  • Knights of Alba (KOA) Candidate Dinner (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): A producer we sometimes forget about and yet I always love the wine when we have it. Very classic and refined and old school in style. Starts off a bit more dark and brooding but as it opens up get more of that tart red fruit. A nice acid and elegant style to it. In a line up with a lot of the ‘big boys’ with much bigger price tags and this really held its own.

  • 2018 Cavallotto visit with Giuseppe Cavallotto (Tenuta Bricco Boschis, Castiglione Falletto): Bottle bought ex-winery and served blind. Opened and decanted three hours before serving, which, ideally, should have been earlier. Softly coloured, browning slightly at the rim. A strong, powerful bouquet of primary, fresh berry fruit, but perfumed showing both rose and violet florals. Also secondary, earthy, dry brushwood, creosote and porcini aromas. “The truffle is pronounced”, said Maciej. The next evening the bouquet had moved more secondary: smoky, more tarry, tobacco with a touch of citrus. On palate, on the first night, the 1997 had massive tannins and was quite austere at its core. It made the robust two 2005 red Burgundies served before it look quite petite. A superb Barolo, drinking comparatively young, even on the second evening. Sour cherries, showing both fresh and dried fruit, earth and iron, with a citric edge. The satiny texture, good acidity and fine grained tannins. Good length. In its drinking window now but no hurry needed.

  • From an OWC purchased at the Roy Welland collection auction. We agreed we were probably making a mistake opening it after dinner, without time for a proper decant and without food, but it was the only red in the house at the proper serving temperature, and we were in the mood. Popped and poured into Riedel vinum burgundy stems. Interestingly, Jonathan and I had totally different impressions of the wine’s evolution. He first perceived it as tight (in keeping with our previous bottles) and unyielding, with prominent tannins and buried fruit. I got more of a fruit bomb at first, with plush ripeness overwhelming the structure. Very odd! The good part, though was that we agreed 100% on where it ended up at about the 1 hour mark – we just disagreed about the trajectory: he thought it opened out, and I thought it took on weight and structure. He was probably right. In any case, we both found an impressive nose of black cherry, with a slightly candied edge to it, underpinned by savory notes, even a little touch of gaminess, with a top note of crushed herbs. The mouthfeel was velvety and round, with very impressive depth and persistence, and an insistent finish. It didn’t have the structure or complexity of a great vintage, but it was extremely enjoyable, especially after an hour of air. This Vigna San Giuseppe is at a terrific place for current drinking, and should hold here for some years to come.

  • Not corked, but a bit maderized, and funky on the palate. Not a wine to serve at a party, but so much to offer, velvety palate feel, fruit totally gone.
Based on this bottle, I’d drink now.

  • Seemed maderized. A little brown. Not sure it was correct.

(Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe) Medium red color with clear meniscus; focused, dried berry and orange nose; tightest of our 3 Barolos, tart black fruit, dried berry, orange and spice palate with complexity and depth; medium-plus finish
