simplicity. Notably didn't have any of the pomegranate and spice one hopes for from this grape.

Raspberry liquor with pencil lead, earthy minerals, and a whiff of flowers. Dark ripe fruits, with dusty tannins, a suave mouthfeel, and a long, herbaceous, bitter finish. The pencil lead and herbal notes are unusually elevated for a priorato. Still youthful for a twenty-year-old wine. Very nice for a second picking bottling. This bottle could have gone at least another handful of years, but it appears to be at peak maturity today.

Deep ruby. Restrained nose of thyme, bramble and a bit of soil. I had two. I drank the last bottle in about 2014. It was drinking well then, and it’s drinking well now and probably could go another 5 years at least. Zero fruit on the nose but in the mouth dark berry balances the herbal undertones. Long finish, somewhat bitter and tannic but energetic and pleasant. Northern rhone feel to this one. Some nod to the new world style but what it lacks in balance it makes up for in energy.

This bottle was markedly better than my last about a year ago. This was what I was hoping for to go with a lighter meal. Red fruited and lively from its acidity. There was some subtle earthiness and had a bright finish. Nice!

(MAS DOIX PRIORAT SALANQUES) #2; COLOR-very dark; NOSE-tight, young; TASTE-Wow!! Enormous amounts of black currant, blackberry reduction sauce, underlying hickory, cedar box & leather; 15% alcohol, but NO heat, unbelievable effort, I really like this wine; a little young (palate is a very dry), should age for 5-7 years; JR-91; GV-92

Dark red. Ripe red fruit and tire shop. Ripe berry and licorice flavours and a quite tannic finish.
Modern.
