The first wine my wife-to-be at the time ever gave me. Cellared for nearly 40 years. Did not disappoint. Decanted and drank over 4 hours. Dark color with dark, mature fruit aromas. The fruit might not be what it once was but it really was quite striking for its intensity and richness, which to me justifies the high score.

Why I never drank this before is a mystery to me. Was invited to a tasting with friends, and every one was to bring Cal Cabs of 20-30 years old. Was number 3 of 8 wines, with the 74 Heitz MV and a 77 Sterling Reserve as the top 2. Color was amber in the bowl, orange on the rim and a clear edge. Nose was stewed dark fruit, with forest floor overtones. Great mouth feel, totally integrated, still in balance, long finish of muted fruit followed by some smoked meat. Everyone thought it matched best with the Stilton cheese we had with the wines.

Leaving NYC and moving to San Francisco; 7/16/2005-7/17/2005: Still alive this bottle was purchased on release and never moved from 53 degrees. In the glass its color is a red with a slight bricking rim. The nose has a beefy smell of some tar, chocolate, and game. The fruit is still there and is sweet and amazingly still succulant. The mid palate is slightly hallow though and finish is short and brief.

Stag's Leap Library Wine Tasting (Heritage Gallery - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting, all direct from the winery. Abit step up vs the 1983 just tasted, this is balanced, charming and precise, even in a light, elegant style.
