Heaters (Chicago, IL): I've always had trouble figuring out what the right decanting regimen is for these middle-aged nebbiolos. In this case, we decided to pop and pour, and to vigorously air out the wine in a decanter if necessary (it was). The initial taste was somewhat disappointing, and the fruit showed browner than I would have expected for a wine at this young age. With lots of air though, this wine definitely cleaned itself up nicely; the fruit being a lot cleaner than at first. Certainly the fruit profile is on the red side of the spectrum, but the ripeness of the vintage shows through and obscures the red-fruited acids and the herbal, whole-cluster stemmy notes as well. An excellent bottle, but somewhat handicapped by the vintage. Likely far more interesting with many years of bottle age.

This is really gorgeous now and typical Burlotto, if not typical Barolo. Olive nose with a little smoked meat, very sweet fruit and extraordinarily smooth and elegant. Not as structured as some, and while not showing any more mature notes probably for drinking sooner rather than later.

A little TCA and not performing as it should, aromatically. Otherwise, light color, sweet fruit and no tannins.

Great barolo, really mellowed out. I will drink the rest of mine very soon. Don't leave this for too much longer.
