First bottle I bought for cellaring. I was in my internship. I kept it in my closet and transferred it to my ‘rich’ friend's cellar a couple years later.
Cost: $35 at the time, which was affordable.
The cork is short compared to current bottles. It leaked half the length of the cork, not to the surface.
Color is medium garnet.
Aromas were medium at open and fading to light after 1-2 hours.
In the mouth, licorice, blackberry, leather,
Tannins make my taste buds pucker tightly and there is some iron on the long finish.

Charity wine pairings to benefit Whatcom Hospice House. (Samish Hill, Bellingham, WA): This was the best bottle of Pegau I’ve ever opened. There have been a lot, although it’s been a while. Incredibly fresh and clean, especially for this producer. Rich, but not overly so. Intoxicating aromas of dark berries, espresso, and a hint of garrigue and leather. This vintage is likely at its apogee; we caught it at a perfect time. It might be time to open some of the the CdP in the cellar. I’d pass them up in recent years after some jammy and excessively rustic or bretty bottles.

An amazing bottle of this wine. PnP, dark beautiful and powerful all at once. Grenache dominates the nose and palate. Just the right amount of garrigue and tapenade.

PNP from the coravin. Strong tobacco notes on the nose. Fruit is very much alive and well! Strawberries and raspberries. Tanins have resolved to the point where it may be a hint out of balance. That might be nit-picking. This is an awesome wine in a very good place. I’m sad this is my last 98 but it’s definitely time to drink up. Great, great wine and imo an exemplar of what great, aged CdP can be. Pegau is awesome with age. Upgraded after last glass.

(Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée) Dark garnet red; bretty, tart red fruit nose; tasty, rich, tangy, tart cherry and red fruit palate; long finish 93+ pts.
(Domaine de Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape) Closed but phenomenal wine. This nose brought the funk. Barnyard city that developed into beautiful cherry liquor. Incredibly floral and super high-toned. Acacia, roses, even violets after a while. Blueberries and boysenberries showed up too. Kept changing and changing. Massive palate with layers upon layers of dense black cherry, red cherry and sweet, ripe tannins. Long finish. Tannic - - yes . . . but still a monumental wine.
