Jonathan’s 2004 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): This has a lovely, if somewhat stern classic claret nose with dark fruit overlaid by smoky, gravelly mineral notes. A touch of green here too but it adds rather detracts. It’s medium/full bodied on the palate, with cool, minerally dark fruit, still slightly firm tannins, fresh acids, perhaps falling away a touch on the medium/good length slightly drying finish. Overall excellent though and very enjoyable in what might be considered a slightly old-fashioned style.

Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 2 (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Well this was an eye-opener, what a stunner! Lovely dark cassis, sweet peppery notes, ash and cedar wood, absolutely on form this evening. Everything pretty much as you would want it, just a gorgeous claret in the perfect postion. Drink now, this is where you want it to be. It was a tough choice between this and the Montrose but I think for sheer classical enjoyment (as well as a desire to support the massive underdog in this line-up) this was my #1 WOTN by a tiny margin. Splendid.

Jonathan's 2004 Bordeaux Check In (Hawksmoor Guildhall, London, UK): My wine. Allowed to breathe for 40 mins in a decanter before moving back to bottle. Very composed and classical. This punches so far above its weight whatever way you look at it; clean and savoury. Balanced and more-ish. Chapeau
