  • Ripe red fruit remains fairly dense, but with a pronounced amount of oak. Aromatics and color suggest some maturity and finish turns a bit lean. Probably best to consume now - provided you like the wood.

  • This has continued to improve in the bottle. Now it seemed more Bordeaux like with its smoky plum fruit, minerals, gravel and chocolate.

  • For those of you that still have this, you are in for a treat. For $13 on discount and three years aging this is a bargain. Lots of fruit - dark cherry and plum but with a nice complexity and softness that comes with age. Faint brush and herbal hints, fruit still prominent.

Compared this side by side with the 1999 Indian Wells Merlot, which (not surprisingly) was very similar. I would give an edge to the Canoe Ridge. Really pleasant to drink.

  • Dusty black cherry with some licorice, smoke and chocolate. Densely packed but balanced by the fruit. Drink now.

  • Had this with steak last night. The nose isn't impressive - aromas of plums, bacon and chocolate (which became more dominant with air). On the palate there's good fruit, tannins are substantial but not intrusive and again notes of chocolate. I found the mid-palate lacking - the wine has a good attack but leaves a void in your mouth after a couple of seconds. Medium finish. Overall a nice wine that went well with the steak, but is a bit disjointed. Drink over the next couple of years.
