it was interesting to taste this wine .. I've long been curious about older CdP wines from reading Eric Asimov's descriptions of his love for the lither more aromatic versions that were being made in the 80's and 90's .. while this wine had some delicacy I found it much less complex than I had hoped but such is the gamble

Magnum. The wax capsule kept the cork and fill in great shape. But this was another disappointing wine this night. Lovely strawberries and other bright and ripe red fruits on the nose, but on the palate the wine while silky smooth came across a bit flat. I fear this bottle prior to my purchase at auction might not have been kept at cellar temp for its lifetime. Not a cooked wine by any stretch, but a wine that was showing more advanced age than it should in this format. Still, it paired very well with the Lamb Wellington and Chanterelles.

Still a black liquorice wine, baked but there is some fruit in the background here. Went well with lamb shank cooked with chilli, cumin, and smoked paprika.

Beautiful ruby in color, with a very wide reddish rim. Bricking at the very top.
Light nose with red and black fruits, light cedar and tobacco leaf.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with black plums, currants, cherries, earth, black coffee, oak, herbs, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, dark chocolates and black tea.
Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.
This 26 year old from the great 1998 vintage in Southern Rhone is drinking beautifully now. Soft and smooth, elegant and earthy.
Not so good right out of the bottle, and needed 90 minutes of airtime to open up properly, so be patient.
Robert Parker 95 points. Wine Spectator 94 points.
Will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 years.
Showing nice complexity and good balance.
I paired it with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
14% alcohol by volume.
93 points.
$120 (current vintage).

Brick red. Bright flavours. Cork came out intact.
